As a point-of-reference, I made a roll to see how Vesh might react so close to the Shrine: Vesh v. Shrine (1d20-4=0).
I am planning on using this to have Vesh try to get in there unless you want to move things along. Though, if someone makes the perception check against Vesh's bluff, they'll probably just sit on him and tie him up. I'll follow your lead for the sake of game-pace.

"Hey chatterbox!" Slidell calls from down below.
Boy, there's the pot calling the kettle black! ;)

"You coming down to help me with these runes or what?!?"

FFW

On the way back, as they pass the 'study', Slidell murmurs, "Just a sec,..." And dashes back into the study, pulling a large bag from his backpack. He and Veran hold a hastily whispered conversation, then slowly review the bookshelf. After a few brief moments, Slidell carefully but swiftly selects half a dozen books, and places them in the bag.

Rejoining the others, he says, "I'm afraid to take too many, in case they begin to deteriorate outside of the preservation field." He carefully handles the bag into a more comfortable position. "But I think I can preserve a small number. And these should keep me occupied for quite awhile."

JSL~ With the books all looking alike, and no other means to determine which ones to take, Sli took the 6 books closest to the empty space on the shelf where the one already claimed was. Hoping that they will be later in the volume's history.

FFW

Slidell watches as Salome prepares her items for the task ahead.

"If I may?" He looks at the others. "Perhaps we could tie ropes to those who enter, and those who stay outside could pull them out if they look like they are about to succumb to the power of the statue? It may not work due to the amount of moving around required to set up the ritual, but it is an idea."

HE looks at the others, and clears his throat again. "How long will it take to set up and perform the ceremony Salome? Will it save time if others help you? I ask because, well, I'm no paragon of virtue, and I haven't made an extended study of religious ceremonies, but I am familiar with ceremonies in general, and the mental coercion from that statue is powerful,..." He looks around, Then grins. "Not to put too fine a point on it, but my willpower is fairly formidable. If you need help with the ceremony, I offer my assistance."

Don't know how much help he'd actually be with no 'Knowledge: Religion' skill points, but with a little luck of the dice he may be one of the ones to resist the longest.

"Bazé," Salome whispers to Vesh, "are you all right?" Space for response.

She nudges Malcolm. "Perhaps you could offer to restrain him?" she nods her head toward Vesh. "Just long enough to keep him safe while we work."

Salome ignores the overeager mage's questions and offers to help. From a distance, they seem to be doing a strange dance as she turns her back on him and he keeps moving in front of her to get her attention. Finally, she faces him. "Look," she says, focusing her penetrating amber eyes on his face, "if you want to be useful, let me concentrate on my job so I can get this right the first time. "Unless we're willing to disarm everyone so they can't cut the ropes, I don't know that that's going to buy us anything," Zieke replies, "It's going to take our strongest to go in there and topple that thing, so anyone trying to haul us back out will likely face quite a challenge." He nods at Vesh. "Even moreso if you're having to keep an eye on him...which you should definitely be doing in my opinion."

Zieke then proceeds to unstrap his shield so he can have both hands free, leaving it just outside the shrine. He steps up next to Salome (and Ehlissa?) with a grim expression. "I'm with you," he confirms, "I don't know that I've put much faith in Sarenrae over the years, but the gods know I could use some redemption." He meets Salome's eyes. "If anything, I've got faith in you. Let's get this done."

Initial Strength check... (1d20+3 = 22)

Shall we continue making more checks at this point? And if so, what's the applicable skills to use? Strength checks for Zieke and Ehlissa? And Knowledge (religion) checks for Salome and Ehlissa? If so...

Additional Strength checks... (1d20+3 = 8, 1d20+3 = 14, 1d20+3 = 23, 1d20+3 = 10, 1d20+3 = 7)

I'm not sure what the DC is for toppling the statue. Presumably, Ehlissa could use Aid Another as an action to boost the result, assuming she can enter the room okay. Let me know how many follow up Will saves to make for failures.

