Oh, my. Chris West, you've outdone yourself with Lands of Mystery.
You realize, of course, that I'm going to have to start a new campaign just to use your map? It's simply outstanding.
I agree 100%! WTF am I gonna do to make time for Varisia and this and STAP! Gods, if I don't get anymore gaming stuff for years I will still have a tone of stuff to do...
Seriously though, Thanks Mr. West!FH

Thanks, guys! I'm so glad you like the map, and delighted to hear that it'll be used for a campaign! That's just what I was hoping for.
I'll be making my own notes about the locations on the map available in a few days to suggest ideas and plot hooks--a sort of gazetter of the Lands of Mystery that DMs can use to flesh it out if they wish. I'll post about it in this thread when it's available for download, but of course I'd also love to hear whatever ideas you folks have about the places in the map. I hope it's useful in your campaigns for a long time to come! :)

I hate to sound businessy but....why not enlist a person or 2 and write up a campaign setting for it. You can probably rope in one of the big names at Paizo and with your name and another heavy hitter or 2 you could produce something really nice and get Paizo to publish it. Just a thought, and something I wish I could do.
I would definately buy it though....FH

What FH said.
Maybe you've thought of it already though, having put the Land of Mystery together.
Then again, a mapped but barely described world is a DM's dream. No continuity to worry about. No players telling you "Well that's not what [supplement X] says." A near empty slate to put your own mark on.
Thanks Chris!

I'd love to create a full-fledged campaign world someday, especially working with the folks at Paizo--but if I ever do, I'd like to start from scratch with that in mind. (Plus, they have their hands full with Golarion these days; I doubt they would want to create another new setting to compete with it at this point.) I've got a homebrewed pantheon of deities and tons more ideas for cool places with their own stories to tell, histories and politics and all that, but this map isn't the one to showcase it.
The Lands of Mystery were designed to be exactly what Mactaka describes - a world for DMs to flesh out however they wish, without fear that someday someone will come along and contradict their creations with "official" products. I'll share my ideas about the places named on the map, but beyond that I have no intention of developing the world any further. It has been bequeathed to the readers of Dungeon; it's yours now, to name and explore. :)

AARRGGHHH!! just as i was about to start Pathfinder! i now have a new campaign world thanks to you. :) great work all around, with every map. i only hope you'll be putting out more of these areas, and maybe with the help of the fans here, i believe we may just pull it off! again, you have added much more to the entire d&d experience through the years with your evocative and powerfully artistic cartography.

hey,
here's a map of the first part of my campaign incorporating these maps. Mr. West, i want you to know these are for personal use only and i've givne you credit for the design. i don't want to have any misconception that i am taking credit for your fine work. i couldn't help but transfer the scans to my corel draw program and working on it, adding new things, etc. here's a link to the site where it is.
http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/terrainmonkey/?action=view&curre nt=landsofmysterymap1.jpg
if this doesn't work, just go to photobucket.com, and look for terrainmonkey. you'll be able to find it, i'm sure. i'll try to detail some more in the coming days, but i have a lot of work to do outside of adding and creating maps so i may not be as quick on the draw as one would hope.
my basic campaing idea is to have th illithids and the drow try to take over the surface realms by dominating the local human and elven tribes to war against each other just to sow terror and war among the races they hate so much.
edit: just copy/paste the URL above and take out the space between the e and the N in current. i don't know why the boards do this....

I haven't received my issue 150 yet and I can hardly wait. I've been looking forward to seeing a Chris West poster map for quite some time.
I'm still trying to put some ideas to paper for the Forsaken Rift.
I've got an idea kicking around involving a group of Efreet and Fire Giants who've formed an uneasy alliance after taking over Cinderforge.

