Whew!

I hope I covered everything in a way that can be agreed to. I tried not to be too specific, because, as Zieke and Vesh point out, conditions will vary depending on where the encounter takes place and what obstacles are presented along with the quasit.

I'll let you guys hammer out the details of trapping and trickery. There's probably a little more information floating around that we could use.

Good job, Dreamer.

Let's Vesh and Salome go to Father Z. and Slidell go to the sage for more info. on the three questions above.

I Hate Quasits wrote:

Sounds good. Maybe after kids go to bed.

While we're splitting up to gather info, is there anyone else we need to see? Hannah? Mayor? Citizens secretly worshipping the cult of Lamashtu?

I could go chat with the SAGE, but the last time I saw him it wasn't that exciting. He seems to be focused on conspiracy theories (which Slidell likes!) And theories regarding the 'Old Light' and other local landmarks. Perhaps now with specific questions about Alzanist, her 'primary' rival, or any stories about Alzanist's little outpost, maybe he has something else,...

OR, having seen the number of Artifacts on display in the lobby at the school, perhaps I should go and have a little chat with the town's resident MAGE. He's obviously been around, and might have relevant information about the same questions. With out the attending paranoia/obsessiveness.

Otherwise, Maybe I should spend an hour or so spending 1 craft point and scribing 2 more scrolls. Though to be honest, I seriously doubt that the battle will last long enough, one way or another, for Sli to cast ALL of his available spells!

I agree with the IC thread in that we should keep it simple. The more complicated the lie or bait, the easier it is to see through. IN fact, SLidell just had the idea of finding a blond wig and putting it on something, so there won't even be a magical tell-tale to detect!

Sli is also willing (if not actually EAGER) to be the bait. I actually have a couple of (hopefully funny) lines I was planning on having him say as soon as we went back in. So If we plan on Slidell being the one who attracts the Quasit and tries to tick it off enough to make it attack, (and let's face it, it seems to me that he is VERY good at ticking people off and making them want to attack him!) I'm ok with that. Especially if he has close support. (IE=Bodyguards!) ;)

I think Vesh is ready to go. Aside from finishing the little scene with Salome on the way to Cathedral (and I have nothing more to add to that), I've done pretty much all the RPing I had in mind. And, if Salome has no further questions for Father Z., Vesh is ready to meet-up at the Rusty Dragon and then return to the tunnels.

Let's go get the Quasit! I hate 'em.

Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, I can probably post tonight after the kids go down. I won't post tomorrow, and very little--if any--on Monday. I'm on the road Tuesday and Wednesday, which means posting from hotel rooms and/or airports, so my posts won't happen until the evening on those days. Thursday returns me to normal. Just FYI.

Ehlissa is ready to lay the smack-down. She was born ready. You can't get readier than her. Darn ready.

Dark Archive

Nicely written, Dreamer. Bravo. That was a great back-and-forth between the two characters--it allowed me to get to know both of them better. Thanks.

Just FYI,
I had to go to the hospital and get an infection taken care of.
I don't feel so good, so I'll probably post slow to NO the next day or so.
(Stoopid meds kick my @$$ worse than the infection!)

Without having caught up in the IC thread, Sli is down with any plan we agree on. Including using him as bait! Between spells and scrolls I can cast all but one spell in my spellbook. (The Transposition) And lets face it, even if I cast one spell every round starting the surprise round, Most battles don't last that long! ;)

Hopefully I'll see you all soon with full wind in my sails, (and chatter from Sli's mouth!)

Laters,

I like how it turned out, too. Somewhere in Paizoland there should be an awards ceremony for stuff like this. :)

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

Great interaction between Salome and Vesh; again, it is an honor and a privilege to play with a group of talented writers and players.

And I think Benign Transposition could be damn useful. I always loved that spell. Baleful Transposition can be a lot of fun too, especially when you're DMing (the look on their face is priceless).

I was just thinking the same thing! This whole thing is so much stinkin' fun. Thanks to all of you.

And ditto to Dreamer on the Paizoland post-of-the-month award. We'd be a shoe-in for sure! *Basking in the glow of the lights...* "I'd like to thank my agent, and all the people at Miramax...and the fans, it was all for you."

