I know even less about mages than I do about clerics. So, aside from relatively low HP (which, I take it is a class feature along with not being allowed to wear physical armor), is there something else about the wizard class that makes them more susceptible to poison/injury? Or less likely to heal w/o assistance?

Ragadolf wrote:
So, no need to RP a week long recuperation. ;P

No, but the resident medic will likely send Slidell to bed for the rest of the day. Unless, of course, Corporal Marsk has other plans for his favorite out-of-towner.

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

It's just that they have very few hit points compared to other classes. They don't heal any slower. But they have poor Fort saves, making them more likely to suffer poison damage.

Yep, that about sums it up!
IN short,
Mages=get hit easier, don't take hits well

We suffer for our 'Art' (which is used for 'magic' in some fantasy settings) at low levels, so that at medium to high levels, we can take out an entire horde of orcs with 2 or 3 well placed spells.
:D

Show-offs. ;p

OK, so bean-counting.

Ehlissa sold the glass for 3500 - so 7 of us = 500 each. She already had 10gp = total 510 gp. She buys goods to the value of 310gp. Thus leaving 200gp. Sells fancy clothes for 60gp. 260 gp. Seems right to me.

She'll be after some of those CLW potions!

When Slidell stops carrying his crossbow, be afraid, be VERY afraid! ;D

Vesh wrote:

I think you've got it right. Vesh seems to be a very popular guy today. As I recall, Father Zantos said the ceremony would be in the evening, so there's time for both errands.

I try not to post twice consecutively, but there's more to respond to ooc than ic. :)

My plan is to 'let' him rest for say half a day. That way I can get him up by afternoon, he has time to chat in character with the others, join them for dinner that night, (over dinner I'm sure we'll end up discussing solved and unsolved mysteries,) discuss things like what they saw at the bazaar, and make his shopping plans!

I just assumed he'd sneak out once the door was closed and enough time had passed to be sure his attendants had left! :P

Timelines will definitely catch up by this evening (in game time and out, hopefully). Ehlissa will catch up to the rest at the glassworks in time to collect Vesh and head back to the cathedral. The sword enchanting will be done in time for the group to meet for dinner and hash out their plans.

It sounds like tomorrow will be market day for at least 3 of you, which can all be handled separately, even if you are there as a group.

Hopefully anything else that people want to do will come out of the dinner/planning session.

My intent is not to belabor the RP of the down period, but give people a chance to get on the same page and equip their characters.

As a newbie, I'm going to throw this out for some feedback:

If you were running Salome as a character, what would you look for at the market (besides the obvious CLW potions, that I hope some of you are stocking up on, too)?

I left my character sheet mostly blank re: equipment, mostly because beyond not understanding the economy yet, I don't really know what's out there -- let alone what I can make up or invent to be out there. I can't promise I'll take every suggestion, but I welcome any and all ideas.

P.S. Congrats to Vesh for submitting the 1000th post. Balloons and confetti should fall out of your ceiling or something. :)

Well group, as Dreamer pointed out, we've passed 1000 posts.

A long time ago, I was introduced to AD&D by a friend and played my favorite character, a Human Ranger that got as far as 8th level or so. His name was "Mighty" Moe Mitchner (did anyone have Estes' model rockets--The Mighty Moe?). Goofy name aside, Moe was an Archduke in my buddy's homebrew campaign. The Duchy was called Borong. The people, the Boronger. The land was at war. Would the Archduke press an opportunity to split from the Kingdom or would he remain loyal to the queen (who, as I remember, was hot)?

Those were good times. And, as you can plainly see, I remember them vividly and fondly. I would never have thought that there would be another character as fun and interesting to play and develop as Moe.

I started to suspect, however, from JSL's first post back in early October, that this group might actually do it. This might be the group, and Vesh might be the character, that finally rivals the fun Moe had tromping around forests and mountains of Borong.

This is so much fun, you guys, and a great form of escapism that has enriched my brain, tickled my funny bone, and warmed my insides. Here's to another 1000 posts. And thank you to all of you for making this great.

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

It is quite remarkable that people from 3 continents can get together to have fun like this. That and two of us disappeared for a time, well 3 now, but the game has continued unabated. Any word from Talion? I liked that Corran was a fairly normal guy in with a bunch of oddballs. Well, Malcolm is pretty normal too.

