So, my players are at level 13 at the end of CoBI. They completely bypassed the Gianganto-Croc and the Eely Demon, which is probably why they are still 13th level. I know SoSc is written for 15th level characters, so I want to have them at least halfway to 15th by the time they show up in Scuttlecove. We're currently playing through "Prophry House Horror" with the Jade Ravens and then taking a break to start something else and for my mental health.
What do the esteemed minds of the boards think would be a good side-trek? I read somewhere (perhaps in the "Adding another villian" thread) about two Cults of Demo who act out each heads unconsciousness. I've been toying around an idea with dinos and horny monkey wars but don't have anything down on paper yet. I'm at work, so I don't have any of my magazines to reference.
Oh! And then theres a module in Dungeon #120 called "Lost Temple of Demogorgon". Would that work?

have they gone through the "hunt the monsters" suggested in Tides of Dread?
If not, a few CR 13 monsters should get them up and running. and then, perhaps an encounter with some feuding crimson fleet ships on the way to scuttlecove would be appropriate. perhaps 1 is fleeing and the party intercepts, only to have 2 more ships converge on them. a single Crimson Fleet Captain and 8 or so pirates would be appropriately challenging, i believe.
perhaps some RP-style anti-Meravanchi politicking in Farshore, working to calm the rabble-rousers and work against their actions?
heck, just have the Wastrilith seek them out....he does have some good capabilities, and if he t-ports out into the water, there's not much out there that could stand against him.
then, there's always that green dragon sitting around on the isle, just waiting for some adventurers to come along and be eaten.

I totally forgot about the Legendary Monsters of the Isle. That probably won't sit well with the druid...One problem with that is that I've already alluded to the party that Lavinia is in trouble, so they are going to be booking back to Farshore posthaste.
I like the Crimson Fleet angle. Maybe I can work that into the Cult of the Lizard/Monkey I've got...

As I was digging through my First Edition stuff, I found module S4 - Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. It is made for 1E levels 6-10, but could easily be made tough enough for 13-15 as you convert it to 3.5. Why does it fit - it's Iggiwilv -centric. The caverns could be on the IoD or on the mainland near Scuttlecove.

Dungeon 151? I thought 150 was the last issue. Maybe this is a joke and I just didn't get it...?
Drawdy |
No joke. WoTCs plan is to create content online and part of that content is an online version of Dungeon magazine. It's name may change when all is said and done but for now the October 'issue' is being called 151. The wizards site will have more details.
Wow. They stole Dungeon. Got to admit, I quit following what WoTC was doing after they cancelled the mags. WoTC can rot in hell.

well, WotC may just have overlooked the fact, that people buy a title regularly because they like the content.
Since the content (e.g. the authors and their works for 3.5 ) stays/-ed with "Pathfinder"----> "Dear WotC have fun with "Dungeon" Online, but if you think I will purchase that stuff, you are sadly mistaken !
Especially if you start to publish 4E stuff, since I am not going to buy that either... hence" *wave*
Drawdy |
No, they took back what was theirs. Dungeon and Dragon were only licensed to Paizo. So they did not steal them at all.
But they're stopping print publication, which pisses me off. Screw WotC.

I have yet to meet a gamer that doesn't have internet access. Why is an electronic document so terrible? Magazines only have portability on their side. That's it.
Nearly four times the content for about the same monthly cost as one print issue of Dragon? Yes, please.

Because it's cumbersome to bring a laptop into the bathroom with me when I'm pinching a loaf...magazines are perfect. Actually, it's much easier to take magazines anywhere. It's not very comfortable to sit back in the recliner with a laptop on your lap...a magazine is much better.
What if the power goes out?
Internet goes down?
WotC site goes down?
WotC/Hasbro sells D&D (they certainly wouldn't keep the online versions of the mag archived)?
Forget your password?
Don't renew your subscription (lose the old ones you already bought)?
Plus, there's just something about holding the magazine in your hand that's more personal than online content. Oh yeah...it doesn't strain my eyes.
I could probably think of more.

Hard to read a magazine in the dark, too.
Internet goes down?
I can count on one hand the number of times my internet access has gone down in the past 10 years. Unless you're talking about the whole internet going down, in which case that's why they let you download the articles and save them to your computer. Also, if the whole internet goes down, I doubt there'll be people left to read the articles.
WotC site goes down?
Again, you can save them to your computer for later perusal.

See above.
Forget your password?
Click the "Forgot Password?" button.

They've already said this isn't the case. You buy it, you own it.
Plus, there's just something about holding the magazine in your hand that's more personal than online content. Oh yeah...it doesn't strain my eyes.
Never have had a problem with eye strain on computers, can't really comment on this one.
Plus, the electronic format lends itself well to people like me who want handouts for their players. With a print copy, I have to find a copier, copy a page from the magazine, cut away all the text, etc. Just to have a copy of one illustration from the magazine.
Or, I could right click on the image and click "print selection". Wow, difficult.
Personally, though, I'm done derailing this thread. I apologize to the OP and the other posters in the thread for starting this tangent.

I read thru the "Lost Temple..." module and while it is designed for level 14 which is pretty close depending on your party's strength, I won't use it for my STAP (at least not without significant changes). I just think some parts echo too closely certain parts of the STAP.
I guess you could use LToD as a bit of foreshadowing if you are so inclined.
Cheers!

Just like the PCs in my campaign, I can use candles to read a mag if the power goes out.
Also, I don't want to use up a ton of hard drive/flash drive space by downloading all the mags. It's much easier to use bookshelf space. Besides, I've had my hard drive crash more than once and one time my back up files were corrupted so I lost everything. I can still put my hands on every mag...
With the forgot password button, I'm still waiting for a password on another site I requested three times over 48 hours ago. No, I don't keep a list of my passwords.
I can print hand outs and such for my players now thanks to how the Paizo staff has put those portions online. I can also step three feet over to my copier if I want that as well.
Let's face it, there's a majority of people out there who would prefer the mags to be printed. WotC handled the whole thing terribly.