All: Roll initiative.

Salome, Zieke, and Vesh can take a standard action in the surprise round. Vesh is running towards the shrine room; his initiative roll is (1d20+6=25). Beat it to attack him in the surprise round before he bolts. Lose and you've got to use the surprise round to run after him.

Ehlissa rolls initiative and can act in the surprise round as above if she makes that pesky DC 22 Perception check from before.

Mal, and Slidell cannot act in the surprise round.

JSL, you said to go for it! Feel free to take over the "encounter" or grab some popcorn and enjoy the show. If you do the latter, please interject in the spots where I make glaring mistakes.

Hey, this is fun.

OK, you can use the saves you made before for when you chase Vesh into the shrine room. That result is valid for one minute - or long enough to resolve this.

Vesh:

Spoiler:

Your primary objective is to drink the Milk. You can use your surprise round action to get to the milk. Drinking it is a swift action on the next round. Once you drink some milk, you gain +4 Str and +4 Con and the ability to make two claw attacks per round that do 1d6+Str damage.

You probably need to deal with Vesh first before attempting the skill challenge. But if you want to do otherwise, let me know.

Mal enters the room at full-tilt (double move to get into the room).

Zieke is up, and I have a feeling this is going to hurt. Slidell and Ehlissa also have to hustle (double move) to get into the room.

Unless you've got a feat/special ability/previous dispensation from the real DM that I'm not remembering, Protection from Evil is cast as a standard action. Feel free to make a "do over" for Salome if you don't want to cast PfE.

Tell you what, if you can convince JSL to allow True Strike to be cast as a swift action, I'll let Salome cast PfE as a swift action! I'm a negotiator--I mean, if Vesh can drink Milk of Lamastu (Milk of Magnesia?) as a swift action, we may have a case!

Vesh wrote:

[ooc]It is from a magic item, which can cast it as a swift action. The item costs more to account for it.

With his heavier armor and the fleet-footed rogue, Zieke quickly recognizes he isn't going to reach Vesh in time to stop him from interacting with the shrine. As a result, he resolves himself to tangling once more with the boy. But at the same time, he decides to hold back his strikes and pull some of his punches to ensure he incapacitates Vesh rather than do any permanent damage.

Vesh wrote:

'Ah, hell...that can't be good,' Zieke complains inwardly.

Vesh wrote:

Zieke easily sees the first attack coming and slides past Vesh's animal-like swing. His eyes widen as the clawed hand passes his face in slow-motion and Zieke registers that the Milk of Lamashtu has already worked some hideous transformation.

That split second of hesitation costs the big warrior as Vesh's second blow connects. Zieke rolls with the attack, however, letting the momentum carry him around in a complete spin. Once he comes back around, Zieke whips a vicious uppercut starting from belt-high and straight up into Vesh's chin.

Unarmed strike... (1d20+4 = 23 to hit)
Non-lethal damage... (1d6+3 = 9 hp)

Zieke can feel the jolt of impact course all the way down his arm...a near-perfect execution of the maneuver he learned from the scrolls of Tian Xia. But even as Vesh recoils from the assault, Zieke knows the battle isn't over. He's fighting something much more sinister than the rash, young archer. There's an evil goddess at work against him and he realizes he needs to stay on his toes or this could end very badly.

"Salome! Get in here!" he urges.

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

Slidell watches Vesh dive to his hands and knees as his own hands pick their way through his scrolls.

Veran screeches, "Boss! He's,... !"

"I see it V!" The mage interrupts solemnly, his eyes never leaving Vesh as he selects two scrolls from his pockets. He watches Vesh's attacks intently as he sees Zieke counter and Salome activate a magic item and head into the room.

Zieke wrote:
"Salome! Get in here!" he urges.