Remarkable? Not Hardly. At least not in THIS day and age. BAck when I was most of YOUR guys age? Yep. Pretty impressive.

Still pretty cool though, no matter what decade your from! :D

(And playing with you guys is a treat!)

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

I just find everything remarkable. I'm sitting here typing this on one computer, and then you can all read it on your computers!

Although my capacity for wonder has been compared to a 10 year old's. I think the person saying it meant it to be somewhat scathing but I take it as a compliment. And it helps with teaching.

Yeah, I'm glad I get to play in such a great group too. I can't wait to see where some of the characters are going and I keep wondering how JSL is going to handle parts of the AP (especially the parts that didn't go well for our group:).

Arctaris wrote:

I am always curious to know what parts have not gone well for other groups.

I know there are some parts of the story that have logical disconnects. That is always going to be the case in a published adventure where the writer cannot possibly anticipate the interests or reactions of every group. Also, I'm trying to fill in as many of those gaps as I can and give the PCs a good chance to reason out what is going on before blundering in.

As for challenging combats, I have heard of groups getting beat up by the first couple of goblin groups. Alot of that can be just the luck of the dice. At first level, combat is really a crapshoot.

Also, Tsuto can be tough in the published adventure - and I wanted him to be even tougher. But I didn't want him turning into a canary and giving up all the goods (as he seems to be doing in other campaigns). From a design standpoint, that required him to escape the first encounter with you. And I worked out his entire statistical design to that end.

I am a little surprised that no one has been reduced to negative hp yet. A couple of people have been close. And Vesh was a confirmed crit away from the morgue when Tsuto shot him.

I think that the encounters we've run have generally been tougher than the published encounters. What has clearly helped is that this group has an above average AC for second level. I think the low is around 16 and Corran, Ehlissa, and Salome can push into the 19-20 range. SRD goblins can't hit that. Heck, even the sinspawn (as published) can't hit that. Also, the meat is fairly well distributed with 3-4 characters able to contribute significant offense. The result is that a few well placed attacks by the enemy do not cripple the entire party.

The difficulty of the combats will increase a bit now, but it will never be a dungeon crawl meatgrinder because that style just doesn't work in PbP. So most of the time you will be pretty fresh; you won't be limping into the final encounter with no spells and half hp.

Now that you're about third level, it's less likely that someone will be gakked by a fluke die roll. Coincidentally, you're about at the point in the story where you can take the fight to the enemy. I'd expect them to be alot more tenacious on their home turf.

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

JSL only, spoilers (hence the spoiler tags:))

Spoiler:

Burnt Offerings The Yeth hounds and Nualia With the exception of my character being blinded by an unfortunate critical hit, Nualia was something of a let down, especially after the Yeth hounds. We couldn't bypass their DR and eventually had to retreat from that fight.
Skinsaw Murders: Ironbriar was a tough fight for our group only because the DM (not myself at that point) gave him an extra level, a 5th level rogue/fighter and two lower level rogues. This was with a group of four players so with our larger group I'd highly recommend adding a few levels and minions to that room, maybe even a higher level cultist in the ruling circle (which would even make more sense.
Xaneesha didn't really work for our group (which is smaller than this one; four players). Only some quick thinking and sheer dumb luck saved us from a TPK. If I were to run it again I'd take away her sorceress levels.
Also, I felt that the whole Magnimar section of the adventure needed to be fleshed out more. There weren't quite enough details to reasonably lead us onto Ironbriar.
Haven't gotten very far in Hook Mountain yet; if you want I'll keep posting updates on what my group has problems with if you want.

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

OK, we need to get lots of CLW shots, and if Ehlissa can get some better armour, then that would be nice.

OK, so SLidell is rambling a little.
I mean a little more than usual,...
Oh you know what I mean! :P

I'm having to re-read the old posts to remember what mysteries we haven't solved yet, and what clues we had that we haven't used to solve anything with yet! Feel free to drop a hint, and rub it in Slidell's face!

