Yep, Backyardigans is good stuff. Ranks right up there with Piggly Winks for me...

For Spellcasters with '0' level spells, the spellcaster gets bonus '0' level spells equal to the modifier on the key ability for spells.

For example, a wizard with an Int. of 16 will get 3 bonus '0' level spells.

So, I take it we are now going to do this?

I'd like confirmation for this as well, as that would add a few spells to my repertoire...

Got to love those moments when you find yourself singing the songs from the cartoons and the kids are not even around.

Glad you could roll with this! I've found most DM's go with the 0 hp = dead monster approach--it does indeed make things easier for bookkeeping, no need to forc players into slashing throats ensuring everyone's dead, etc. However, I always disliked when you really need to keep a creature alive and the DM doesn't allow it...

No trouble what so ever. I love creativity. Especially in a PbP, where action kind of takes a back seat.

Hey everyone,

I am feeling that my running of this game may be a bit disorganized. I will have to admit that my mother is sick and my mind is not fully on the game at the moment.

That said, another probable reason is that we have many players.

So I have been thinking of this:

Much of the beginning of this game will be focused, at least this is my current plan, in a wilderness setting. So my thought is to have players, when they post, provide skill checks in Spot, Listen, Hide, Move Silently, & Search just in case one or more is relevant. Also feel free to provide other rolls, if you feel that this is necessary. Also, if you roll well and it is not used, I will bank it for later use.

If this seems too cumbersome, and you don't feel it necessary to provide a roll, that's cool. To keep things going, though, I may roll for you, if it is something minor.

Any thoughts or suggestions.

I hope everyone is having a good time. My mother is starting to get better, and I am starting to feel more focused on the game.

Cheers

Firstly, I hope your mother gets to feeling better soon.

As for the game, I think you're doing fine, Utak. Now that the characters are all together, it should be a much easier task to keep us all moving along.

On rolling, I'm actually perfectly happy with the DM rolling anything that is reactive (e.g. we've got a chance of Spotting something even when we're not actively making Spot checks, etc.) or mundane (anything we'd reasonably just "take 10" on anyway) as this keeps the game a bit more "real" and flowing. Heck, even just assuming all valid checks are "take 10" unless specified by the player is fine. We as players can then roll such checks only when we choose to do so actively. There are several rolls I make as the DM when running my PbPs, including decipher script, disable device, disguise, forgery, spellcraft (to draw a diagram for a dimensional anchor), spot (to read lips), and use rope (to secure a grappling hook) all as directed by the PHB, but also action specific characters (or all characters) would not know about. Others might include a series of Survival checks over the span of a day to keep from getting lost, all rolled at once and in private so the DM can just describe the journey.

Basically, don't sweat rolls that are "small stuff" and just focus on the major events relevant to a scene. That should minimize work on your side as well as keep the game chugging along.

I've switched over to RPG Web Profiler for storing my character sheet. It's got a d20 3.5 DnD template that adds some nice features to the standard 3e Profiler character sheet. I've also started using it for another PbP campaign I'm running, as it's got a Campaigns section for grouping all your players' character sheets together. The character sheets are integrated with the d20srd.org web site for certain entries (like spells, abilities, skills, feats, etc.) for one-click access to the SRD. Pretty nifty stuff overall.

Just a general heads-up for folks interested in PbP tools...

My mind can now totaly focus on the game right now til I get a job. My mind was busy finishing the last Harry Potter book. So I wasn't posting as much sorry. Now I'm finish and I wish I wasn't. I'm a huge fan. Oh, well.

On second thought ...

Maybe my idea is a bit too cumbersome. I will take Erian's advice here and make mundane rolls as needed. No need to post rolls on every post, unless, of course, you want to.

Also, If I post what you feel is a bad idea, please feel free to smack me in the head. Since I am still fairly new at this, I am trying different things on a Trial-&-Error basis to see what works in a PbP.

Sorry for any annoyances I am currently causing.

Cheers

I am perfectly happy with the way that you are running this, especially as it's your first go. Also I said at the beginning you could roll my dice. Go for it.

We're gonna have to do some confidence intervention here soon, Utak! ;^)

You're doing a very good job, especially for your first time. I've been in PbP games that were bad, and they were run by "veterans" supposedly. This ain't one of them...

And my posting will be a bit suspect over the weekend, starting tonight.

I am DMing Temple of Elemental Evil for the first time in 27 years so I'm busy drawing out a moathouse. We only play once every six weeks so I have to make it good.

Sounds real cool French Wolf. I think I may have to fly over to England and join you. Have fun with it and enjoy the weekend.

Hey French, a fellow over at Dundjinni did some pretty nice ones. Here's a link if you want to check them out.

They are brilliant Erian, - been keeping an eye on his work.

Maybe when they get to the Temple, I'll organise myself enough to have some of those maps ready.

However I am old school and even the tac-tiles rarely make it to the table over the old wipemat. It's a bit dog-eared but then so am I.

Utak - you get to the UK and you're on.

