Burnt Offerings- Rate of Advancement

Rise of the Runelords

So, I'll be running RotR using True20, which uses ad-hoc leveling by the narrator instead of XP. I was wondering if any kind soul could recommend good leveling up points, so as not to outstrip or stay behind the typical D&D advancement.

In True20, I can adjust the difficulty of the encounters through assigning Conviction to players and NPCs, so what is more important to me is to keep a rate of advancement similar to D&D.

this is a good start there was another thread where someone worked out the actual XP for the encounters so had the leveling points....but seem JJ's post in the above

Thanx for that Link, that's exactly what I was hoping to find.

So roughly, I'm thinking of the following:

Finish the Glassworks---> Level 2

Right before starting Thistletop*---> Level 3

En of Thistletop---Level 4

* Probably throw in a tracking encounter while travelling to Thistletop, following the Warhorse and running into a goblin hunting party.

Agreed. After they finished the Glass Works, they got 2nd level (and actually had them level at the table). Right after the first part of Thistletop, they advanced (or right before they crossed the bridge). So if you want to advance in town: 2nd after Glassworks, 3rd after Wrath...

If they do the Catacombs of Wrath before Thistletop, and defeat Malfeshnkor in Thistletop, they will be within spitting distance of 5th level after finishing that dungeon. With the full Catacombs experience behind them, they'll hit 3rd level within a small handful of encounters at Thistletop, and have a good chance of hopping into 4th by the encounter with Nualia.

My PCs are 50% into level 5, but that's due to a fluke. Basically, I only had 2 PCs up through the end of the Catacombs of Wrath (and Erylium's ignoble end), so they actually ended up right at level 4 at that point. Then, I had 2 more PCs join for Thistletop. I didn't want to start them below the level of the established PCs, so they got a free ride to level 4, and thus inflated the experience available in the first module.

Fortunately, they're only actually ~3000 xp ahead of where they would have been if it had been a 4 person group from the start.

I have tentative plans on starting my own version of this using True20 and starting everyone off at 3rd Level to start (Warrior 1/Expert 1/Adept 1) and then leveling them at two places regardless of whether they explore the catacombs or not. First I'll level them after the Glassworks in Burnt Offerings, if they explore the Catacombs, I'll throw in some nice toys but no leveling. Then after they finish Thistletop I'll level them again. I'm looking at this sort of like a video game. They have two sub bosses before the big boss and the optional demon fight which was supposed to be a minion of the main boss. In Skinsaw Murders they will level after beating the Skinsaw Man and then the Lamia at the end. I realize this may make their character levels a little higher than expected but I can always adjust the encounters myself.
