We're pleased to announce volumes 7–9 of Pathfinder, which launch the new Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path. This campaign begins in Korvosa, and plunges the characters into a time of turmoil and doubt—the King is dead, and civil unrest is nearing a boiling point. The Queen needs hearty souls to bring the largest city in Varisia back from the edge of anarchy—are your PCs up to the task? These volumes include:
- Pathfinder #7—Curse of the Crimson Throne Chapter 1: "Edge of Anarchy" (February), featuring an adventure by Nicolas Logue
- Pathfinder #8—Curse of the Crimson Throne Chapter 2: "Seven Days to the Grave" (March), featuring an adventure by F. Wesley Schneider
- Pathfinder #9—Curse of the Crimson Throne Chapter 3: "Escape from Old Korvosa" (April), featuring an adventure by Richard Pett
Note that these covers are mockups; the final artwork will differ substantially.

I noticed that Pathfinder #7 mentions the beastiary will contain new urban monsters and Pathfinder #8 will have new monsters assciated with death and disease. Are these monsters already submitted/created? Or does this represent a couple of categories in which freelancers might be able to send monster submissions for publication in Pathfinder?

As with most Pathfinders, the majority of the monsters in the bestiary will be created by that book's adventure writer. In some cases, an adventure author makes up 6 or 7 or even 9 new monsters, in which case we're set. In other cases, an author only makes up 2 or 3 new monsters, leaving us with 3 or 4 new monster slots to fill. For now, we've been filling those slots with ones we make up in house or that we solicit from our existing pool of freelancers. In these cases, the monsters may or may not fit in with that adventrue's theme.
When we open up Pathfinder for submitted monsters, it's probably a good idea to focus mostly on just making cool new monsters. There may or may not be open slots for Pathfinder #8, after all, for example—we won't know until we have that adventure in house, which won't happen for months and months. If there ARE availalbe slots, there won't be many, so trying to build a monster that fits into that area kind of limits your chances, really. We'll already have most/all of the plague-themed monsters we want for that issue, and adding more would probably feel like overkill—in this case, we'd rather include monsters that are more useful in all game situations.
In any case, we're still not sure how we'll be handling submissions anyway. Once we get that process nailed down, we'll be making posts all over these boards, I suspect.
Oh, and this AP will probably cover levels 1–15. Could go higher or lower. We're still working out those gory details.

Wow, awesome to see that you guys have so much confidence in Pathfinder, already announcing the next path before this one even began!
It's part confidence, part necessity. Adventure Paths are difficult to create, and generally need about 8 months to a year of lead time before the first in the cycle sees print. Since we're doing 6-month campaings... it's just the way the math works out.

I was going to make a joke about editors and math, but then I vaguely recall you like stating up monsters, don't you? Kind of ruins the joke.

It's cool that Pett appears to have used the film "Escape from New York" as the inspiration for his part of this path....
That would actually be my doing...
But yeah... Escape from New York did indeed serve as the initial plot inspiration for "Escape from Old Korvosa," although there's certainly a lot different going on in the adventure than in that movie.

Oh, let's not be coy, Mike. Much against Rich, much against him. Like he's even seen Escape From New York...he's probably seen some cheesy British remake Escape from Derbyshire...ugh.

Oh heck yeah! Escape from Derbyshire is da bomb! There was that one scene, when it was 3:59 and the tea wasn't ready yet. That was so stressful!
The main character totally got the tea served at precisely 4:00, thank God, but he forgot the crumpets! >_>

I like the iconics on the prospective covers, as well. (Who says you can't have a dwarf on a cover?) I'm gonna see if my brother wants to run this one, as I'm gonna be running RotR when it comes out, [i]after[/] Savage Tide...me is a busy GM.
Of course... that's not the real cover with the dwarf on it; it's just a mock up cover. The real cover's still months from being done.

I'm very excited that the next adventure path will be urban, taking place in a big city like Korvosa.
One request though. The maps of Sasserine and Magnimar were fantastic, but it has always bothered me just a little that the cities just stop at the wall. Inside, dense and bustling; outside, empty, green fields. It seems to me that a real, thriving city ought to be literally spilling out the gates, especially a city as big and important as Korvosa. When you do the big map of Korvosa, please consider putting some of the town outside the walls.
Here are links to a couple of really nice examples of what I'm talking about from the Maldin's Greyhawk site:
Thanks

Poor Wes. He's surrounded by Logue and Pett. ;)
I like urban adventures, so this AP ought to be right up my alley from what I've read so far.
Yeah, tell me about it. I'm wedged in there to give James a break. It's hard to develop those two's work, Rich because his thick accent translates into text and Nick because every other word is a cuss (and our computers censor those out to protect our delicate sensibilities).
As for my adventure... hope you all are up on your vaccinations. ^_~

I agree 110%. I guarantee Korvosa will ooze out beyond its walls.