Loved the map. I'm probably going to use when I build a new campaign. But wasn't there another similar to the lands of mystery. I believe it depicted a strip of landmass surrounded on both sides by water with some cities included already but without names. Don't remember if this was in Dungeon, Dragon, or in my dreams, perhaps. Anyway, I'm wondering if one inch equals 50 miles is okay to use with this map since I can't seem to find the scales.
Weird, doesn't show that I'm a Pathfinder Charter Subscriber. Hopefully, I'll still get my hard copy of the Player's Guide.

Looks good, Terrainmonkey! Let me know how it works out!
My most recent poster map in Dungeon, unless I'm forgetting something, was the city of Cauldron from the beginning of the Shackled City adventure path. It has been a long while, in other words. Before that was Tunarath, the githyanki city. And that's basically all of them. :)
I just finished writing a gazetteer of the places named on the Lands of Mystery map; I'll try to get that available online before Gen Con, but I have a lot of other stuff to get done in that time. Keep your fingers crossed...
Incidentally, the Gazetteer includes my notes about the published Maps of Mystery, so you can learn what was going through my head when I worked on the Forsaken Rift. There are tidbits about a Resistance War, the Seige of Kharadad, the magical protections of Traevantahl, the purpose of the Drakebourn Sanctum, and so on. It might be of interest to you, though I suspect your plot involving the Efreet and Fire Giants might be more interesting than what I wrote about Cinderforge.
In any case, if you download my gazetteer, don't treat it as anything you should stick to; it's just a collection of ideas, not an official campaign setting that's going to be built on later.

This might sound crazy, but the Lands of Mystery seem more exciting to me than "The Pathfinder Chronicles" campaign setting. Although I'll probably be just as excited about the lands around pathfinder when a large map is finally sold to all of us fellow addicts(all we have is small snippets right now...curse you! lol). Especially when West will probably be the one doing the cartography. I agree with FH that this setting could easily sell, but I like that you want to leave a blank slate for DM's to run with.

Just got mine last night and it is awesome. I spent more time looking at the 'simple' poster than I did the end of STAP. I was thinking I too will need to start a campaign just for this. I appreciate that many of MofM have been incorporated into the Lands and but even more so that it is a blank canvas. My most recent campaign (pre STAP) was using quite a lot of MoM though so this will work with that campaign should we ever go back. (I loved the ziggurat (?) that is bigger then the cities!) :) WotC put a map of the week for a while (maybe they still do have not looked since the Golem got the contract) and maybe you would consider doing something like that. Even if you sold it by the map I think you would get a lot of hits, because these are just that inspiring.

Wow, CW. You've always done amazing cartography and made the map in the back a major part of what I looked forward to each month in Dungeon. But this is something else, entirely.
Granted, I'm an easy mark: I've put down otherwise perfectly decent fantasy novels I've browsed in bookstores, sometimes getting a raised eyebrow from my wife. I'll shrug and say, "No map."
What you've given us here is such fuel for the imagination, it's like a whole year's worth of Victoria's Secret catalogues rolled into one beautiful poster. If you lean close enough over the map, you can hear whispers of the thousands of stories waiting to be told. Or maybe that's just my overactive DM imagination revving into high gear.
Yeah. I'm with the rest of them. I just may have to squeeze in yet another campaign because of you. In fact, I was contemplating where to place my GameMastery modules so as not to confuse my players by putting them in Golarian along with the RotRL AP. I think that particular problem is now solved. To say I'm eagerly awaiting the gazetteer is a bit of an understatement.

LOL! :)
Scott & Le: Thanks for the compliments! I've thought about doing monthly online maps with a subscription service or something, but A) I know nothing about how to set up a commercial website, B) I'd then need to find time to queeze out more work, and keep it on a regular schedule, and C) I don't think one map by itself is worth much of a subscription fee; I'd need to find a way to do two or three per month to make it worthwhile for the customers.
Moleculo: I never thought I'd see my work compared to a Victoria's Secret catalog. I'm not sure if I should feel honored by the high praise or slightly uncomfortable at the implications. :-D
I've sent the Gazetteer to the Paizo folks and am awaiting their feedback. It'll probably be available at their site, or mine, or both, shortly after Gen Con.