I may have to make another page/spoiler to my Slidell character sheet. A log book for mysteries, clues, and similar things. Cuz I'm at the point in my life where, in order for me to learn or remember something new, I first have to FORGET something else! (No, I'm not THAT old, my brain is just that FULL! Yeah, that's my story!) :)

There was some discussion about how far this group has come, and what makes this campaign as good as it is. In addition to genuine interest, creativity, and fun writing on the part of the players, I think one advantage we have is a DM who is flexible and able to make adjustments to the game/rules/etc. in order to help things run more smoothly and enjoyably in this format. (I'm not kissing up; I genuinely do like the guy.)

That said, JSL just reminded me, "Don't believe everything you read in the adventure." I don't know what they are, but you can be sure he always has a couple of tricks up his sleeve!

I know it's hard to separate player knowledge from character knowledge. At this point, Salome doesn't know much about what's going on (much like her player). But where do you draw the line?

Yeah, this wouldn't work without JSL's DMing skill. Kudos to our DM.

I don't really know how I seperate my knowledge from Mal's. Mostly I guess I just try to think of what his experiences have been and what conclusions they lead him to. I think I've suceeded in keeping my knowledge of the AP from coloring Mal's reactions to things. It also helps that JSL is making enough minor modifications to the adventure as written to keep me on my toes.

Yep. This game is fun! I credit the DM. He is almost as diabolically clever as my old college buddy/GM! (That's a complement, by the way!) ANd heck, he may even more diabolical, it's hard to tell over the internet. ;P

As far as separating player/character knowledge, I don't think there is any 'one way' to do it. You just try really hard to remember what your character actually has seen or heard, and try not to let what YOU know, either from reading the MM, or reading the scenario, or other PbP's, from 'bleeding over' into your character's mind. As a theater major, (3 degrees, that and $5 will get me a cup of coffee at Starbucks) I might have an easier time of it than some people. ;)

I may not be the right guy to ask about separation of knowledge, because it's just so much fun to write for Slidell when he's on a roll! That might skew my judgment a little bit!

Sorry I haven't contributed today. I have not been feeling well. Thanks for conversing amongst yourselves in my absence.

Fabes, as soon as you've decided on a sword enhancement Father Zantus is ready at the cathedral.

The others can try their luck at the market or just hang out. Ameiko will be back in a couple of hours with some news that you may find interesting.

I love it. "Welcome. This is my sword of DOOM!"

---------------------------------

Okay, so rather than role play all of this shopping. Either after the ceremony or tomorrow IG, Vesh goes a-shopping for:

1. 3 regular ol' arrows to replenish his stash (15cp)
2. A masterwork composite shortbow (320 gp)
3. resize the old +1 arrows (58gp)
4. buy 2 CLW for the group (this is Vesh's 75gp contribution to the group healing hoard.)

NOTE: I'm assuming that this is the amount that we're all going to chip in. If we kick in an extra 25 gp, to make it 100 gp each, let me know.

I have made all the above changes to my character sheet. Also, don't forget to add 100 xp for Monday, February 18th. Vesh is up to 2690 xp.

OK, Sli will shop for the following,
1) Masterwork Quarterstaff-(Is 'Darkwood' OK?) 10GP
2) Cold Iron Dagger 22GP (I think that's right?)(He already has a silvered one)
3) 100GP of special ink, to scribe his 'magic Weapon' scroll into his spellbook. (Now he can make his own scrolls with that spell!)
4) 350GP to purchase a silver Holy Symbol (Of Nethys, natch!) and the incense, silver, holy water, etc. to 'enchant' it to a 'Cloak Pin of Protection' (Cloak Pin, (Brooch, takes up the neck space), Prot. vs Evil 1/Day) This would be CL1, Lvl1 Spell, 1/day

@JSL~ you have been QUITE clear on certain 'item point' costs; scrolls, potions, and 0 & 1st lvl wands, but how many 'item points' would this item be? 1st or 2nd lvl? (Lvl 2 item because it's 1/day?) Or did you post this too, and I just missed it? (I have been collecting our posts regarding these new rules and collecting them onto a word DOC. But I don't remember seeing this answer!)

5) 2 CLW potions for 75GP for the 'party potions' (+ the one he already bought)
6) A couple of scrolls of 1st lvl spells to add to his repertoire. 100GP (This is a possible, not definite. Will probably use points and scribe a couple of scrolls myself instead of adding more spells to my spellbook!)

