I haven't had the chance to play one but I been REALLY itching to play a beguiler for a while.
of core classes.... i love fighter IF stuff like PHB2 is allowed because the fighter feats in there make taking more levels in fighter a good looking choice for once. Sorcerous are my favorite casters and rogues are just cool.
back to non-core. I wanna try an incarnate too. I keep hearing about these classes in the dragon compendium, I should pick that up and look through it, wonder what the jester is all about!
scout looks like a fun class to try out. so do ninjas.
we need a pirate base class >_<

While I think alot of the non core classes are cool, I'd have to go with the Scout as well. Skirmish, good skill points, skill selection and versatility make it appealing to me. A close second would be the Factotum.
I'm not too impressed with the skirmish ability. Unless you invest in the feats, dodge, mobility and spring attack, you only gain the skirmish damage bonus, at most, every other round. A rogue just needs to flank another opponent to gain that sneak attack bonus.
I think.Any way thats how we've been playing it.
Maybe some one with experience playing or Dming a scout can tell us how it skirmish really plays out.

Ninja, hands down.
But I tend to like verstatile skill loaded, finessing, mobile characters.
The fact its Ki is so versatile, makes it that much more appealing. Especially since the Dragon Mag with the Karmic Healing feat.
I played a cleric/ninja in a two-player-one-DM one shot once, it rocked. Haven't had the chance to play one since it then. I can't wait to try a whisper gnome ninja.
Other non-core base classes that rank high in my opinion:
Warmage -- for blasting and nothing else
Warlock -- for self-preservation and personal versatility
Dragon Shaman -- Breath Weapon, 'nuff said

I love the Knight the most by far, but Swashbuckler is a close second.
Incarnum is fun, but it's a lot of paperwork and you really need the book on hand at all times.
Warlock is awesome for new players who want to play arcane but you don't feel like teaching them Vancian magic and don't have an extra PHB for them to keep looking up spells. It's like the 'remedial sorcerer'
Dragon Shamans are cool, but I'm not a big fan of Dragons (though it could be I've just never played in a campaign that focused on them in a really awesome way)

Our group allows Skirmish to tag along onto Eldritch Blast - and since I'm normally the DM, well, I see no problem with it as a DM. ;) (that's the way I want it to work for *my* PCs, so that's teh way it works for *every* Warlock/Scout combo)
As for making a 10' step, check A&EG's list of Wondrous Items for Sparring Dummy of the Master. The DM for my Warlock//Scout hasn't let me find one of those yet... That's the only way *we* know of increasing a 5' step to a 10' step.
Why would Skirmish only get applied every other round? I mean, I may be flat out missing something here, but 10' = Move Action, stop and fire longbow = Attack Action. Can't you do that every round?
And yes, a Scout is (as far as *I* can determine) stronger as a ranged-attacker build than a melee build.

I think the "every other round" refers to the occasional scout that uses melee weapons. One round, you run up, attack with skirmish. Next round you attack and retreat. Rinse, repeat. That's the only problem I have with Scouts... it's a lot easier to skirmish with ranged than melee. TBH, I actually consider the scout a little overpowered, what with the improved init, speed boosts, skirmish adding damage AND AC... *shrug*
My favorite base class I've played would probably be Beguiler. Arcane trickster on steroids (no fireballs tho).

Spring Attack solves this problem easily and, before that, you can always just Tumble around an enemy before making each attack. A Scout with Spring Attack moving into the Tempest PrC would be disgusting since the Tempest allows you to make two attacks (one with each hand) at the end of a Spring Attack. Oooooooh....
