"Then i will take the last watch."
Lucien was already taking this watch, but you are welcome to join him.
Wulf, there will be more sleep to go around if there are 4 watches, not 3. I suggest that you take the third. The only reason I am allowing Lucien and Arik to double up is that they both need the maximum amount of sleep.

Well, that's fine with me, and I don't mind that plan from a player standpoint. But as far as Wulf's concerned, ain't no way in hell he's gonna let his guard down around a thief he barely knows. As far as he's concerned, he's as liable to have his throat cut out as he is to lose his gear.
Obviously, out of character, I know I've got nothing to fear from my own party, but he doesn't.
Either way, whatever's best for the game works for me.

Arik when sleeping holds on to his rapier, if something attacks them or anything else happens.

After tending to his horse, Davos sits down in a rock to take the first watch.
Spot check: roll 3 + 3 WIS = 6; Listen Check: roll 5 + 3 WIS = 8; I really hope nobody attacks, because apparently I'm starring at the fire.
You see nothing. The night is peaceful on your watch.
Dantis Aern |
When it comes around to my watch I rise from my bedroll and ready my bow before sitting down in near the campfire. I stay alert, looking and listening for anything that might be dangerous to our group. my hearing is very acute but, not having terribly good vision at night I don't see much.
Listen 27 (natural 20+7) Spot 12 (7+5).

OK, to speed this up; nothing happens on anyone's watch. In the morning, you all are awakened by the sun's rising, giving the surrounding terrain a green-golden glow. As you rub the sleep from your eyes, you notice a number of people standing around you, and some surrounding the dead owlbear About how far away are you camped from it? They are armed with spears, and some carry bows. They are clearly dressed in the style of the Jotnir.

Sense motive 4+3=7 Arik waking up surprised "Good morning...ummmm Jotnir." Arik stands up, "Why are you here this morning, for some food?" Arik looks at their faces, but can seem to read the message they are trying to give.
Dantis Aern |
Having many years experience dealing with the toughs on the streets of the city I grew up in I see that they are more cautious than threatening. "What are you seeking here? If you are seeking food from the owlbear's flesh than help yourselves." I attempt to appear non-threatening but my hands remain near enough to my weapons that should the Jotnir become hostile I could reach them quickly.
Sense Motive 16 (11+5)
Wulfdayn Gart'th |
Wulf rises from his slumber in as nonthreatening manner as he can, never taking his eyes off as many of the strangers as he can possibly keep in view. He is wary of the Jotnir, as he is of any stranger, but common relations would otherwise imply he has at least a little less to fear than his comrades.
He says nothing, deciding that Arik would be a better man to do the talking anyway. He stays cautiously close to his weapon, which lays on the ground parallel to his bedroll, so that it would take only a small amount of time to snatch it up. He does not reach for it just yet, however, as he does not want to provoke the strangers into doing something foolish.
DM Dirk Gently |
The tribesmen adress you, Dantis, saying "We seek no sustinance from this creature. We have, in fact been tracking this creature, it has ravaged several of our scouting parties and nearby villages recently, and we saught to destroy it. It is not a natural crature, and several others of its kind have been sighted for many generations.
Who are you, who have killed this beast? Be warned, if you are not here as friends of the Jotnir people or its allies, you will not be shown much mercy."

"I am a friend of the Jotnir tribes, as are my traveling companions. We are those who have slain the beast. I am Lucien Naiilo. What name is it that I should know you by?"

Arik looks at Wulf and nods toward Lucain trying to let him know that Lucain has this covered

The tribesman turns now to you, Lucien, confused a bit on who the leader here would be, Dantis having spoken most forcefully before. "I am known as Yannu, son of the Jotnir tribe of Yakkar. If you are not enemies, what purpose have you in our lands?"

Hathir do not come from Arcania. They come from the southern continent. But I know what you mean... sort of. It would be better if you claimed to be traders. That's not uncommon.

nevermind, hey at least i tried and Hathir hahaha :)
Wulfdayn Gart'th |
Wulfdayn sighs and shakes his head, and steps into the forefront.
These louts are getting us nowhere fast! he thinks to himself. Never send a foreigner to do a Hathir's job.
A bit of arrogant self-suredness swelling in his mind, he approaches the apparent leader with caution, and offers him sweeping and respectful bow that one usually reserves for visiting dignitaries of other tribes. He has little personal experience with Jotnir, but he knows that their customs do not always differ overmuch. He decides to take a gamble, using what he considers common ground as a tool for leverage. He does his best to mimic the way his tribal elders speak when addressing other elders, or people of import.
"Noble Yannu of the Jotnir, I am Wulfdayn Gart'th and as a Sworn Son of the Hathir, I greet you. I assure you that we mean you no disrespect. My clansman and I he motions to Arik have found ourselves here as a result of our never-ending war with the thrice-damned Akkadians. We seek only a peaceful road that may lead us home, and these fellows have shown much honor in aiding us in our return. We mean you no harm, and seek only safe passage."

