Erian's Glen - New PbP - 6 / 21 / 07

Gamer Connection

Hey Everyone, instead of future thread-jacks to the Hommlett PbP, this is the official thread to apply to the new Erian's Glen PbP DM'd by yours truely.

So far the players accepted are:

Nani Wahine
Dreamweaver
French Wolf

I am holding 2 slots available for:
Valegrim
Amergin

In case they show interest within the next few days.

I will also probably look for 1 to 2 more players, depending on interest.

There will be more to follow, but I wanted to establish this thread to avoid more thread-jacks.

Cheers,

Utak

Ok, to get things started, feel free to ask me questions or post among yourselves to get character concepts down. No rush in actually making characters yet. I want to get a feel on what people want to play (ie classes, races) before I establish character generation rules.

Just some general info. so far. To keep it simple, this is a generic D&D world using the D&D pantheon of dieties. We will be starting out in a somewhat rustic outpost turning large town setting called, you guessed it, Erian's Glen. The major industries are logging for ship building and mining.

Your character can be in town for many reasons:

Maybe they live there - baker's boy, innkeepers daughter.
They can be part of the guard detail.
They can be a guard just arrived with a merchant caravan.
They can be a lumberjack or miner.

You get the idea, anything will probably work. Any questions, just throw my way until I get some concrete details typed out. I really want this to be your game so please throw your ideas and character goals my way. I have plenty of ideas and hooks, but depending on your character concepts they just may not fit.

Let's have fun

Finally getting time to catch up on my Paizo time and I find a game starting up in my honor! ;)

have to throw my hat in the ring for a namesake game...

Welcome! Feel free to throw down a character concept and let me know what you are interested in playing.

At this point, I think any more interested players will be on stand-by until Monday afternoon around 5pm EST. At that point, if Valegrim and/or Amergin has not shown any interest, then I will open their spots as well. Feel free to apply though, players drop out of these games alot, and I will keep a stand-by list.

Current roster:
Nani Wahine
Dreamweaver
French Wolf
Erian_7

Spots held for:
Valegrim
Amergin

Yay, Utak starting your own game!!!

I am in enough already to keep me out of this one, but let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

Hey Dragonmann,

Thanks, you started me on this PbP journey. In a way, you are like my master. Well, ok, maybe not, but I may look to you for your guidance and wisdom.

I will hopefully get you my character concept tomarrow, same for my wife, what books can we use for classes, Core, Completes and PHBII. Does anyone have any preferress on what role they want to fill?

I basically have all of the source books, so I am currently leaving everything available. Of course, I have not read through half of my stuff so, if someone chooses something that just doesn't fit, I will let them know. But as for now, all is fair game.

Liberty's Edge

Well, the best advise I have is don't get flustered. Unlike tabletop where you are pressed for time, and have people staring at you when you forget how grappling works and you need to look it up, in PbP you can simply not post for an extra hour while you sort it out.

Second to that is don't rush things. Set pieces work better in PbP then they do in tabletop, you can build a scene, and let the players explore it. The less combat the better, because combat involves i-go-you-go-they-go which is anathema to message board play. Then again, you are on the BOAT RIDE FROM KHYBER(tm), so you know what can happen when players are let loose for a while in a set piece...

Liberty's Edge

Good advice there from Dragonmann.

Excellent luck with your game Utak!

Thanks for your advice and good wishes.

The Exchange

I am happy to play anything, however being the charismatic rogue or sorcerer would make a nice change from the divine spellcasters I favour. Especially the rogue which I've rarely played.

Utak - my initial idea is that my PC will come into Erian as a guard seeking his fortune.

Your email address would be useful for private chats with the DM. Then the players can flesh out background surprises for the future.

Good idea. My wife and I have house rabbits so our e-mail address is bunnies@ptd.net.

Yes indeed - best of luck.

Thanks for your kind words.

Paizo truely does feel like a home away from home. Interesting, I am sitting at home. Hmmmmm, I hope I don't have to pay more real estate taxes.:)

First off, I meant to have some details of the setting posted yesterday, but we had a pet death, so I spent most of the night with my wife.

The plan today is to start the discussion thread and post some detail to help you provide life to your characters. I also posted my email earlier today, so feel free to contact me in that manner with any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, and/or questions.

