...that in all the GM-Modules there's nowhere written "D&D". All that's written is:"...for use with the world's most popular fantasy role playing game."
I mean, I don't care, but I wonder none the less why that is so!?
Are you not allowed to use that term (which I can't imagine why), or why don't you say "for use with the D&D 3.5 fantasy role playing game"?
Just wondering...

It's a trademark, and they don't own the license to use it, unless they wanted to accept the D20 branding and the rules that go along with it.

Personally, I think the phrasing is misleading, especially after 4.0 hits (what happens if the world’s most popular role-playing game becomes Cosplay?), so they should just use a made up word, like, “compatible with Baconfish.” I’m being facetious, of course.

The "3.5 OGL Compatible" thing on the back of each one makes it pretty clear which game they are talking about. If they switch to the GSL, I believe they will be able to refer to D&D specifically again.

We are not allowed to put "D&D" anywhere on an OGL product. For the right to do that, we would need to adhere to the far-more-restrictive d20 license, which we will not do for a wide variety of reasons.

You'll also note that inside the modules (and Pathfinder) we use "MM," "PH," and "DMG" instead of the names of the books. That is also because we operate under the OGL and not the d20 license.

And a lot more squicked-out ones. ;)

It's Bacon!

(has sound, this will be a nice change from the KHAN! backdrop at the Paizo office)

I've been thinking of starting a baconfish campaign. If Paizo puts out some baconfish-related material, that would definitely close the deal.

How'd you know about the KHAAAN! backdrop at Paizo? O_o

Stalker!!! @_@

Remember also that it is possible to use these products while playing another game than D&D, such as Castles & Crusades, Iron Heroes, True20, or any other...

okay, I'll ask: what are the substantive differences between the OGL and a d20-licenced product? And what wer the particular restrictions of the latter, that made Paizo decide on the former?

The thing growing in my neck is actually a nascent eye which allows me to see into the lives of others (true story*).

The d20 license requires you to file notification details with WoTC, for one, so if you break the terms of the agreement they can let you know within so many days (30, I think) to correct the issue. They can also require you to torch all of your product if you breach the licensing agreement. In return, you get to use the full names of the core books (including the term core books), gain the ability to use the dice logo, the experience tables, and show how to go about character creation (although I've heard differing opinions on the experience issue - the idea being you can develop experience charts, you just aren’t allowed to tell anyone what to do with them). The d20 license also comes with a decency clause following the Book of Erotic Fantasy, though the clause itself is deliberately ambiguous.

Made you look.

p.s. I hope your father is doing better, sounds like rough times.

I was wondering if anyone had brought this up, and this is all I found. I wish I hadn't because I had to look up cosplay, and really would have rather I had stayed ignorant.

Will the phrase "suitable for use with the world's most popular RPG" be changing? I realize of course that we'll never really know when 4 surpasses 3 in popularity, especially because Wizards are so secretive about their figures. But it will, unless it's a disaster.

If not, what reason do you give: All the versions of D&D are "the world's most popular RPG"? It is still suitable, just it requires a lot of work? You'll worry about when someone proves it's not? Something else?

I dunno about other places - but as far as preorders go, the store I work for has 3 more pathfinder RPG preorders than all three 4E core books combined, and there's still a year before that comes out!

I imagine even in the Pathfinder RPG we'll state something like "compatible with the 3.5 edition of the world's most popular roleplaying game" as well as having some tags on the back of all of our Pathfinder RPG products that show it to be Pathfinder RPG and 3.5 OGL compatible.

We're not quite there yet (we're about a year away from that language decision) but this is how I imagine it'll look.