Ahem.

To Rags: WTF? An infection? I hope you feel better, man. At least now you can do the whole 'method actor' thing with Sli! Get well.

Loving the way everybody gets into their characters! And enjoying every minute of it! Like being on stage with a good performer, Your writing helps bring out the best in me and my performance!

Once I feel better, (and I decide which way SLI decides to go with his reactions) I'm going not for Post-of-the-month, but Ham-of-the-week! :D

Heh, there's very little 'method' to MY acting! Just wind me up and turn me loose!

About the infection, For those who REALLY want to know,... (Nothing gross, some people just don't want to know.)
Spoiler:

Five years ago I survived a serious Staff infection (MRSA)(Yes, survived, it tried to kill me!), took me a year to kick it, and another year to get my strength back. (I must have had, like, -10 to my save vs colds & germs!) One of it's cousins is trying to move in.

Nothing a boatload of antibiotics won't cure! (Eventually!)
Thanks for the well-wish, I always accept those! :)

Keep up the good work everybody! See you in the IC! ;D

Ok, still a little fuzzy on where (if anywhere, as Dreamer pointed out, it takes a while in real time to decide how to deal with something), Slidell personality may take a change, but for now,...

The Mage is back!

Sorry so long winded, but despite my needing time to recover, I have a busy schedule at work this week, (Dance Review & Ms Black LA), so this will probably be the only 'book' I write for a few days!

(Really now, there's no need to cheer! Sheesh!) ;)

To make sure We're all up to date and legal,
-I wanted to spend 1 craft point and the remaining time left after visiting Quint to scribe 2 scrolls of Benign Transposition. I have the feat so it is pretty cheap, and I only need them at Caster lvl 1.
-I wanted to find, buy, borrow, or beg a blond wig, and pin it to a gourd fruit. This is for making the Quasit angry, (Like we need to try!)
-I need to borrow a vial of CLW. With my HP, It's pretty much a necessity!
-I will carry a small bag of flour in a pocket, enough to cover at least a 5' area if flung.

I think that's all, at least all I remember.

Just let me know when to get the things attention. Do we just want to head for the Runewell room, knowing that she will be trying to reactivate it or something, or explore like before, looking for her and hope we trap her in a smaller room?

See you in the IC!

Why blonde? Is there a detail I missed?

Dreamer wrote:

I thought that was the description that we got about Nualia, blond hair?

Or am I just so RL obsessed with blondes that I put that there myself?

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

I hope the infection passes quickly, Rags.
Slidell can have one of my CLW's. Rent for the dagger.
I think that the blonde wig was discussed because Nualia was blonde, but I'm not sure.
I'm a little fuzzy on something; Slidell offered to cast Mage Armor on everyone and I have a potion of Mage Armor but "...providing a +4 armor bonus to AC.". It seems like it wouldn't stack (bonuses of the same type don't stack). Am I right (that it wouldn't stack) or am I being somehow daft? What am I forgetting?

@Rags --
I hope you get feeling better soon. Never fun to be sick, and the last one sounds like it was serious. Speaking of which, I'm sure Salome would tell you to quit posting and get some sleep! :)

Slidell Stormraven wrote:
"SO, shall we go see what Queenie has scrambled up to meet us? And do you want I should announce our presence as soon as we enter, or wait until we're in a certain room?"

"Our chief weapons are fear, surprise..." and pineapples! Kidding!

Stealth is of the essence, for our verbose and clanking crowd. I'd like it if we can detect the quasit and soon as possible, and she discovers we're there as late as possible. But maybe that's just me.

I'm also trying to work out the clue given by Father Zantus:

Father Zantus wrote:
"Vesh, remember one thing when you face the 'quasit'. It is immortal, but it is not free. True it does not eat or drink or age. However, it cannot grow or change or even enjoy its existence. It is a creature of pure hatred and jealousy imprisoned in a frail vessel and driven to the pursuit of that which it cannot ever obtain. Find what it desires and use that against it. Let its own hate and envy be the key to its downfall."

To paraphrase Freud, "What do quasits want?"

• freedom?
• a full life?
• happiness?
• power?
• growth?
• ????

And how do we use that against her?

