Kaijitsu Manor

Rise of the Runelords

Since the death of the elder kaijitsu , the kaijitsu manor is empty
Does the AP intend to do something with this or would it be ok if Ameiko give rooms on it to the adventurers ?

What about Lady Kaijutsu in general? Will she be important in other modules than BO? Could it that she has ties to the Pathfinder organization?

Well, it wont be empty, because the Kaijitsu most probably had a couple servants/guards. I like to think Ameiko is quite intelligent and knows she will be under quite a lot of presure as the new head of the Kaijitsu family.

She will probably have to deal with the other noble houses, and especialy the Scarnetti, who will see her as unfit/unworthy of being one of the big 4 of Sandpoint (and the other noble families might want to take control of the Glasswork as well). So, even if she doesn't like to live as a noble, she will probably try to look like a noble for some time, until she can make sure that her family's name is safe and the Glasswork is rebuilt.

As for giving PCs rooms in her manor, given what I just wrote above, I don't see that as fitting since it could bring even more criticism from Scarnetti/other nobles. But she could easily give them free rooms and meals at the Rusty Dragon (which has the side effect of also boosting her customer base of locals willing to hear tales and share a bear with the new heroes, so she's doubly happy).

As a side note on the glasswork, she probably is the only one left in Sandpoint that has any idea of the family glassworking process, so she will have hard work there. She has to recruit new employees and train them, try to achieve work as worthy as her father's, deal with customers who are waiting for their contracts to be fulfiled, contact supliers, and even decifer the paperwork of her father (he might have been using some code-names and hidden meaning, to avoid industrial spying).

If the player characters develop strong ties with Ameiko, the villain of The Skinsaw Murders may direct attention toward the mansion...

Unfortunately, the morning's steady rain has delayed your arrival at the Kaijitsu manse. The mansion's many glass windows gleam brightly, beacons of hope in the gloomy morning, but the leaden sky promises worse weather to come.

The manse's ornately-carven front door comes into view. As the breeze gusts, it swings back and forth, unlatched. A bloody smear can be made out on the foyer floor.

If Ameiko forges an alliance/friendships with the PCs, then having her give them rooms in her manor is a cool idea. There's not much more on the schedule in Rise of the Runelords for the Kaijitsus, but eventually there'll be another Adventure Path in Pathfinder that is pretty much all about Ameiko, and explores the real reasons her family had to flee their homeland.

It makes sense that Ameiko would be extra nice to the PCs if they save her life under the glassworks. Rooms in the Inn or the mansion make sense. Some characters might like one or the other, depending on their background.

I don't think the other nobles in town would have an issue with the PCs living in the mansion if the PCs were assumed to be employees or retainers of the Kaijitsu clan. It's perfectly common for retainers (with level) to bunk in the boss's house (where else would you want your bodyguards to live). However, if Ameiko tried to "adopt" them as honorary members, that might piss some people off.

For Ameiko, associating with the PCs is a very shrewd move. With the death of her father and the carnage at the Glassworks, she would clearly recognize that she's in a vulnerable position. If the PCs are a good match in alignment / temperment, it makes sense for her to try and recruit them to her side.

The PCs would be able to provide protection on both a tactical basis and a strategic basis. If the PCs are often around her or easily called to her aid, then any attempt to attack Ameiko directly becomes much more difficult. The CR goes way up.

Strategically, anyone who wants to mess with Ameiko would have to think twice once the PCs become involved. By the time the dust settles after Thistletop, the PCs are high enough level to present a serious challenge to anything any of the factions in Sandpoint would be able to throw at them. Even if they were to find a way to "get rid of" Ameiko when the PCs were distracted, they have to assume that the PCs would likely figure out who was responsible and exact some revenge.

Very valid point, and one I should have thought of after saying the manor wasn't empty because servants/guards would still work and live there.

And I think I will have Ameiko offer them to stay at her manor at some point, even though I'm 100% sure their characters will want to stay at the Rusty Dragon. [Evil DM grin] After all, my PCs have done a very stupid thing at the Kaijitsu manor when investigating about the plot, and some guard might definitely recognize at least one of them (Halflings covered in tatoos of Varisian origin are not that common, after all...) I was searching for some ways to have them pay for their decision, so here is one ;p

Thanks for all the replies .
* I assumed that Ameiko would not move to the manor after the death of her father but would be staying at the inn.
* I don't think the manor has happy recollections for her since her history and using it at an annex to the rusty dragon for the pcs would be in character for her
* I'm pretty sure she doesn't give a damn about the 'aristocracy of sandpoint tradition' given her mentality so giving a place to stay to the pcs who have saved her life is certainly ok for her

The reaction of the scarnetti will indeed be interesting especially given the dark times that will be coming to Sandpoint
* The glassworks are not a wealth source for the near future
* A good part of the farms have been destroyed
Economically , Sandpoint is in for rough times