I say in my most convincing tone, trying to evince sympathy from them from my sorry tale. I also try to gesture in a way that shows respect and deference.

Lucien snorts with disdain, but does not answer, finding it wise not to reveal Dantis' true motives in the presence of the Hathir tribesmen.
Lucien Naiilo the Marked |
I figured that it was better than telling them that I was a theif who was adventuring with you looking for trouble and a way to escape the city where he would soon be arrested.
Good idea. And by the way, the word is 'elicit,' not 'evince.'
DM Dirk Gently |
Yannu frowns, but appears convinced of your amity. "Passage through our territory I can grant. And if you were to follow me back to our village, I could assure that same safety through all Jotnir lands." He motions in a direction you assume is the one his village lies, and begins walking, trusting you to follow. His comerades tail after him, many eyeing you warily but keeping their distance.
DM Dirk Gently |
You arrive in the village after about an hour. You people are so chatty ;) The simple huts are made of stretched hides, and seem to be capable of being dismantled and carried. The various people living here are dressed in similar hides. Yannu strides into one of the more decorated huts, leaving you five alone with his guard. Everyone about you regards you with mixed suspicion and curiosity.
Then, a few long minutes later, Yannu emerges from the hut and aproaches. "They are ready to see you now." He leads you into the hut. Inside and outside it is decorated with figures possably representing animals, people, and other strange abstract images (Arik, Wulf, and Lucien, you recognize all of these drawings as being of and to appease spirits.) There is food arranged in several bowls, some meats and vegetables arranged by bowl, on a small rug and some insence burning. At the far end of the rug is a wizened old man with a younger man on his right and an old woman on his left. All are merely sitting in prayer or meditation. What is your conduct as you enter the hut.

You are familiar with the customs: You would respectfully sit, and join their appeals and thanks to the spirits of the animals and plants who are now part of the meal on the table. You will not look up until the man in the center does so and speaks.

Davos Quaith |
Davos follow Lucien's lead as he has no idea what is going on and doesn't want to be eaten.
His mother used to tell him that if he wasn't a good boy, the savages would come and eat him. Even though, he doesn't belive these stories any more, he's never really gotten over the nightmares they've caused him.
He is alert and curious, taking in everything he can see, memorizing the details to record latter.

I'll assume that Dantis, being an intelligent and rational person, will follow your lead as well.
After a few moments the old man in the center lifts his head and begins to distribute the food I'll assume you lift your heads at this point. If you don't, tell me. As you eat I also assume you are all eating. If not, tell me. For those of you that are, the meats are salted and from the choisest parts of the animals that donated them, and the vegetables could have been harvested this morning. he begins to speak.
"You have done this area a great favor. Yannu tells me that you wish to have garuntee of safe passage through the lands of the Jotnir. We cannot do this fully, as there are some groups who consider themselves above all the other tribes. However, we can help you to survive the tribes who are friendly to us."
He motions to the woman and she produces a necklace with five talismans attached to it. DC 20 knowledge (religion) to identify the first four talismans, Arik, Wulf, and Lucien get a +5 bonus to the check The talismans include a trio of blue feathers, a string doll with long black hair, a twiggy representation of a stick figure, and a wooden black circle with a crecent on one side. The talisman in the center is recognizable to all of you, however, for it is a bronze symbol of the sword and bandolier of Calum. Same DC above to find out more about this particular case.

The holy symbol of Calum is a crossed sword and bandolier over a bronze shield. But you knew that, because you're the DM.

Ghost Woman, not Shadow Woman
The ghost woman is completely different from shadow woman. As for the symbol, I meant bandolier, and wrote bracer (correting now...Ping!), and missed the shield when looking at the symbol, sorry. Jeez.

After the "prayer" and the old man handing you the talismans (who takes those?), the young man begins to eat, and the other two follow. They share all the bowls, but eat in such a way that no one is fighting to get food out of the same bowl at once. Lucien (being knowledgeble in the customs) will probably start eating as well (sorry for taking over your character here, but it'll go faster if I just have you automatically follow the basic customs). I'll assume that everyone also begins eating (Wulf and Arik would most likely not hesitate, as this custom is more or less common to both the Jotnir and Hathinr) unless you tell me otherwise.

I gladly follow any customs I am familiar with enough to not offend someone with a misstep or accident. As for the totems, I will wait briefly to see if anyone else is reaching for them, rather than trying to jump up and snatch them for myself. If there looks to be any hesitation by the rest of the party, however, I'll take them quickly and with respect (lots of bowing and thank yous) as to not offend the Jotnir's offering.

After about a half our of eating silence, the young man whispers something in the old man's ear. Then the old man adresses you all.
"We have no spare huts for you to sleep in. We apologize that our fellow tribesmen would most likely not accept you to stay in their own. If it is to your liking, our chief has invited you to stay in his hut if you have no provisions of your own."