*Yawn!* I'll post something tomorrow.

Dreamer wrote:

That's how I feel. I'm all caught up on the game thread, but I'll post tomorrow.

Dreamer wrote:

Sleep? Sleep. Hm, yes, I have heard of this 'Sleep' of which you speak. But I'm pretty sure it only exists in fairy tales. ;P

The wig, -I thought that we were told that Nualia was a blond, and if we decide to try and anger the quasit, I wanted a blond wig so it wouldn't be able to see through a simple cantrip (Minor Image) and blow it.

The Imp- What does it want? (Without getting into over-psychoanalyzing mythical creatures,) It wants what all other 'living' creatures want, but it is trapped inside a shell that will never allow it to 'grow', either emotionally or physically. Though it can learn new things, allowing it to gain levels in Wiz or Cleric.
To paraphrase a quote from Harry Dresden, "A creature like this never grows, never changes, it simply is what it is. If it wants to eat your face, it will want to eat your face whether it sees you again tomorrow, or a hundred years from now."

I think we can assume that it wants 'power', as all of it's kind usually do. I am running off of the presumption that since it called Alzanist it's 'former master' that it worked for her (Either willingly or unwillingly) either as a familiar or simply by a magically binding contract, (Tales are full of stories of foolish wizzies making contracts with greater or lesser powers for simple favors or promises of greater power).
Either way, the Imp no longer is bound to Alzanist, but ended up (trapped?) in this outpost, and found a NEW master, (Lamashtu? Another Runelord?) And either she or her new master have cooked up new schemes (sure to be nothing but trouble) and she is using Nualia to fulfill part of them.

Also note that she didn't cry "MY Runewell" when it went dark, she cried "The MASTER'S Runewell". So she's still taking orders from somebody. I intend to have Slidell push THAT button verbally when he gets a chance. :)

So, to keep it simple, Imp wants what? =Power, and to accomplish it's 'master's' goals (whatever they may be) Which at this point seem to be freeing thew Spawn of Lamashtu from where they are currently imprisoned. So, we tick off Imp-y by telling her that the plan has failed, Nualia has been turned to good, captured or killed (killed would seem to be easiest, and most believable to an evil creature).

Edit-got sidetracked at work in the middle of the above, and lost my train of thought! Any other ideas? ;P

Father Zanthus said "Let it's own Hate and Envy be the key to it's downfall." That seems like a pretty clear clue to me, what am I missing here? What does it both Hate and Envy us for having that it can never attain? :(

Maybe the quasit "hates" the fact that it's always passed over in terms of power and recognition? These would be things that it envies as well. It is, after all, a minor demon on the power scale. Seemingly, it had a "master" at one time (or still?) so it doesn't get to call its own shots. In addition, even this "daughter" seems to have found favor in the eyes of Lamashtu enough to be entrusted with freeing this Yethmazari spawn thing-a-majig...while the quasit has still been left behind.

So, is it really free? Is it really getting all of the attention and recognition it craves? Based on all of those situations, I'd think not. So, appealing to its vanity...either by making it overconfident through fawning...or by making it angry and rash through taunting it...would seem a good strategy to me.

My two-cents,
--Neil

Hm, once again your 2 cp turns out to be more like 2 GP!

I had a thought once of attracting it's attention by offering it a chance to be my familiar.
NOW I'm wondering, would offering to study and serve IT be better?!?

Think about it, this thing is the permanent 6th grader in a Sr High world! Major picked on, dismissed, ignored or worse. It was raving about how we destroyed it's servants (whom it controlled), and about how she had been sent a daughter, which leads me to believe that she feels 'in control' of her daughter, (as a parent should with a child!) Maybe it WANTS to be in charge! Of something, anything! (Or more likely, anyone!)

Would be a dangerous bluff, as it would require that Sli take the thing on alone in order for the ruse to work.

Thoughts?

(Oh no! Don't do it Slidell! It's too dangerous!)

Anybody?,... Stop the crazy mage,... Hello?,...

Ehlissa's blond - the goblins said that she looked a bit like Nualia.

FabesMinis wrote:

It's not a big deal. It just struck me that among the races of Varisia, blond hair is very rare. I also recall that Nualia's eyes were purple? But I can't find a reference for that detail, either, and I'm not willing to admit how much time I've wasted this morning looking for it.

