Janas’ Background
It was thirty years ago when the elven lord, Paraglos Getherin, unwittingly led his family’s fall from grace. He was an ambitious mage, but his ambition and intelligence weren’t matched by his wisdom and common sense. As a noble mage and well-connected scholar, he was given the honour of reading some of the inscriptions of the Great Temple.
When he first walked the hallowed Halls, the sense of wonder and accomplishment made Paraglos feel small. Soon he was drawn to one room and its inscriptions. One in particular began Tamarasil ….
The inscription meant little at first but gradually over time he deciphered phrases such as Gate/portal of life, hidden beings to be summoned and ancient power. Well before he should have, the naïve mage began the spell of the inscription. This proved foolhardy in the extreme, and betrayed the tenets and laws by which he was allowed to enter the Great Temple. There was no one to make sure the ritual was well reported and safe. As Paraglos finished the spell, he fainted in black pain.
When the elven Lord awoke, he was lying with his wife and son, who were eyeless and cold. His bloody hands were scratched and covered in bloody eye fluid. However Paraglos felt reborn and indifferent to the deaths of his family.
He started to search the mansion for other survivors. The ritual spell had passed through every room and hall. Everywhere there was violence and death, and also murderers. Every murderer was now a creature of outward calm and inward sinful passion.
The Lord was surprised to find his daughter, Janas, had survived. She seemed to be the same as the others but then Paraglos had never been able to read her. In fact, the keepsake from her nanny, acted as a magical ward, its power now spent, the necklace now returned to normal. Meanwhile Janas kept quiet as she watched the nightmare of the Getherin Mansion unfold.
Paraglos called those left to the Main Hall and blessed their survival. He named them members of the Cult of the Blind, and ordered each to devote himself to the others. Each cultist would seek to increase the power and sway of all. Several stayed with the elven Lord but others such as his gardener, Beal Thartins, moved on. Everyone touched by the inscription of Tamarasil had gained powers of charming, enchantment and divination.
Paraglos began to entertain the other lords, merchants, judges and other dignitaries; carefully gathering in the weak willed and easily influenced, making them part of the Cult of the Blind. Janas found herself watching late night orgies and worse. The Lord Getherin began to spread his wings into blackmail and torture and soon this became murder and assassination.
Janas kept a diary of all these happenings. She learnt to dissemble and bluff her way around a variety of guests. Her childhood was spent mostly in hiding, not trusting anyone for fear of discovery.
It was twenty years ago that Janas decided to take the diary to the authorities. She eventually chose the Worship Hall of Corellon Larethian. They were overwhelmed by the information contained in the book. Investigators had to tread carefully through the corridors of power in Aidan’s Wall until all the cultists had been pinpointed.
In one night they were rounded up. However Paraglos managed to break free. He burned with anger to find out who had given him away. It didn’t take long for Paraglos to work it out whilst in hiding with his gardener.
When the moon was dark and Janas was asleep, they came for her. Paraglos and Beal spent hours torturing her. Her father didn’t leave a mark on her body but inside she was a wreck. Her bones and spirit were tested beyond endurance. Finally Janas’ mind snapped when the gardener cut off her father’s head with a scythe. The Cult didn’t allow for mistakes.
The Elven Hall took in Janas and restored her mind; her body though healed was never the same again. They also tested her loyalty and integrity for signs of demonic charm. None was found, in fact Janas’ will had become as iron.
Their only reservation was the risks she was willing to take, risks that had little or nothing to do with the interests of the Church. Janas had faced death and she wanted to live life to the full. A lady shouldn’t seek adventure at every opportunity in the Church’s eyes.
They trained her intensely to act as an agent, looking for signs of evil influences, to gather evidence and combat the dangers of magical misuse. Janas was to become a spy, out in the cold with no obvious links to her church.
Now an attractive young woman, she can assume a variety of disguises and manipulate most people into helping her.
Her first mission is to Erian’s Glen. It is a bustling new town on the edge of the wilderness. Her task is to blend in and watch. She will be approached by a contact with more information when necessary. In the event of her discovering anything important, she is to leave a note for a meet with the owner of the Oakleaf Inn.
Janas has dropped the name of Getherin and taken an obscure family name from Aidan’s Wall, Haturi. She arrives in the town in mage robes and sets about finding work.