"I got him." Slidell says calmly and firmly as he steps up to, but not past, the archway into the chamber. The mage swiftly tears the ribbon from the scroll in his left hand, and uses his right hand and scroll to unroll it. He mutters a brief phrase, too low to be heard, as his eyes swiftly scan the page. He then looks back up and says, "Vesh, MAER!" the last word echoing with the power of mystically enforced command.

Vesh is the target of a SLEEP spell. Affects up to 4HD of creatures, closest to spell's target affected first. Will save negates completely. Vesh, please roll a WILL save vs DC14. (I hope this works!) :D

I'm going to wait to post until after Slidell's Sleep spell is resolved.

Male Human (Varisian) Spellthief 4 (XP = 6405) as of 7/28, Wrathspawn and Shrine (10,000xp = 5th level)

This is a good reminder of how much more clear I need to be if I ever DM for reals. This is what I intended to have happen:

First, from where the party was in the hall outside the shrine (and since we don't have a map), I imagined that all characters would need to double-move (or "hustle") to get into the room--essentially two move actions or one standard action.

Second, those characters who got to act in the surprise round (by making the perception check and seeing that Vesh was acting fishy) were pretty much able to get into the shrine room using their one standard action for that round. Thus, Vesh, Zieke, and Salome all busted tail during the surprise round. Everyone else (including Sli) needs to double move on round one just to get into the shrine room--that's why Mal's description is just running into the room.

In any case (unless there are circumstances I'm forgetting a la Salome), Sleep takes one round to cast, so here it is for Sli: surprise round=no action; round 1=getting into the room; round 2=start casting Sleep; round 3=Sleep takes effect at the beginning of Sli's turn, so Vesh, Mal, and Zieke act on round 3 and the Sleep hits and then Sli take his round three action(s). This by itself may make a case for 4E.

Slidell: you may retcon your actions now that you've got all the information, otherwise I'll assume you move on round one and start casting Sleep as your full-round action on round two.

Salome: you've casted PfE and have moved into the room during the surprise round. You can take your normal menu of actions during round one.

Everyone: sorry for the confusion.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

What the hell?! Eesh, well there was no way Ehlissa could make either of those checks.... Er... what is going on?

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

Sant- Sorry, your right, I did not notice the 1 round casting time for SLEEP. (It is one of those horrid nerfs they made for 3.5 I missed!) However, It has a medium range, (110' off of a 1st lvl scroll) so I should not have to enter the shrine room to target Vesh with it. Unless the shrine room is larger than I remember! Even if he double-moved Vesh should still be in range I think.

Unless otherwise re-corrected, Slidell's actions are:
surprise round=no action, 1st round= 5' step to archway and begin casting SLEEP, it should go off right before my turn on round 2. (Just like when I summon a creature)

I think that's got it? Did I miss anything?

EHLISSA- Nothing much, Vesh just went all 'Milk of Lamashtuu Addict' on us, now we have to stop him before he turns into something like that mutant-goblin-on-steroids we fought earlier! ;)

Um, yes, actually. When cast on a group, sleep first targets the nearest valid target, then the second nearest, and so on until its 4HD capacity is exhausted. So you will have to move to ensure that Vesh is nearest and that you don't get Zieke or Salome. Why no other spell works this way is beyond me.

I think Vesh's stated order of operations is correct and should be followed.

Does that mean it's Salome's turn in round 1?

I believe that's correct. Your initial attack has to avoid Vesh's attack of opportunity. As long as you get past that, your grapple only has to succeed on a touch attack, so it goes against Vesh's AC without his armor in play. Then, it's an opposed grapple check for you to prevent Vesh from breaking off with you. All that happens in this round's worth of activity between you two. And, as long as you're coming at him from behind or at an angle, you should receive a flanking bonus. I believe Zieke should be able to keep Vesh's attention pretty squarely for the moment to affect that.

Sli's save vs. the Statue: (1d20+5=15)

In the interest of NOT slowing things down anymore than I have, (I know i know, 'Stoopid casters!') I have moved the SLEEP spell discussion to the Discussion Thread. For now I am following Sant's layout of Sli's actions as above. Sli got a 15 for his save.