Now that we're in past the Alzanist door:
Let's retrace our steps toward the well-chamber, but see if we can lure the quasit to the smaller anteroom. Cover the top of the ladder with a net. If possible (we never got a diagram of the room), I think Vesh and Malcolm should hide outside the archway (as the wrathspawn hid inside the archway last time) to catch/strike the quasit as she leaves the large room to get the Slidell-bait. Zieke, Salome, and Ehlissa cover. If that doesn't work, we can enter the larger chamber and fight as planned.

I know it's a little late to be asking this, but would it be possible for Slidell to cast an illusion covering the archway so the quasit doesn't immediately detect our presence? (Actually, I'm thinking like the Bugs Bunny draw-a-tunnel-on-a-rock trick--it looks like the room is normal, but we're all in their making preparation to catch the thing.)

Which begs the obvious questions:
1. What are the spawn of Lamashtu?
2. Where, specifically, are they imprisoned?
3. Who was Alzanist's rival?

Well, 1 out of 3 ain't bad!? :) About Sli's average, actually. ;P

Actually, I think that we're more like 2 out of 3. Or, 2.5.

1. The "Spawn of Lamashtu" are the Yeth. I believe that if we ever run across Nualia, we'll run across the Yeth.

"The lone success among Lamashu's myriad failed progeny are the Yeth, dog-like demons of great strength and cunning. They are often found in the company of her faithful. It is said that Lamashtu's bestowal of a Yeth to a mortal priest is both a blessing and a reminder; a reminder that should her servant fail her or show even the slightest hint of weakness, the Yeth, hungry and treacherous to the last, will turn on him: rending his flesh, devouring his entrails, and returning to its mistress with his still-beating heart clutched in its jaws."

2. Where they are imprisoned:

"She has gone forth to free the spawn of Yethazmari - a champion to our cause - from imprisonment in the realm of my former Master's rival. Oh, don't be sad, precious one. There is enough yet here for you!"

Seems to me that there are two possibilities here.

One: the demon's former master is Alzanist (Wrath), which means that the rival was Karzoug (Greed). In this case, the realm where the spawn of Yethazmari are imprisoned would be Karzoug's realm, Shalast.

Two: the reverse is true and the demon's former master is Karzoug (Greed) and the former rival is Alzanist (Wrath), in which case the realm where the Spawn of Yethazmari are imprisoned is Alzanist's realm, Bakrakhan. This would mean that Nualia is much closer, possibly right under our noses!

The thing that we have to figure out is this: would Lamashtu, described as "a champion to our cause," be allied with Karzoug or Alzanist? A bit of a toss-up, really.

3. The Rival = as Rags points out, this has been answered.

Gotta run.

Yes, she has purple eyes, which Slidell said indicated celestial heritage.

Or maybe Lamashtu isn't allied with either one? Someone noted that the Runelords didn't sound like the type to worship a god, viewing themselvs almost as gods.

I think that this plan has merit (I'm biased). Whatever falsehood Slidell uses is likely to work better when seen from the other end of the hall in semi-darkness. Once the quasit is lured into the hall, we'll have limited its options for movement some, making it easier for Mal to snare the thing while Zieke and Vesh take care of the Wrathspawn while Ehlissa and Salome cover the mage. That leaves Slidell (and Salome and Ehlissa) to hit the demon until we can all converge on it. If Mal comes out to help with the wrathspawn, that also means we've kept our original groupings.

The trick will be getting into position quietly.

Arctaris wrote:

Remember, though, the demon described itself as "favored" of Lamashtu, Lamashtu gave it Nualia as its servant. It also described Lamashtu as a "champion of our cuase." Seems that there is a connection to Alzanist or Karzoug somewhere. I'm not completely convinced that the demon was Alzanist's, however. I suppose that Wrath fits Lamashtu's portfolio better than greed, however.

Quasit wrote:

The spawn of Y... is the champion. our is somewhat ambiguous, but presumably means the quasit and its "daughter". It may mean Lamashtu as well, but does not say "champion to her cause" or "... my cause".

