Does 'See In Darkness' have a range limit?

Advice and Rules Questions

I'm playing a Tiefling who has invested two feat slots into Fiend Sight in order to obtain See In Darkness. My GM and I both want it to function however it was intended, but we disagree on what that is. The abilities read as follows:

Paizo wrote:

Darkvision (Ex or Su) A creature with darkvision can see in total darkness, usually to a range of 60 feet. Within this range the creature can see as clearly as a sighted creature could see in an area of bright light. Darkvision is black and white only but otherwise like normal sight.

Format: darkvision 60 ft.; Location: Senses.

Paizo wrote:

See in Darkness (Su) The creature can see perfectly in darkness of any kind, including that created by deeper darkness.

Format: see in darkness; Location: Senses.

My GM is more convinced that the only benefit this grants is allowing my Darkvision to function in supernatural darkness, but that feels unreasonably niche for the price of two feats. He believes the lack of a specified range means that it's tied to the range of my Darkvision. However, See In Darkness is a separate ability that never mentions Darkvision or range limitations at all.

To me, adding in a range limit to See In Darkness is making up rules that were never mentioned.

You're right. Why would See in Darkness be restricted by Darkvision when See in Darkness never references Darkvision anywhere in its entry?

The only thing like a range limit you'd have to deal with is the normal distanced based perception check penalties.

It is not limited by darkvision. Monsters have this dont even normally have darkvision because they dont need it.

Wow, those were some fast responses. I'm gonna have to start using this site more often... also wraithstrike, I see you in almost every rules discussion I've read a lot into, and I don't think I've ever disagreed with you.

Also... is it considered poor manners to request an official word? Understandably, my GM wants to be as certain as possible before he changes his ruling.

It's not poor manners, but don't expect it to get answered without a lot of FAQ requests and even then it'll take months. The official word is that the GM can decide as he/she feels. Others have cited the rules, but Rule 0 and all that. I agree with the other posters on this one. It's not "I can see up to 60' regardless of lighting". That's not the "perfect" it mentions. It doesn't give a range, so you use normal visual ranges, subject to obstructions, Perception skill, fog, or whatnot.

The answer is likely too obviously correct to need an official FAQ to back it up.

The devs dont like you asking them for official request.

If the GM disagrees then my example of monsters that don't have darkvision should count as precedent. Devils and darkfolk are both something he can look at as examples.

edit:citation of dev not wanting to be asked for an official ruling

Should I put "FAQ request" or “Designer response needed” in my post or thread?

No.
Doing so suggests that your post or thread is more “worthy” of staff attention than someone else’s thread which doesn’t include this text.

Finally, most people insisting they need a designer or developer to weigh in with an official answer are in a situation where they’re disagreeing with the GM or another player and one side refuses to budge unless they get an official response from Paizo, and Paizo doesn’t want to encourage that sort of heavy-handedness.

Actually all devils have 60ft darkvision (if nothing as all outsiders do), but darkfolk are still a good example.

Darkvision is generally Ex and still works in an antimagic field, which is a good reason for a creature to have both.
