Yeah. My best advice is to watch "gamer connection" section 2 sections down. It's hit or miss. When a game is announced, it's a feeding frenzy to get aboard; you probably have 2 to 4 hour window.
Another tactic is to read a few of the threads, see what games you like, and find their discussion thread and say, "I'd like to be an alternate." Every once in a while a game will lose a player due to real life b.s., so a lot of dm's will hold alternate slots for people expressing interest. That's how I got in Aubrey's Eberron campaign; the other alternate guy couldn't play cos he had a lot of stuff to do...

I've been wondering about this phenomenon, and I think when I start the Dark Sun campaign, I'm going to have everyone roll randomly, then open fortune cookies to see what "lucky numbers" come up until I have four or five players. That way the slow posters can still play. :)