Just a few thoughts on character generation just incase you like to crunch numbers like I do:

- For now, at least, any race, any class (the setting is new and it is lacking an extensive history, this is on purpose to allow variety)

- 32 point-buy

- Max. starting gold

- 1st level, you get max. hp per RAW
- Even levels after 1st, you get max. hp
- Odd levels after 1st, you can take the average hp or roll hp

- *Important Rule* No evil characters. I am hoping for a heroic campaign, but I can deal with neutrality, if that is your preference.

- Gather Information, Search, Spot are class skills for all. To balance this out, if the class you choose has one of these skills as a class skill, add 2 addt. skill points per class / per level.
For example: (The rogue has all three skills as class skills, therefore; a rogue would get an addt. 6 skill points per level).

- Depending on how much detailed character background the DM is provided, the character may get a bonus feat of the DM's choosing.

- Possible XP for character background.

- With a PbP, roleplaying is important, and XP will be rewarded for good roleplaying, posting consistency, & posting content.

Thanks and Happy Generating,

Utak

Another quick thought,

1/2 orcs do not exist. To replace this fine race, there is the Katu. Same stats, they share an ancestry with orcs, but they are their own race.

I'm leaning toward a Ranger right now. What are typical "enemies" in the area that would make sense for Favored Enemy?

Liberty's Edge

Right now I think that I will be going for an Elf but since this is my first time I am relying on my husband to help me figure things out. We will be out of town for the weekend so you probably won't here anything from us until we get back on Sunday, that is if Dreamweaver is not gaming at work today:)

Hopefully later today I will be describing the setting to give everyone more of a feel for the world. Right now the characters' 'known world' is very limited. The setting I have mapped out is a small area about the size of California, give or take, and civilization is fairly young in its development. It has been untouched by outsiders, if there are outsiders, by mountains and an ocean. Currently the main threats are goblinoids (goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears) with a few ogres thrown in. Currently, the orc is unknown in these lands. Of course, there are all of the pc races. I am also including many of the Eberron races. Warforged are called Guardians, though. More on this later.

Glad to meet you. I very much enjoy playing with your husband in the other games. No rush on characters. Its the summer, enjoy the weather and the weekend. Also, I am still fine tuning the setting. I had alot in my head, but until about 3 days ago, nothing was on paper. I put a little question in the other thread, and before I knew it, I had 4 interested players. Well, I have been meaning to put this on paper for awhile. Now I have a reason. Again, look forward to a post later on that will describe the setting and hopefull answer some questions. Again, feel free to post here or email me with any specifics.

Cheers,

Utak

Thanks Utak--I'll probably lean toward goblinoids then. I'm thinking on ways to make an "un-rangery" ranger and trying to also not rip off Aragorn (again...my favorite character since I read LotR decades ago).

Your welcome. Sorry about the lack of current options for a favored enemy. The setting wrote itself that way. I could not control it. It is like a character in a novel or a real-life child, give it life and it starts living and telling you want it wants to do. But look at it this way, you will probably run into some goblinoids. Oh, and please do rip off Aragorn. He is such a cool character in fantasy literature.

I'll probably end up playing an Aragorn no matter how hard I try, or a Tanis...

Goglinoids is a fine 1st level FE--diverse monster choice, usually good through 3rd level at least, etc. I'm not looking for anything snazy, just didn't want to go with something like lizardfolk if none are within a hundred miles!

What are you're feelings on class tweaking? This guy's not coming together as very magical in my head right now, so dropping those aspects and going a bit more martial fits better. I could do it with a mix of fighter/ranger, perhaps, or Scout, but the former cuts into the nifty Ranger abilities later on and the later is more hit-and-run/stealthy than I'm thinking. Specifically, I'd be interested in dropping the Animal Companion entirely, along with spell-casting. Pick up a few bonus feats here and there instead (not as many as the Fighter, so maybe every 4-5 levels, haven't really thought on the game balance piece yet; feats would probably be from a pool as well like Fighter Bonus feats), and allow Ranger BAB to count as a Fighter when considering feats like Weapon Specialization.

Of course, all that would only matter if the game got into the 4th-5th level range, which can take a while on PbP!

I always loved the idea of a very martial ranger. If and when the characters make it to 4th level, I will definately work with you. You'll find I'm pretty easy. If you want, feel free to jot down some suggestions and together we can come up with what your looking to do.