I think we are waiting for Vesh, right?

He needs to AoO Salome and resolve the grapple if necessary, then take his own action in round 2.

You may need to retcon a bit. Since Vesh missed his AoO to prevent Salome's touch attack from starting a grapple, he has to make an immediate opposed grapple check to shrug her off before he can make any further attacks against anyone. If he fails that check, they're both considered to be grappling and their ACs and attacks will suffer for it.

This is what I get for opening this can of worms. Sorry for the hasty post, here goes the corrections...

Vesh's grapple check (1d20+3=16).

Vesh slips under Salome's grasp.

Ehlissa's R1 action goes here, can I assume that she double moves to close with Vesh? Let's say, for the sake of resolving this, that she now flanks Mal, and that Zieke and Salome flank one another. Vesh is surrounded!

Round 2:

Vesh's round 2 actions remain the same: missed attack on Zieke; hits Salome for 8 hp.

Mal's will save (1d20+1=21)

Mal closes and attempts to sweep Vesh's legs out from underneath him...

Mal vs. Vesh (Touch AC); STR check (1d20+4=23, 1d20+1=13)

Vesh doesn't get another AoO "this round," I'm saying that he doesn't get one until Salome's init. count in R2. Vesh's opposed STR check (1d20+3=21).

...but his attempt fails. Their feet momentarily entangled, Vesh attempts to return the favor but cannot.

Zieke is up, then Slidell.

To paraphrase some old John Wayne line, "Don't make us hafta kill ya, Vesh." :)

You've no idea...I'm sitting here wondering if the Invisible Castle gods are laughing at me. Vesh gets the good rolls now of all times.

"Alright, that's it!" Zieke snarls as he sees Vesh claw into Salome again, "It's about time you learned a lesson the hard way, you weak-willed bastard!" Striking from behind, Zieke slips one arm over Vesh's right shoulder and another around his opposite side and up under Vesh's left arm, grasping both hands then tightening his grip into a reverse choke hold.

Melee touch attack to start a grapple with +2 flanking bonus... (1d20+4+2 = 24 to hit)
Opposed grapple check with +2 flanking bonus... (1d20+8+2 = 19)
Non-lethal damage, if successful... (1d6+3 = 8 hp)

"Let's see how much fight you've got left without any air..." Zieke grunts, squeezing tighter and tighter in an effort to wind down Vesh's flailing.

Vesh makes an involuntary gurgling sound in response to Zieke that is cut short as the warrior's arm cuts off his windpipe.

Vesh's Grapple Check (1d20+5=11).

That's 17 points subdual dmg. to Vesh for those of you who're counting--almost there!

Slidell's up.

So Vesh needs to save vs. Sleep. - JSL

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

Brought down from the above post,...

Finishing a chant whose syllables seem to slide off the ears before they can be fully realized, Slidell then looks back up from the scroll and says, "Vesh, MAER!" the last word echoing with the power of mystically enforced command.

Vesh is the target of a SLEEP spell. Affects up to 4HD of creatures, closest to spell's target affected first. Will save negates completely. Vesh, please roll a WILL save vs DC14. (I hope this works!) :D

Male Human (Varisian) Spellthief 4 (XP = 6405) as of 7/28, Wrathspawn and Shrine (10,000xp = 5th level)

Vesh's WILL (1d20=5). Phew.

Male Half-Elf Fighter 1 / Monk 1

Zieke feels Vesh's body go limp and struggles to maintain his hold while keeping the boy upright in case he's feigning.

"Is he out?" he asks, unable to see Vesh's eyes and unwilling to let go. Once someone (Slidell? Salome?) confirms the threat is ended, only then does Zieke relax his chokehold. Even so, he continues to hold Vesh upright.

"We need to get him out of here," Zieke says, "Permanently. Mal? Think you can give me hand? Let's take him back to the portal while Salome, Ehlissa, and Sli purify this place so it can't do any more harm."