7)'Nobles Outfit' 75GP This will be an ecletic collection from various outfits, but all finely made and capable of holding enchantments. (He may wait on this, as even if he has the 'points' to enchant a cloak, hat and boots, he won't have the GOLD to pay for the enchantments!) :D

EDIT- Just realized the above prices (except for the CLW I believe) Did NOT include the 25% discount for the fair! I will re-visit the costs tomorrow, too tired now. Nighters! :P

Dark Archive

Add this to my list (I forgot until I looked at my character sheet):

5. Masterwork Short Sword (80gp)
6. And one more potion of CLW for giggles and
7. Some mundane gear that I will note on my character sheets (dropping torches for some other light source, dumping hemp rope for silk, etc.)

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

Apart from the ceremony, Ehlissa will sell the chainmail for however much that garners and buy breastplate armour.

So that would be 150 gp as opposed to 200gp thanks to the market discount?

If there's any money left over she'll buy a CLW potion as well.

Dark Archive

I forgot to add a few things to my shopping list that I already put on my character sheet:

5. Masterwork Short sword
6. One more potion of CLW for giggles

I'm also going to shift and upgrade some of my mundane gear (dropping torches, hemp rope to silk, etc.)

EDIT: JSL, are Sunrods okay?

EDIT: What about anti-toxin? If so, the group might want some, but it seems kind of expensive when compared to a potion of CLW. Opinions?

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

If we can get it, then it might be a good idea to get anti-toxin. CLW isn't going to do much good against anger-juice and gobbo blades stat diminishing effects.

Ehlissa really needs that healing touch - would Salome be able to oblige at some time or maybe Father Zantus?

Sorry I haven't been too active posting lately. Combination of writer's block and morning sickness -- plus trying to wade through the Magical Item Compendium and figure out this whole new economy. Depending on the off-line time I have to do my research today, I'm hoping to have a shopping list this evening.

Salome has an extra CLW or two to cast today (Slidell didn't want one), and could oblige at the cathedral (where she spent most of the afternoon) now that the ceremony is done.

Anyone have a potion of cure light nausea?

Well, I'm on my second marriage (Some of us NEVER learn!) ;)
But the ONE thing thetwo (Lucky?) women have in common, (Besides me!)

It seems that there is only one cure for morning sickness,...

Spoiler:

"ABRACA-BIRTH-DAY!"

Oh, and congrats! :D

Yeah, I'm still getting the final details sorted in my head for this new Magic Item system, but I think I'm gonna like it!

Oh, and if you have any CMinorW at the end of the day, say dinnertime? You could probably offer Slidell again. It's not that he didn't WANT them, he just didn't think he NEEDED it! But I just don't trust our diabolic DM to give us another 2 days of complete rest to heal up to full on my own! :D

I'm just going to do what I'm told with the magic item system. I have enough trouble with real-life economics. My poor bank imbalance...

Lots of questions. No way I can remember them all. But here's a try.

Rags: The prot/evil item is item level 2. The 350 gp price is correct for OTC purchase. Half that (175 gp) for materials to make it (plus the cost of the item to be enchanted, of course). Also, it will take half a day (4 hours) of work. Also, be sure to account for any time required to scribe scrolls or add the spell to your spell book.

Santinj@: All mundane stuff in the PHB is available.

Ehlissa: take 75% credit for selling old stuff.

The 20% discount applies to mundane gear in the PHB only. Special materials (many of which are laced with high concentrations of precious metals or stones) cost full price because no one could ever stay in business selling them at discount.

Please work out your shopping tonight and then it will take place OOC. I'd like to have the group meet for dinner starting tonight.

You know it!

@JSL~
Thank you for the magic item info. Things start to make sense now.
As I mentioned earlier, I have started to collect all of our comments and discussions about the updated magic item system. Would you like me to try and type it all out in a more concise, (from me, THAT's funny!) "MIC" type format?
I probably won't be fast about it, (I have to work sometime), but maybe if we work together it would go faster than with just one.

Let me know,...

EDIT- BTW, what IS the cost of a 'masterwork' ordinary item, like a holy symbol? At 10X cost, some items start to be cheaper to just buy outright instead of making ourselves! Or is the 'masterwork' requirement now only for weapons & armor? (AS long as the 'ordinary' item is of decent quality, at least, of course.)