I just hope for some roof elements.... like something a rogue would excel in...
I want to see a campaign where somebody is getting away jumping from rooftop to rooftop! I WANT TO USE MY JUMP SKILL :(
I just saw bourne ultimatum today... thats a PERFECT example of jumping from rooftop to rooftop and through open windows into adjacent buildings and such >.>

Hey Everyone - sorry I've been away for a while - why didn't anyone pay the ransom?
'Escape from Derbyshire' - stop Nick - my sides! My inspiration for this adventure is imagining Nick, Greg, Steve, and Wolfgang being stalked in the streets by multiple horrible somethings or maybe a plethora of unnatural unthings - and I'm going to be giving them a very horrible time indeed.
Hey hang on - aren't you escaping to new york nick - will that mean that everyone else will be trying to escape m'nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnar!
Good to be back chappies.

I almost said the same thing when I read his post, but couldn't recall the exact name of the film at the moment. I'll 2nd the suggestion :)

Aw.. shucks! Thanks guys! Glad you like my work. Unfortunately, 'tis true... its tough to find time to work on all the zillions of projects I've got going (many non-RPG related). The last Irongate material to go up on my website (I would have linked to the Dock Quarter map, and not that embarassingly rough sketch map I whipped up in a couple of hours) was a complete revamping and expansion of the Irongate pages on my website in late February/ early March, to expand upon my article that appeared in Dragon 351. If you haven't been by my website since before then, do check them out. There are some neat new regional maps there now. Check my Site History/ Site Map page to find out what's new (and see what other stuff is on my website that you may have missed... the City of Melkot material has actually been up for quite a while, but the site is getting big enough that you might miss stuff just following links, so use the Site Map).
Erik has always been a huge supporter of my material... he's the guy who went to WotC and demanded (or at least thats the way I picture him saying) "I want this map for my new Living Greyhawk Journal" when I showed him the preliminary City of Greyhawk map back then (originally meant for my website as a high-resolution download), and made the poster map possible (as well as our continuing series of CoG articles)... and most recently, he's the guy who invited Gary and I to write the Irongate article.
I do know, however, that for publishing product these days, people may like to see (maybe expect to see) arty-looking maps, and perhaps not the more functional style I use in my designs. I've told Erik that I'd love to work with his artists to design great maps, so who knows. I'd love to work with Chris West or Rob Lazzaretti on team-produced maps. To get an idea of what is possible, one will only have to look at the new City of Greyhawk map within the soon-to-be-unleashed Expedition to Greyhawk Ruins (there's a copy of the map in the LG EtGR Sourcebook) (link to the Sourcebook zip-file) to see what an arted-up (yet precisely traced, down to every last shack, fence, and tree) version of my City of Greyhawk design looks like. I'm not certain who arted-me-up, but it looks like Rob's style.
Anyways... Erik knows how to get a hold of me.

Edit: p.s. for Kruelaid... I've got a multi-authored page almost ready to go up on the hobloggers, and I'll try to get more of the Irongate map done this summer! Also, building a new section on Greyhawk's Underdark. Stay tuned. :-)

Please don't mention wanting to work on compilation projects with people like Chris. I almost wet myself. ;-\. As it is I could drool over your maps for hours!
Oh, and I'm looking forward to Pathfinder 7-9 as well (I'll have to bug my local hobby store to get them in).
And will all the wonderful authors at Paizo not excel at monster design and please have some monster design blocks. Otherwise, I'll have to pitch my monsters to WotC. ;-)

Book trade solicitation schedules require that we actually announce products through August, which means you'll hear about Pathfinder 13 too—which means we'll be talking about the *third* Adventure Path already...

lol; I really dont understand these teasers; didnt we all just get number two? I could understand teasers about #3 or #4, but I dont understand the goal of teasers #7-9 as they are half a year away from delivery.
I think they mentioned in the #pathfinder chat that the book trade has 18-month lead times or something crazy like that so they pretty much have to announce things that far in advance.

When announcing upcomming summer realeases, they'll have to give informations up to August 08, which should be the first month of AP#3 (PF#13). So they need to plan that long ahead of time and already have an idea of what AP#3 will be about.
I also see a great interest in knowing what is comming, even a year ahead. Many (including me) were intrigued by Riddleport and the Underdark of Golarion, and were asking to know more about it. So news of AP#3 was great news in both subjects :)