I have promised to bring my wife over to America. New York is her dream to be specific, and that may be years away. There is plenty of the USA that I have never seen. One day.

Cheers to you both

isnt a rock a simple weapon? can you get more simple; why the minus 4 as I am profficient with all simple weapons? not a big deal, but like to know this stuff for future reference.

I was considering the rock as an Improvised Weapon (PH 113). Also, I was helping Lady Janas by not giving her Non-Lethal damage. I would have considered her flat-footed and unarmored by her ankle.

Valegrim wrote:

No, a rock is an Improvised Weapon, per the PHB definition of such:

SRD wrote:

Improvised Weapons

Sometimes objects not crafted to be weapons nonetheless see use in combat. Because such objects are not designed for this use, any creature that uses one in combat is considered to be nonproficient with it and takes a -4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object. To determine the size category and appropriate damage for an improvised weapon, compare its relative size and damage potential to the weapon list to find a reasonable match. An improvised weapon scores a threat on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a critical hit. An improvised thrown weapon has a range increment of 10 feet.

Utak wrote:

Ah, and Utak beat me to it. I definitely agree with the ruling.

Male Efreeti, advanced manthing 45HD

lol; so we can only throw rocks 10 feet now eh; hehe; doesnt matter, but I dont agree; throw a rock for yourself if you like hehe you can probably thumbflick one 10 ft. Will go back and reread all the rules now that I know that they are going to be so closely followed. I in no way meant this to be an attack; just wanted to get the note over there and be noticed; guess I will have to pick up some lead bullets so I an toss notes in the future :)guess i will need a sling too.

hehe this is just too funny; remember this next time you wad up some trash and throw it towards the can; your at a -4.

Oh, I didn't see it as an attack--I thought your question was well-stated and tactfull.

As for the rules, I gave up on them coinciding with common sense/reality long ago. I just let the rules be as they are and play around them, that way everybody's on common ground.

Hey don't forget about the Big Sky country here in Montana. We have great skiing for the winter and great fishing and river trips for the summer. Plus we only live an 1 1/2 hrs away from Yellowstone Park. We are planning a trip over to your "area" but we have got a trip to Mexico in November and then New York next August before we get to plan to venture to you. (Something about having kids and trying to decide to bring them or to leave them here)

Where is this statue at Erian_7??

Did not mean to stir up controversy. I realize that it was not an attack, but throwing a rock from 30 ft away, IMHO, requires at least some velocity and/or gravitational impact. It was a throw aimed at her ankle. I was just attempting to show cause & effect, and I was using the rules to save a PC from non-lethal damage.

If others also disagree or have different POV, let me know so I can learn and DM better.

Hiking and whale watching... I'm guessing you're going to Vancouver Island? If you head further inland, towards Calgary and the Rocky Mountains, let me know (I live in Calgary, and I'm really into hiking/backpacking)...

When are you planning on doing this trip?

We are taking a cruise. (East Coast)

These are our Canadian ports.

9/26 - Halifax (whale watching)
9/28 - Quebec City (This day is our 5th year Anniversary, walled city)
9/29 - La Baie (mountain hike)
10/1 - Corner Brook (casual hike)
10/2 - Syndney (possible sailing - pending)

Cheers

We are going on the Mexician Riveria cruise in November to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas. It is our honeymoon after 4 years of marriage. I was pregnant with Arwen when get got married. Yep I was a whale. We had an actual ceremony after I had the baby and Dreamweaver wore his kilt and I worn a hippy dress with no shoes. The minister teased this was the first wedding he has done where both were wearing dresses. I found it funny that only I was wearing unders!

Also on the list. My neigbor was there a year back, and they had a great time. I wish you a great time.

Also, the wedding sounds awsome. I am going to a wedding next June in Connecticut. It is my wife's friend. It is going to be a beach wedding that will simply turn into a beach kegger by nightfall. Can't wait to wear shorts and a T-shirt to a wedding.

Heh, Birmingham, Alabama has a lot more to offer than most folks think! We get pegged with the "bunch of racist red necks living barefoot in tin shacks" sterotype, but there's actually a lot of beautiful/interesting sites down here and I've actually encountered more racism outside the state than inside.

I've been to Montana (Wolfpoint, Poplar, and Brockton; basically along the Fort Peck Indian Res.) several times, however. I really liked it up there, and the elk was good eatin'!

So I guess that is a no go on the coming to visit you and sit on your porch in a rocker barefoot drinking moonshine! I am just kidding, My family came from Missouri so I do have southern respect. Actually most likely you would find more of the barefoot moonshine thing up here. After all most people think we are a part of Canada. We have had people ask if we have plumbing or not.

Now, for the daring we could go "up on the mountain" where I grew up. It's about an hour outside the city, but can definitely grant some of the benefits of rural Alabama. For the really courageous, we could trek about 2-3 hours up into the northeastern section of the state--they've still got snake-handlin', moonshine drinkin', shotgun tottin' folk up in the Appalachian Mountains there.