Also, remember, you are right on the border of Alzanist's and Karzoug's domains, possibly very close.

Furthermore, you are obviously in an Alzanist enclave and the quasit did refer to the runewell (also an Alzanist artifact) as "Master's", which pretty strongly implies which side she was/is on.

The Alzanist/Lamashtu relationship is ambiguous. Don't get too hung up on it. There is a broad secondary Lamashtu thread running through the campaign. It is true that the runelords (including Alzanist and Karzoug) did not prostrate to any god. But their followers certainly may have, although this is not thoroughly explored in the module. And, just like in our world, religious associations likely spanned political boundaries.

I've given a few clues as to what sort of <ahem> beastial <ahem> creature would worship Lamashtu. Suffice it to say, her followers are far from common in human lands. But you will encounter them in this story.

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

Yeah I really think Lamashtu is nobody's champion. Rather someone is the champion of the cause of Lamashtu and (by extension) the quasit. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter.

The champion - Nualia, someone else? Who knows?

All I know is, there's an extra-planar being with a vulnerability to fine sentiment and cold iron.

And I'm right out of fine sentiment

Right on Fabes!
I give you one of my favorite quotes from Harry Dresden, (Chicago city, you'll find him in the phone book under 'Wizard') right after he kicks open a door with NO preamble,...

"And I'm ALL out of bubble gum!"
:D

Hehe,... you'll all kill me, but at work today I had ANOTHER thought, and it something that Sli would think of on-the-spot, especially if it looked as if our plan was going to Heck, Ready?,...

Slidell pretends he only came back down to turn you all over to the Imp, as payment and proof of his loyalty, so he can learn the magical secrets of the ancient Runelords!

I'm thinking, IF he survived the initial assault of his outraged teammates, (BIG if there!) that would probably be something the Imp would believe. Especially if I threw spells at you like the cold orb (which has a to hit, so I could make it miss) or my acid blobs, which can either miss, or do little dmg if they hit!

BUT, this has not been something we have discussed earlier, so it would be a 'spur-of-the-moment' thing for Sli, which could get him killed by you! (Though I have already thought of a way to signal one person who I think would get the message.)

I don't think it will come to that, but if push comes to shove,.... :)

Re: quasits, traps, lies, and motivations:

Keep it simple.

And for the quasit, get it talking.

Contributor, RPG Superstar 2009, RPG Superstar Judgernaut

Here's one dilemma that I think everyone's kind of missed...or put on the back burner. I don't imagine we're just going to draw out the quasit first. She's going to send her wrathspawn again. Remember, she still has one to command. And those things don't seem the type to be fooled, bluffed, or engaged in diplomacy. Once that thing sets upon us, we're going to have to defend ourselves and cut it down. At which point, a lot of the tomfoolery in conversing with the quasit it going to fall by the wayside. The battle will be on in earnest at that point and we aren't going to be able to say, "Ignore the twitching of the dying wrathspawn down the hall, we're just here to converse with you..."

So again, about the only "trick" I think we can pull over on this quasit is if we pretend we've got something that she'd be interested in stealing for her own...or to keep out of our hands before it can do irreparable damage to "their cause." I think that ruse can still be carried out regardless of whether we encounter the wrathspawn or the invisible quasit first.

Other than that, I agree with most everything that's been said so far about the clues. The quasit is/was clearly a pawn of Alzanist's faction. She's sent her "daughter" (which can only be Nualia) into the realm of her master's rival...which must be Karzoug's former lands. And she's attempting to set free some kind of champion to the cause of Lamashtu...presumably something oriented towards the Yeth, I suppose.

That's all I can string together at the moment.

--Neil

P.S. Oh...and Rags? Not a wise Plan B if Sli pretends to turn on the party without discussing such a strategy first. Zieke is liable to believe it straight up. And heaven help you if he gets close enough to punish him for his "duplicity." ;-D

Yep, Ergo the 'Big IF' above!

Also agree with Dreamer & all, I love cool, complicated plot twists, (mostly because I can't usually figure them out by myself), but in this case, 'Keep It Simple Stupid' is good advice. IF I (or anyone) starts doing something drastically strange, I'm sure that the resulting response from certain party members would be,... painful, to say the least. ;P

Not to let the cat out of the bag, but I'll apologize in advance for Vesh's impending misbehavior. Oh, and just to be clear, NSpicer, this will NOT be Vesh's version of Slidell's "Plan B." Though the visual description that accompanies what is about to happen should make that clear.