Hey there so I need a little info as to what RAW stands for? Also working on the concept of Elven Druid.

Nani Wahine wrote:

RAW just stands for the 'Rules as Written' per the Player's Handbook. Sorry about that. Basically at first level, you get max hit points. An Elven Druid will be cool. Actually, in Erian's Glen there is a Druids' Circle. More on this later, but there is a special group that is called 'GoldLeaf' named after the GoldLeaf oaktrees prominent in the area. This group is separated into two groups: GoldLeaf Druids & GoldLeaf Rangers. At 1st level you will not be able to become a member. This will be a prestige class that, I humbly admit, I have not written yet. Probably by 3rd or 4th level this will be attainable, if you are interested.

Oh, and I meant to mention this earlier, don't let yourself get overwhelmed. Being new to the game can get frustrating. Just take it one step at a time, and always feel free to ask a question. If it makes you feel better, this will be my first PbP that I am running.

Cheers,

Utak

Ok, I just wasted about an hour trying to use my scanner to create an Adobe pdf. I wanted to create a pdf of the map of the land and of Erian's Glen to give you all a visual. The best I could do was scan it into Kodak EasyShare. From this, I could e-mail you all a picture. Do any of you have this or a comptatible program. If so, and you feel comfortable giving me your email address, just send me a quick 'yo' email so I can register your email in my address book and send you info.

Or even better, if you are familiar with the program, and you know how to get it into a more user-friendly format, I am all ears.

Cheers,

Utak

Sounds good on the ranger. I'll get some ideas your way.

And for the new folks (whether to PbP DMing or playing) I'm always ready to help as well. Been doing PbP for probably 5-6 years now, and playing since '84. So, feel free to ask anytime you have questions.

For that map, shoot me the file (erian.7 at gmail.com) and I'll take care of it for you. I've done things like this, this, this, and this...

Best Man tomorrow - so the weather and weekend will definitely get in the way of this...

However I have crunched with heroforge 5.0.8 and the results aren't making me warm and cuddly. I'll try again Sunday and hope for inspiration in the interim.

By the way Nani - this is my first pbp too. I guessed at RAW and got lucky.

The elvish theme is drawing me in. I like the shamanic stuff too. In 3.0 a shaman made a WIS roll for his spells and failure would annoy the spirits. Spells could be arcane or divine, a mixture dependent on the spirits involved and what the DM and player agreed.

Superstitions were common, so the roleplay was a lot of fun.

The 3.5 version is more structured and limited in comparison.

What do you think Utak.

The shaman sounds interesting. What source is it in so I can read up on it? Oh, and have fun at the wedding.

Wow, you do really nice work. I will have to warn you, the map is in pencil, and it is a mess. You will probably need help deciphering my scribble also. I started out with a simple map, a few places and towns, then BAM it came to life and places were calling to me. They were saying, "Hey put me there, call me Sibley. I am a wonderful little town."

Ok, sorry about that. Just me being silly. I will scan the map and e-mail it to you. Thank you for your assistance.

Almost forgot,

Another thing about character generation. We will be using 'action points' per the Eberron CS.

I was thinking on a Knight with a tank build, od we have five people or just four?

Dreamweaver wrote:

Sounds good. If you are thinking of a Knight, you would have trained at Aidans Wall and probably grew up there. Aidens Wall is the capital city of Rutania. Rutania is the country where we start our adventure.

This city is a Republic Theocracy, if that makes sense. The city is run by the clergy of men and women that form the Holy Senate , but the people have voting priviledges to elect these senators. Each deity is represented by one senator.

A knight's main roles are too spread the will of his/her deity, protect his/her senator, and at all costs, protect the Holy City of Cein. More on all of this later.

We currently have 4 players with 2 in limbo from the Hommlet PbP, but if you have someone in mind, I will gladly accept him or her.

Utak

Here is the Discussion Thread

Hello! I just skimmed through to thread and I'm glad that there's a spot held for me. I'd be very interested in another pbp game considering the last one puttered out.

I'm going to read all the posts end for end soon, but I just wanted to let everyone know I'm down.

Welcome! Glad to have you. When you decide on a character concept, give me a shout out. I will then try to give you some ideas about character background. Also, any questions please throw them at me.
