Here is a link to the first preview of the new minis set from WotC.

Even though these are technically 4E minis, I'll still consider buying some, depending on what they have. The Ascendant Hellsword seems to be some tiefling character, so for me that's a meh. I like the Fen Hydra though, very Greek myth looking to my mind. As for the Chillborn - its an cold zombie, and undead are always useful. And it looks like they got rid of the undead immunity to sneak attacks.

I was wondering when they were gonna start showing them, I have a feeling alot of things will match the 4e art and that could be a bad or good thing, some of the miniatures have been looking cartoony.

Since I dont plan on converting to 4th edition....

The Hydra is dissapointing on so many levels.
I could have dealt with taking its legs off and making it a serpent....But having be merly lare instead of huge is a horrible mistake.
And I really doubt WotC plans on going back to ever sculpt old monsters from previous editions.

Knowing I wil never own a huge hydra is sad.

The Hellsword guy is great. After all the sets there is naver been a Half-Fiend Template (aka Cambion).

Another zombie is good to.

If you want a huge hydra, buy the Hydra miniatue from reaper and put it on a 3 inch base.

I'm the exact opposite - the hellsword is meh, and I WANT a hydra - it looks great for a young hydra (remember this is a 'fen hydra' not just 'hydra' so the fact that its only large means nothing about regular hydra stats - since there are no huges in this set (thats next set) this is the biggest they could make it

Hmmm. I'm not sure how I feel about these. I usually buy a case each time a miniature set comes out and while I don't use every monster in the set they are close enough to monster I do use to be stand-ins. I probably won't convert to 4E so if all the miniature sets are going to start show casing the new monsters from 4E they will most likely loss my business. If they are close enough to 3.5 monsters then I'mm probably still give them a try.

Scarab Sages

Here is Preview 2 of the new set. Maybe its just me, but I swear I've seen the Cleric of Pelor (or someone who looks a lot like him) in a comic book somewhere.

Despite the author's comment, I don't think that Everfrost Ranger character is really dressed for cold weather. I usually have a coat or something on when it's really cold, but that's just me.

Savage Tide spoiler

Spoiler:
The Hellsword dude screams Vanthus Vanderboren to me. I've had a hell of a time trying to find a decent fig for the ToD version of VV. I may have to seek out that fig.

Im a big miniature fan. Thanks for keeping the trhead alive Aberzombie.

I love this 2nd preview. 3 really great human PCs. Great for any edition.

Hey those look pretty damn nice...

Scarab Sages

I won't decide whether I'll buy into the set until I can see the whole thing. If there are too many minis that look radically different from anything in 3.5E, then I might skip the set and just try and pick up one or two.

The only WotC mini that even resembles a huge hydra is the aspect of Tiamat, and it's pretty expensive.

Here is Preview 3 of Dungeons of Dread. I like the Death Knight.

This time they also give a bit of info on monster templates that can be found in the 4E DMG.

I liked the adventurers portrayed in preview #2. The miniatures in preview #3 were ok, and I disliked the preview in #1.

We need to start watching our backs, AZ!

Scarab Sages

I almost feel bad about posting Preview 4 as it contains two new monsters (new to me anyway) which I assume are part of the 4E game. For my part they are both "meh".

The tenticled monster is in the Monster Manual IV so it is a 3.5 monster albeit an obscure one.

The flaming demon with 4 hands and no arms however is new...and really stupid looking.

Bad preview. :(

"The Human Fighter has an advantage against Bloodied opponents -- the Death Blow ability can be used only against Bloodied targets. When it works, it deals 30 points of damage."

AKA Excecute.

The ranger has a Warcraft warriors "Whirlwind ability and a rogues Reposte ability.

The Cleric has a Warcraft paladins damage shield aura and the druids Leader of the Pack ability....

In Warcraft 2.0 they released Teiflings (Drenai)

In 4.0 they are getting rid of the need to play in person and going online.

I knew it! Its World of Dungeons and Dragons of Warcraft!

I kinda like the far realm thing, and I hope that it is a harbinger of an aboleth mini (since it said in the description that aboleth could communicate with it.)

That being said, I think the undead demon looks silly.

Dark Archive

I agree, the undead demon is ridiculous looking, kind of like the trolls with heads half the size of their bodies. The others up to this point haven't been too bad. I'm not jumping up and down in anticipation of this set, but I might get one booster pack.

I am dead serious, WoTC has said "Damn, Hasbro is pissed we aren’t pulling in as much cash as Hot Wheels! What can we rip off that’s hot and selling right now?" Enter Warcraft. I am certain if I started a thread on "Is 4.0 World of Warcraft?" We would find an alarming amount of rip offs. I understand this is the fantasy genre and there will be similarities but damn. This is a little much.