EDIT (continuing my thought from the game thread...): I would prefer, JSL, that Vesh be yours to control until this 'situation' is resolved. If we do it that way, we can cut out the middle-man (you telling me what to roll, me rolling, you describing). I find this preferable on a player-to-player basis as well. There is much to blame Pendleton for, but I'm afraid this isn't one of them. Cottage Grove? Really? Let's talk about Hermiston (where my hotel is). Perhaps I should describe the scene out my window. *Looks out window.* Or, perhaps I shouldn't. You'd all have to make a Fortitude Save.

So let me offer my deepest sympathies for having to be there.

Whenever I feel similarly, I remember the alternative. Unemployment. See? Now, I'm happy to be here. It works like a charm every time. Also, I am one of those weird people who comes out to Eastern Oregon and quiet like the scenery. I like the high desert. It would be much nicer without the Pendletons and Hermistons breaking the landscape, granted. But I like the hills and wide-open spaces. I imagine the Velashu Uplands (Vesh's stomping grounds) to be similar in nature, but I think Paizo has something more verdant in mind.

As do I. Alas.

Today is my long day at work so I'm not expecting to post until dinnertime/bedtime tonight. I'll say something IC a little later, but Salome's spoiler is basically that it's not just an enchantment, it's the shrine itself growing more evil as the MofL accumulates. It will eventually need to be destroyed and purified, but I think that our first priorities are deal with Vesh and dispatch the quasit. (Aside from some hallucinating, the shrine isn't going to jump up and attack the group.)

Are you sure? Have you seen the old SINBAD movies?!? ;)

In the IC thread, I'm picturing Slidell and Zieke almost face to face. Sli looking at the at the statue with Veran trying to get his attention, and Zieke looking past Slidell, eyes widening,... :)

I've made what I believe to be a very important discovery. "Hermiston" must be the Native American word for "Hard Water."

Nice segues into Vesh impending doom, BTW.

I'll say! Ha!

Good luck, and I'll see you from the Portland Airport tonight...hopefully there'll be a coffee place open for me to post from...and look ultra-yuppie-pretentious with my laptop! D&D? Ha! L&L! (Laptops and Lattes!)

Safe travels Sant! See you then.

I need a coffee today, but I should REALLY cut out the caffeine, and then, what's the point really?!? ;P

Slow posting day, eh?

Actually, JSL is swamped with work he had to bring home and we have company arriving tonight, so he most likely won't be able to post anything until tomorrow evening. So, to get things rolling again...

Santinj@ - feel free to post. Here are JSL's instructions:

Vesh attacks one of the unaffected group members, chosen randomly (i.e., Zieke, Salome, or Slidell).
The target is flat-footed. Sneak attack applies.
The "transformation" is mostly in his head, but feel free to elaborate other details. For example, if it hits, the bloodiness of the wound, etc. If it misses, the rabid ferocity of the attack, shocked looks, feral appearance, etc.

I wonder about that "mostly," but I don't have any more details. But hopefully we'll at least have something to react to.

<singing> "AN-TIC-I-PA-A-A-TION!"</singing>

Sorry, but I hadda post SOMETHING! And the anticipation is KILLIN' me! (Possibly literally,....)

:D

Okay. I'll give it a try. As listed above, Zieke will be 1-2, Salome will be 3-4, and Slidell will 5-6. So, Vesh attacks...

You didn't think I was going to post the result here, did you?

Looks like Zieke finally gets to try out all those monk feats. Improved Grapple and Improved Unarmed Strike might come in handy this time.

Yep. I think that was our surprise round, we were flat-footed.

I believe that we now roll init and go for it? In order I mean?
(Says the guy who caused the last big brou-ha-ha all by himself by posting WAY too early!)
:D

I'm at intermission in my show right now, will post Slidell later tonight after I strike.
(I have to strike the stage, roll up all the dance Marley floor, ah the joys of being a tech for a living!)