OK, now that she's retreated - somewhat mollified - dude, c'mon. Your maps are pretty and all but let's be realistic here. Still... your creations will be treated with utmost respect and nothing untoward will happen in their presence, nothing you couldn't comfortably relate to your grandmother. I promise.
Before you tear off to GenCon, would you mind venturing an opinion on where in the Lands of Mystery map you might transplant Falcon's Hollow and the Bloodsworn Vale? Inquiring DMs want to know.

Whew. That's a relief. :)
Of course, I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be relating imaginings of fantastic places and heroes to my grandmother, either, if she was around to hear them. I'd probably get some funny looks. :)
Before you tear off to GenCon, would you mind venturing an opinion on where in the Lands of Mystery map you might transplant Falcon's Hollow and the Bloodsworn Vale? Inquiring DMs want to know.
Sure.
I'd put the Bloodsworn Vale in Shale Ridge Pass, as the people of the Solajrin Theopolis region try to cut a road through to Greenvale and Winecrest. In the Gazettteer, it's the other way around, but that works just fine. They could be trying to meet in the middle.
Falcon's Hollow is a bit trickier. I'd probably rotate the Falcon's Holow Environs map 180 degrees and use it in place of the town of Haleford. That, or put Falcon's Hollow on the northwest inlet to Elgiss Lake. Yeah, that should work.
A bit of trivia: a close friend of mine was a huge Judas Priest fan growing up, and loved their lead singer; Haleford is simply a respelling of Halford. I apologize if this means you can never take the name seriously again. :)

Chris, fantastic map. Better than brain-munching.
Wow! That's high praise. :)
Is this map OGL by any chance? Not that I'm working on a project or anything... 0=)
Nope, I'm afraid not. Like the rest of the maps appearing in/with Dungeon, copyright to the Lands of Mystery map is owned by WotC now. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't use it in your own campaigns--it just means you can't sell it.
I would be very interested in buying the full set of Maps of Mystery if they did. That would be awesome!
WotC could choose to collect them in a book if they wished; I don't know if they have any plans to do so, though.
By the way, Paizo's still taking a look at that gazetteer I wrote for the Lands of Mystery; I'm giving them the first chance to put it online as a web enhancement for the issue, but if they decline for whatever reason (I know thy're very busy these days), I'll post it on my own site.
Here's a sneak peek of one entry as an example of what you can expect from it; most locations have approximately this level of detail:
Oasis
– Those who dwell near the Demon Coast consider this city the jewel of the western seas, and it does have a remarkable beauty that stands in stark contrast to the lifeless desert beyond. Oasis was founded as a refuge camp for people fleeing the abyssal hosts that ravaged the mainland after the fall of Atraesia, and it quickly became recognized as a noteworthy destination for desert nomads and drifters seeking trade. It lives on as a free city with a reputation for protecting any traveler in need of safe harbor, and survives purely on the commerce attracted to such a place. Without the merchants that fill her food markets with exotic goods from distant shores, Oasis would shrivel up and be lost to the sands.