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

I'll contribute as much as needed to curative potions.
Oh, and congrats Dreamer!

!@#$ site ate my post! Here we go again,...

Sli wanders the fair & cannot resist the following; (With discount,..)

1) 8GP Masterwork Quarterstaff-'Darkwood'
2) 17GP Cold Iron Dagger
3) 80GP for special ink, to scribe his 'magic Weapon' scroll into his spellbook.
4) 20GP to purchase a silver Holy Symbol/Cloak Pin (Of Nethys, natch!)
5) 175GP (NO discount) for incense, Powdered Silver, etc. to enchant said holy symbol.
6) 75GP 2 CLW potions for the 'party potions'
7) 25GP (NO discount) for enough material to scribe 4 scrolls of his own (at half cost, because he HAS the Scribe Scroll feat)

Total SHopping costs= 400GP
Let me know if there is a fair discount on 'creation materials' as I did NOT apply the discount to those.

Sli will spend 4 hours, 2 'magic creation points', and the special materials to enchant the holy symbol/cloak pin into a 1/day, Prot/Evil item.

He will spend 1 hour (I believe?) and the special inks to scribe 'Magic Weapon' into his spellbook.

He will spend 4 more hours, 2 'magic creation points' and the scroll materials to scribe 4 scrolls of lvl 1 spells at CL:1
(Probably: 1X Magic Weapon, 1X Color Spray, 1X Benign Transposition, & 1X Prot/Evil. He already has a scroll of Sleep.)

This does NOT all have to be consecutive. Scribe the spell in the morning, take a break. 1 Batch of scrolls in the afternoon, (If nothings going on!) enchant item next morning after breakfast.
easily fits within 2 days, non-stressful, (mostly) and he's done before your '3 day layover' is complete. With time in between to spend time with the others.

He will have 2 'Magic Creation Points' Left. He COULD enchant 1 more item (like his staff) with a 1/day, lvl 1 spell, (He does have the money) but he's saving up,... :)
(Be afraid,be VERY afraid!) ;P

Look at us! It's like Christmas in February!! Let's go shopping at the Sandpoint Outlet Stores, conveniently located off of I-84 and Biggs Junction...

Sorry.

Anyway, Dreamer, I totally glossed over the reference to morning sickness! Congratulations! I take it that this is a new development? (I say that because isn't morning sickness generally a first trimester thing?)

My wife never got morning sickness per se, but her sense of smell became more acute than our yellow lab's. I remember the tragic morning that I was frying bacon; she came into the kitchen and told me that I needed to stop, that the smell of frying bacon was nauseating to her. Bacon! The meat of the gods! I nearly wept. Why bacon, God? Why bacon?!

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

OK, here we go!

Chainmail - sold to the greasy merchant over there for 75 gp!

Breastplate (normal price 200gp) - to me today for 160gp

Total cost: 85gp

Queries re: the longsword of doom TM

How will casting the spell work? Does Ehlissa have to concentrate on using it and aim it like the spell? Or would I be able to 'cast' it as it were with a successful strike? I am happy with whatever way - I'll be able to add flavour.

And how many craft points has it used up?

santinj@ wrote:

Thanks all for the good wishes. It is still pretty early, but I expect to feel better in about a month. As one of my friends reminds me, it takes a lot of work to make a person (try getting a feat in that!).

I can't eat anything grilled (or smell anything being grilled), and my own cure light nausea potion involves ginger ale with a side of saltine crackers and peanut butter. Go figure.

As far as grilling=kryptonite goes, maybe that's why I haven't come up with a Sandpoint Market shopping list yet -- aside from a couple of CLW potions and maybe a read languages scroll, nothing that I've seen really appeals to me. Suggestions?

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

A bag or backpack. Pot, kettle, black as I don't have one either really.

Or something whacky like a tanglefoot bag.

Congrats! I meant to say earlier.

FabesMinis wrote:

Standard action. Although it could theoretically be upgraded to a swift action - but I'm still toying with the cost for that because I think the standard cost for quickened doom is way too expensive for what you get.

FabesMinis wrote:

None because you basically paid full market price for the enchantment (instead of half market price) and Father Zantus did the enchanting. If anyone used points, it was him. But maybe he has the feat and used XP instead.