A few years ago WoTC had said "Damn, Hasbro is pissed we aren’t pulling in as much cash as Barbie! What can we rip off that’s hot and selling right now?" Enter Keith Baker. How about we make a world with Flying ships and technology mixed with fantasy and we can call it Final Fantasy 11, No we will call it Eberron!"

In a few years WoTC will say "Damn, Hasbro is pissed we aren’t pulling in as much cash as Microsoft! What can we rip off that’s hot and selling right now?" Enter Joe Gamekiller. I know, lets put a group of adventuerers on a island, and make them sing for a chance to get off the island, and when they do the other people who lost will try to kill them and the party only has a day to get away! We will call it Lost Survivor Idol 24!" No! We will call it The New Forgotten Realms! Then when ppl try it and realize it sucks we will release Forgotten Realms Classic!

OMG, Im hurting my head. I better quit now before the R&D department finds this thread.

And that Excecute ability in Warcraft is: If a target has 20% or less HP, you can do a finishing move that adds uber damage. Enter 4.0s "Bloodied".

Wow Sterling Edge, I don't play video games so I really don't know much about them. I guess I play chess and spider solitare but they don't count. I also have the Temple of Elemental Evil game but I don't play that either. I have never seen WOW other than in the stores and an add on tv.

I could see the similarities between 4th edition and the video gamey feel it was getting, but I didn't realize you could see it as obvious as your pointing out. Last time I checked WOTC claimed they didn't see it that way at all and that they were unaware of similarities. of coarse I didn't believe them. I think they could tell me that the sun is going to rise in the morning and I wouldn't believe them at this point.

Thanks for the comparisons. If you find more I'd like to hear about it.

Dark Archive

Yeah, this is very disturbing. I would like to find out more as well.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I thought WOW was just a computer game. Is it also a pen and paper role playing game as well? If it isn't what are the minitures for then?

Blizzard has recently put out a set of WoW minis. You should be able to find them on the Blizzard site. They're kind of kool looking actually. Better than the hand-i-pillar undemon thing...

I guess WOW decided that if WotC wanted to cut in on their market, that they could try to return the favor. Strange times.

Imagine if the two companies got together....what then...besides lost of miniatures?

This is a good site for spoilers:

http://www.ddmspoilers.com/ddr_stats2-0.php

The Eye of Flame Beholder looks pretty stupid. For some reason it makes me think of Kang and Kodos from The Simpsons. :) I don't like the new-style Green Dragon and the Immolith is, er, a not terribly convincing piece. I quite like the Fen Hydra.

I didn't like the 3E interpretations of several classic monsters like the manticore, basilisk or medusa, so maybe 4E versions will be more to my liking.

However, I suspect that lots of 4E creatures will be so radically different looking that they will be useless to me. For this reason my days of buying lots of booster packs are over.

WoW, EverQuest, and EQ2 all have OGL/D20 versions in print, more or less.

OMG! You made Diet Mountain Dew come out of my nose!

On topic: I've been seriously underwhelmed by the previews they've given us so far. Now I know why they're calling it Dungeons of Dread.

Actually... Sword & Sorcery made a d20 Warcraft game, based on the Warcraft real time strategy computer game that WoW is based on, and then they updated it to be based on WoW.

Today's Howling Hag looks okay, but the Angel doesn't do much for me. I'm not so sure that I'm even going to bother with this expansion. So far I've seen a couple that I like, but I've seen more that seem to be a waste of money.

Maybe Against the Giants will be better.

Scarab Sages

Sorry I was late with this. I got an early start today and didn't have time until now.

Here is Preview 5 for the next set.

My opinion: The hag is OK. The angel sucks ass.

You mean the angel that looks like a bandit at a costume party with cardboard wings and swords?

I like the Dire Wolf. The Bulette looks a little off to me.

They both look like they would be more at home on the DnD Cartoon than on the field of battle to me.

Sadly I think they're gonna loose my business on these. I used to buy a case each time a new set came out. Now there are so few figures that seem worthwhile I'm probably not going to bother. Why do a bullette anyways, they already have one.

Chris P wrote:

I'm thinking of going the same way. These 4E minis just don't seem worth it.

Scarab Sages

Here is Preview 7 of the new set. I do kind of like the new Ettin, but I wonder what they need with another Gargoyle.

It IS a nice gargoyle. Is that moss on him or Gleemax puke?

<A guy's gotta work to take a jab at Wizards these days, eh?>

The gargoyle and ettin are both decent figures. The old gargoyle in the Dragoneye set stunk!

Scarab Sages

Surprise, surprise! In searching through more of the WotC site this morning, I found more Dungeon of Dread mini pictures in the "Previews for..." section. They included a wide shot of the entire set. Just scroll right down.

I must say, I do like the Oni. The magic robot....not so much. Although he does kind of look like Dr. Doom....