What scale would you suggest for the map (1 inch = how many miles)?
I honestly have no idea. I never tried to calculate it, because I wanted DMs to have the flexibility to set the scale however they wish. Some like more overland travel than others, and some may wish to assume that more/smaller villages dot the landscape than what is shown on the map.
A few references to the size of things crept into my gazetteer nonetheless, such as the Blistering Height megavolcano being so tall that the top can not be seen from the bottom, and the Colossus of Atraesia being the size of a large mountain--but there's really nothing to indicate an exact scale. When I was designing it, I thought of the Frostmere as an inland sea at the top of the world, and the Rainlands as being situated along the equator; depending on the size of the planet itself (completely up to you whether or not it's Earth-like) that might give you some basis for calculation.
Christopher West your are my Hero.
Wow, thanks very much! :)
Crud, running my first "Lands of Mystery" game tonight and left my map in my pack at the office! I need a good location for some redwood/rainforest (think Washington State, Oregon, North California) on the slope of a mountain chain -- name of the mountains/nearby locations? Thoughts?
Hmm. The "Elderpine Forest" would make a lot of sense as an 'old-growth' redwood forest, but it doesn't visibly border any mountains (unless you invent some). You could decide that the forest on the map covers the mountains so thickly that they're not visible as a rocky mass from above).
Here's the gazetteer entry:
Elderpine Forest – This primeval forest harbors countless secrets of the ancient world in the shadows of her boughs, and while civilization has steadily encroached on her boundaries, modern humans have never explored the heart of her darkest woodlands. Only the oldest elves of Tymbristyne can truly say what lies in the shadowy places, and they don’t speak of their ancient past.
And the one for Deepwatch, a town here:
Deepwatch, Town of* - Deepwatch originated as a small farming and fishing village called “Deepwaters”, located along a well-traveled road through the Elderpine Forest. The dark but bountiful lake attracted fishermen, ancient rune-stones enticed sages, and the natural seclusion of the place appealed to monks and outcasts alike, but the town’s destiny wasn’t made clear until some colossal denizen of the bottomless lake arose and sundered the great bridge before unleashing tremendous havoc on the surrounding lands. Heroes from Tymbristyne vanquished the beast and sent it back into the watery deep, but ever since that time the renamed town has stood guard over the lake, augmented by a newly constructed keep and a garrison of bored soldiers. The beast hasn’t been seen again, but every now and then something churns the dark waters of the Shadowdeep and sets the townsfolk on edge.
Alternately, you have remote Telbin's Taiga (a "cold, dark, wet" forest) on the edge of the Bladeridge Mountains, just below the Outworld Plateau. Or the Elmwood nestled against the base of the Sentinel Mountains, north of the Fog Downs.
Elmwood, Northern – The boughs of the Elmwood, including the forests along the Fog Downs, are home to huntsmen and trappers who pride themselves on their skill at capturing live game. Independence is a strong tradition here, and the northern reach of these woods is known as a testing ground for all manner of rangers, trackers, falconers, and other woodsmen who seek the elusive Elmwood Stags.
Elmwood, Southern – The more temperate stretch of forest south of Buccaneer Bay is a lawless place that harbors all manner of scoundrels and drifters in small camps and communities. Most of the trackers found in these parts are bounty hunters, but the wisest of them keep their identities hidden. The folks who live here don’t generally want to be found.
You could also use the Feywood, which lies next to the Darkfathom Mountains (really one long broken spur of rock leading up to Darkfathom Peak).
Feywood – The sprites, fairies, sylphs, and other fey that give this forest its name tend to coexist peacefully with the gnomish settlements of the region, but they love to punish the “trespassers” from Subricon and other places that come here to harvest their special trees.
If you use the Feywood, you also have Gypsum nearby:
Gypsum – Gypsum is an independent mining town founded and still governed by a clan of gnomish prospectors. The rumored discovery of rare minerals in the wooded hills created a bustling economy almost overnight as dwarven miners, halfling trade barons, and even a handful of elves and humans descended on the site with hopes of sharing the wealth. The gnomes carefully regulate claims and settle disputes, turning a fair profit as barristers, inspectors, and landlords while letting others do the heavy digging. It’s a profitable arrangement for them, since they also claim a tithe of any gems unearthed in the region.
This is probably too much information, but I hope it helps. :)

Do you have a secret website we can drool over?
Personally, I think you should start your own website with digital maps for sale. I would buy them in a heart beat and I bet many more here would too. I suggest digital because less overhead and allows users to print them at whatever size they need.
I must admit you have inspired me to work on my own map making skills. I have come a long way, but am no where close to you and I am sure never will be.