Zieke might be able to aid you guys with his high STR in toppling the statue, but he'll be a liability from a Will save perspective if he comes back. Ehlissa is likely just as strong...and I assume she's decent at Will saves? It makes more sense for the paladin and cleric to deal with this room anyway. And Sli for his arcane assistance, if necessary. In the meantime, it's probably better if we get Vesh far, far away from here...

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

Slidell watches Vesh slump in Zieke's arms, and smiles.

"Say 'Goodnight Gracie'!" He quips as he rolls up his now-empty scroll.

"Salome! Let Ehlissa or Malcolm check to make sure he's not faking! I'm pretty sure he can't steal Deity-granted powers, but let's not take a chance!" Slidell calls out suddenly, before the cleric can begin to check Vesh's injuries.

After someone has verified Vesh's nappy-time,... ;)

Taking a breath, Slidell steps briskly into the room used above posted save to save time! Hope that's ok! and begins speaking calmly but rapidly. "No argument with you on this one Zieke. Let's at least get him out of the room and bound. Tightly. Malcolm, can you take care of that while Zieke helps us topple this statue? If we can get a rope over the top I'll pull on that for leverage. As soon as the statue's over, Zieke, you should probably leave as well. I'll stay to help set up the ritual. If one of us shows signs of being mesmerized again, you may be needed for a retrieval. Salome, didn't you say you had something that could boost a person's resistance to outside influences? You might want to give that to Zieke in case he needs to re-enter this chamber. Now, What's the best way to topple this thing? I have the feeling that it's not going to sit around and just wait for us to get started,..."

He finishes in a flurry of syllables, brow furrowed in concentration, looking for the best way to bring the statue down without looking directly at it.

In order to defeat the shrine, you need to topple the statue and consecrate the room. Anyone who enters the room needs to make a Will save immediately. Actually doing the work in the room will play out like a skill challenge. Every failure indicates wasted time and requires characters in the room to make a Will save to resist the statue. So if you have success, it means you work quickly enough that you get the job done before succumbing to the statue. For reference, the Will save is DC 13 and the Fort save (if required) is DC 15. You need 6 successful skill checks before 4 failures to win. Fail that (i.e., get 4 failures before 6 successes) means you have wasted enough time that the statue begins to get stronger.

The primary skills for the challenge are Religion and Strength. Of course Perception and Intelligence might come in handy, too.

If you remain in the room, you need to make a Will save at the end of combat.

Salome's Religion check result:
Giving it some thought, you realize that the malign aura emanates primarily from the statue and not from the Milk itself. The purification ritual will be easier and the lure of the Milk less potent if the statue is toppled first.

Count as 1 success.

Ehlissa shrugs off the malign influence of the statue but try as she might, it fails to budge.

"I'll carry Vesh out with Mal to bind him and keep an eye on him," Zieke replies, "Then come back to help you folks if you still need me. If Salome has something that'll help block any influence Lamashtu's power has here, then she can meet me at the door and make sure I'm protected then. In the meantime, hurry and get this job done before Vesh wakes up and makes another go of it."

Zieke leaves the chamber, lugging the upper half of Vesh's limp body while Mal holds his legs. Once they get outside the shrine, he places the rogue on the floor and aids Mal in binding him with the same length of rope he used last time.

I'm glad things ended this way--I like that Sli took him out with the sleep spell instead of a repeated pummeling. I do need one thing clarified for my own education. Sli casts sleep from a scroll, right? Does that effect the casting time? I thought sleep is a one rounder, meaning it wouldn't have taken effect until the beginning of Sli turn on R3. Again, I'm happy to let this go--I want this episode to be over, and I am happily returning the reigns where they belong (thanks for letting me test-drive, everyone). I just want to know if I'm missing something--like Salome's quickened PfE spell.

Also, JSL, could you let me know when and how Vesh wakes up, and how much he remembers? Oh, and the long-lasting effects of the milk, if any. Thanks.
