Good point, DD. It reminds me of how obsolete my West End Star Wars books are at this point.
If you are a ravenous fan of Star Wars, the first D20 edition of WotC Star Wars had conversions from West End's D6 system in the appendix.
Or...In my case
Traveller for Hero System is now out on PDF. Darn, I had just converted to GURPS 4th edition. And then Mongoose is coming out with a Starship Troopers for Traveller next year. I just bought Monte Cook's d20 World of Darkness. Sure its for New WoD but...
Time for me to convert my Original World of Darkness (my over 200+ supplements) over to the dark, er, d20 side. Bwahahahahaha!

World of Darkness was putting out new editions every 5 years or so also, I wasn't around for the switch from 2nd to Revised (or first to second for that matter) but there was a big huba-baloo about going to nWoD. I myself have still refused the switch, ironically it seems the be the exact opposite situation of D&D though, the big gripe w/ the WoD changes was about fluff not crunch. In D&D it's all about the changes to the crunch.

I find it strange that other table top RPG companies can put out multiple editions of games and no one complains at all. The fans pony up the cash and on we go. WoTC does a 4th edition and sight unseen everyone is down on "The Man" for making a buck and putting out a new edition.
Actually, when the world of darkness ended and they released the reboot, they lost me. I had almost every Vampire supplement and several from all of the other games (including Changeling & wraith).
I likely never will buy another WoD product (except maybe Monte's D20). They told me that their world was ending, and i believed them. I was looking forward to something new from White Wolf. But suddenly, they release a reboot? not for me.
And i'm still sticking with my conviction.

If the demons/devils thing is any indication, it's going to be the fluff, too. As a big fan of the fluff, this is where WotC starting to lose me completely with 4E.

I am still trying to think of rpg companies that did as you suggest; sure white wolf did it; everyone I know hates the new edition and changes, but that is only one version; Rift/Paladium; hmm same edition no changes; Hero game systems; sure; got an update which is a better ed then another new version so that makes 3; dont know anything about their new version. Role Master; not sure; I also have space master and have not heard of any new ed. Gurps I dont do; but they probably had an update; thing is; except for Rifts; no other game really has all the bleeding book supplements that 3.5 had which is why WOTC totally sucks beatle hiney; but then we are all wondering how much 3.5 stuff we can use in 4.0; but there is nothing strange about saying enough is enough; this change in D&D was not a player driven change and that makes all the difference in the world.

Yes indeed 3.5 has a glut of books and source materials. More than any other RPG on the planet. Even more since we have all the 3rd Party publisher stuff.
2.0 had the "boxed set" glut.
I learned a lesson from 3.5. Not all source material is of value. I carry this lesson forward with how I will view all 4.0 supplements. Thank god for places like here where you can get an honest review of a product.

I was perusing through the new idea content that they're thinking of pushing for 4e...
While I like the 'idea' of power sources and party roles to help new players better define what their character is suppose to do, I find they're trying to change D&D to appease MMORPG users to get to the table.
While this 'might' be a novel concept, you couldn't pay me to have your average MMORPG lamebrain, who lacks any imagination whatsoever, at my game table!
Now they're talking about completely revising all races, changing some of the base concepts that have been in the game since creation.
(elves are being squashed down so the 'standard elf' is your wild elf who favours nature magic. Ummm. ok, that mean that Ranger or Druid will be favoured class? And that 'High Elves' are taking on their ancestors moniker of Eladrin. Gnomes so far have been given the boot, and Half-races are simply going to be half-human templates, rather than the half-elves and half-orcs we know them to be)
And not only are they going to change the races, they're not going to release all the races in the 1st core book... no... to keep us buying more books, they're going to release races trickled over 4+ PHB's which - of course - the hardcore gamers are going to want to pick up, so that they FINALLY have the full game at their fingertips.
This sounds like nothing but a huge cash cow to me... they want us to keep buying book, after book, after book, and not caring whether it all meshes together anymore. I don't know if this is to keep the 3rd party D20 publishers in check, or if they think we're really that gullible.

If the goal of D&D 4e is to make the game better, smoother, and easier without losing the cannon D&D 'feel' AND make Hasbro money we have a win-win.
If the goal is just to churn out a new set of rules and hope that the years 2000 to 2003 repeat themselves in the industry and make Hasbro a ton of cash then we will lose. Much like how World War 2 pulled the US out of a depression, wars of today do not booster the economy. Hasbro will steer itself down a path that will disillusion the D&D players.
D&D will not go away. It might eventually end back in the hands of a game community that understands it's potential.