Thanks guys!
Bad dates, I'm glad you found the info useful. Here are the entries I wrote for the Sentinel Mountains and the High Aeries, in case they're helpful--but remember that I don't plan to develop this land any further; feel free to change or disregard the suggestions if you have other ideas. :)
Sentinel Mountains – This tall mountain chain takes its name from the activities of the Cloudwardens, who maintain a set of mountaintop strongholds here. Though these protectors can’t be everywhere at once, their vigilance makes the Sentinel Mountains much more secure than most wilderness areas, as a general rule.
High Aeries – The set of mountaintop strongholds collectively referred to as the High Aeries are home to a world-spanning brotherhood of human and elven griffon riders who, along with their avariel allies, see themselves as preservers of nature and defenders of freedom. The Cloudwardens oppose tyranny in general, but take a particular interest in the activities of chromatic dragons.
Krome, my website is woefully (read: a couple of years) outdated, so I don't recommend visiting it now, but I do plan to revitalize it in the coming weeks and share a lot of new stuff there. I'll post about it when that happens.
I've been working on the GameMastery Modules for some time now, and the first five of them feature my work. The art director wants to give other cartographers a chance to work on some of those, but it sounds like Paizo will still be sending a few module projects my way in the months ahead.
I've also been doing a lot of Star Wars projects for Wizards of the Coast lately, and I did some WWII-themed maps for an Axis & Allies miniatures game accessory recently. They have also asked me to create new Maps of Mystery for the online continuation of Dungeon. We're still working out the details, but I think it's safe to say that the Maps of Mystery will continue. I have a hunch they'll also be asking me to do some adventure maps for Dungeon, but we'll see what happens.
Lastly, I do have plans to begin working on a series of my own maps that I can publish, along with related written material, on a yearly basis. If that goes well, I'm hoping to get a volume out in time for Gen Con next year. If the production of that stuff goes *really* well and I feel particularly ambitious, I might try to create the content in monthly installments and make it available as PDFs.
All of the above will involve a lot of work and a tighter production schedule than what I'm used to, but I welcome the change and I think it will turn out very well for all concerned. I know I'm very excited about the future, and I can't wait to get started.

Chris, I hope you don't take offense to what I'm about to write, but I just thought I'd share some of my own thoughts on what direction I might go with the Lands of Mystery.
I see this world as one that was originally Fey-dominated. The Seelie and Unseelie courts existed, and had fought in the past, but eventually settled into a kind of “Cold War” situation. Elves, gnomes, and halflings were on the side of the Seelie court. Orcs and the goblin-kin were allied with the Unseelie court.
Into this mix came humans, lead by “The Three Wandering Gods”:
Prometheus - A former Titan, creator of, and friend to humanity. He led his followers from their world when another god tried to wipe out humanity with a great flood. Since arrival in the LoM he has assumed the mantle of divinity himself.
Woden the Blind - barely having survived an apocalyptic battle (and having lost his other eye, his wolves, his horse, and one of his ravens), this god and some of his followers escaped with the aid of dwarven allies.
These two gods would be joined by a third. I haven’t thought of whom yet, but maybe will go with a Slavic/Germanic deity, or perhaps an Oriental one. Together, the three would lead their respective followers to the LoM and settle there.
This “intrusion”, of course, would set off a major war, possibly instigated by an Elder Evil type primal deity. The war would eventually end with the Three Wandering Gods and their folks allying with the Seelie court to defeat the Unseelie court and its allies.
Now it would be centuries later. There are more gods worshipped by humans, most notably a daughter of Prometheus and perhaps Titania, whom humans worship as the goddess of agriculture. Maybe a few elevated demigods, and some interlopers in the form of demon princes and archdukes.
I plan on setting the recent DD series (Barrow of the Forgotten King, The Sinister Spire, and Fortress of the Yuan-ti) in this world. I hope to run my group through those three adventures as an intro to the LoM.
I was also considering making this world the setting for Expedition to Castle Ravenloft. The Knights of the Raven would be an order started by followers of Woden, and taking as their symbol his remaining Raven.
Anyway, these are just some of my thoughts.
