You will be missed.

Thank you for everything. <:(

I was fortunate enough to meet him at Gen Con '07. He was a warm and humorous old man with the whitest of hair and a magical chair.

From the Troll Lord Games website:

"It is almost too much to get my mind about. But I've just had news that our dear Dungeon Master has passed away. Ernie called this morning, he thought we should let the fans know. He's just sent an email out.

Gary was in his home when he gathered himself up to cross the great divide.

He was a very dear friend of mine. And I will miss him so."

I'm speechless

Where did you learn of this?

I wish I could have thanked him personally for more than just the game.

~bows my head in prayer~ Thank you Gary for bringing in this wonderful game.

I bow my head silently for a moment.

He changed a lot of lives with his gifts.

Holy crap! Are you serious?!
NOOOOooooo! :(
I hope he saw my homage to him in Prisoner of the Castle Perilous. I mean, it was all about his legacy. Damn.

Dark Archive

Wow I mean wow, it's like when a president dies. He'll will be greatly missed....

Scarab Sages

Farewell - may the end of your journey be the start of a new one.

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun.

Tolkien

Good-bye and thanks for all the enjoyment you brought.

Shawn

speechless. sad.

Here's the link to the troll lords thread.

I don't want to call any one "liar," but is there anyone backing up this story? I can't find anything at the Troll Lord Games web site...either the front page or the blog...only the forum posting. ENWorld is not responding (and I don't have the ip address). Just looking for a bit of corroboration before I send flowers and drink the toast.

Speechless.

Very sad. All my sympathy goes to his relatives and friends. We fan are really grateful, I hope they know about that.

Follow the above link from Bray Abbit. It verifies the sad news.

Dark Archive

Speechless.

And forever grateful.

There are very few people who've had a bigger impact on my life than Mr. Gary Gygax - and my life is much brighter as a result of his creations.

As a kid, I spent many hours hanging around the Dungeon Hobby Shop in Lake Geneva, hoping that I might catch a glimpse of him. Fortunately, I finally had a chance to hear him speak at Gen Con many years later.

Tonight, I'll tip a glass in memory of a brilliant man. Thanks for everything.

Oh my God! Tell me this is some terrible joke. It's even up on his Wikipedia page.

NOOOOO!!! ;_;

Truly a sad, sad day for the gaming world.

He will be remembered as someone who gave the world much joy.

Wow, what a bummer!

He will be missed.

I hope this is some kind of hoax, but if it isn't, then may he rest in peace in the big basement in the sky.

There are a couple of Paizo threads about this...

So in an attempt to "keep it together," here is the other thread.

I don't want to believe this. I'd like some verification if possible. If true, I'll join you all for drinks in the World Serpent Inn tonight.

*struck dumb*

*sniffles* ;_;

Via, that's a kick in the teeth.

First Buckley, now Gygax, two of the most influential writers in my life. March is really shaping up to be a poor month.

Dark Archive

Just... speechless.

Sovereign Court

Wow, just wow.

Gary Gygax helped me...
-- expand my vocabulary
-- know that exercising my imagination is OK, if not wonderfully good
-- maintain my humor (remember the 1st Ed AD&D cartoons in the core books?)
-- learn about the world's myths and mysteries
-- many more things that haven't happened yet

On a lighter note, along with the folks who will claim, "Gary would have loved 4E if he had seen it" (ha!) there can also be the folks who lament, "The launch of 4E broke Gary's heart." Sorry, lack of sleep and general cynicism....

Gary Gygax, Rest In Peace.

I can attribute my group of lifelong friends and even meeting my wife to this hobby and back to Gygax. I had the privilege of meeting him years ago, and he struck me as a genuine, good-hearted person. It's a sad day here, indeed.

Damn, I figured the old demigod still had a few more decades in him yet.

I'm sure he'll have a grand time drinking it up in Valhalla, tilling a field in Bytopia, running with the wolves in the Happy Hunting Grounds, meditating in Arcadia, wrestling Titans in Olympus and basking in the light of the Illuminated Heaven.

Cheers to the original Dungeon Master for all the fun he's brought to all of us.

It is the end of an age...thank you...

Liberty's Edge

I flamed with him on his talk list.
I agreed with him on his talk list.
We never knew which was scarier. :)
I met him, but never got to talk in person for long enough.

He was a good man, and I will miss him.

This is terrible news.

The creator of my favorite passtime is gone.

Rest in peace.

There are no words to express my gratitude for what you gave to the world...and me.

I was seriously hoping this was some kind of sick joke. What a black day for gamers.

And here I thought I was the only one who would be thinking that. What a strange group here at Paizo.

/sniff

There is a certain irony (or perhaps, a certain rightness) that he passes on Gamemaster Day.

I'm still speechless (and choked up) about it.

The Exchange

God bless you Mr. Gygax, you changed my life in a fundemental manner.

This is a sad day. All I can say is if it hadn't been for Gary, we wouldn't be here discussing our favourite hobby.

RIP Gary

Same here. Every one of my awesome friendships that I've been fortunate to have has been through the game of D&D. My wife is even a D&D gamer (although I didn't meet her through a game, it certainly helped our relationship!).

Gary Gygax...many, many of us owe you...and I think your legacy is quite safe with us. It's the least we can do.

My wife and I were married two days ago. We met at a D&D-influenced live action RPG and I can't help but think where we'd be if not for that. Thank you Gary, you've touched more lives than you could ever know. For those who have come before us, for those who walk with us, and for those who have yet to come, God speed Gary.

"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal." -Albert Pike

He gave the world a hobby and a way to enjoy oneself. What more could you ask for?

Gary Gygax, Rest In Peace.

Sir Nardi, your phrasing is perhaps the most appropriate I can steal to reflect my sentiments on the matter.

A salute to the Gawfather of Gaming, along with the other fine people who also brought the hobby into being from such humble beginnings in Geneva, WI.

Sovereign Court

Thank you Gary for providing me with this game that I have played for over 20 years.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Dark Archive

This is a sad day. I don't know where I'd be today w/o Gygax. I wish I hadn't been too modest to talk to him at last gencon. Sigh.

Scarab Sages

Ah, Mr. Gygax, you shall missed.

I bow my head in reverence to the happiness you brought and the life you lived.

First Bob Bledsaw, now Gary.

The Age of the Titans ends.

Sad news.

He's one of our Legends now.

May your road go ever on and on, Gary.

Thank you for the wonderful gift you left us all...you will be missed, but not forgotten.

The Dalesman

AD&D was my introduction to RPGs and, by and large, fantasy literature. My life has been made richer through this hobby and I'm indebted to you for your work and imagination over these many years!

Damn.

Gary,

Thank you for turning my love of myth, legend, cultures, and history into something creative instead of passive. You literally gave us the ability to create worlds.

Thank you for your game which spawned an entire industry, which spawned several more, touching the lives of millions (and then some). Without you, the world would have been a much poorer place.

May you find eternal happiness and fulfillment in the hereafter. Farewell.

Thanks for everything Gary.

Save a spot at a table for me in heaven so I can live my dream of playing Castle Greyhawk with you as a DM.

God bless.

Scarab Sages

What sad news on what was turning out to be a good GM day.

I'll have to dig out my AD&D DMG and read through it tonight along with my new books.

His family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
