I can never figure them out.
What in the heck is RAW?

Anybody else willing to show their ignorance and post acronyms they don't know?

As far as I know it's Rules As Written.

There might be some Acronyms I've yet to figure out, but I can't think of any right now.

What I do is when I see one here at Paizo, I just ask what it is, and somebody'll usually square me away. I don't feel stupid at all because I'm 38 and I'm just learning a new thieve's cant that seems to have evolved here on the internet.
But yeah, I don't always know what the acronyms mean.
I didn't know even that ;) was a sideways winking smiley faced guy for the longest time, frinstance.
I also like to make up my own, like ROFL means rolling on the floor laughing so I say stuff like ROFLAIROSDPAIN which means I'm rolling on the floor and I rolled on some dog poop and it's nasty.

Hah, I sense a new acronym sweeping its way across the dog poop covered livingrooms of America!!! LOL ;)

I can empathize. Just to clear some things up:

SRD = Sympathetic Rodeo Dramatists

BBEG= Baby Bananna-Eating Gorillas

LOL = Long Overdue Liscence

So, just keep that in mind, and I'll cyl8terbblttylporofllolwtfstfuw/e!

The Army is renown for its use of acronyms; we have an acronym for EVERYTHING, and the funny thing: very few Soldiers know what the acronyms actually stand for--we know what the item is, how it works, what it's for, and can effectively use it in a sentence, but the actual nomenclature? Additionally, we tend to verbalize the acronym, so SICPS becomes sicups (sick-ups). Since very few Soldiers know what the letters stand for (Standardized Integrated Command Post System), the spelling gets extremely bastardized: SYCCUPPS? SICUPPS?)And that's just one example. Not to mention the fact that we tend to write in ALL CAPS, which only confuses the situation more!

SRD is a great example from the RPG world: we all know it's the very basic rules of D&D or a d20 game, but the actual letters? System Reference Document. I had to look it up.

I, also, hate acronyms. TTFN.

Anybody here ever play Acrophobia on Berzerkeley? Each round you were given a random string of letters and everybody in the virtual room voted on who made the best acronym from it.

Personally I like acronyms, particularly figuring out what they mean. By the way, don't listen to Saern, thats not what any of those acronyms mean.

I've spent months trying to figure what PAIZO stands for. I think I've got everything but the Z.

I sense Olaf is about to ask if I'm being serious.

Not ever, unless it is completely unavoidable.

I'm not quite sure if you're trying to be serious or sarcastic.

I'm not a huge fan of acronyms but they have their place. I don't think anyone really wants to read 'Rules as Written' 9000 times. There comes a point where simply saying RAW makes sense to everyone but the new posters and they'll figure it out or ask soon enough.

The nature of message boards kinds of creates the need to have some phrases be shortened because they come up over and over again. The media is really all that much like a conversation but more like debate by essay or at least thesis and there can be certain phrases that just pop up over and over again. Streamlining them down into a acronym just makes sense after awhile.

The Navy is the same way. What really sucks is when they use the same acronym for different things.

Okay, I'm going to jump into the fire here, and I'm cringing as I write this as I know I'm gonna be patted on the head and sent off to play outside but...

I've played for a VERY long time but...well...um, I've seen the acronym OGL bantied about on these message boards, which I am new to, and, well, I don't know what it means.
Okay, I am ready to be laughed at. You can, at the very least, shake your head at me.

OGL is the Open Game Licence - basically, it says that everything WotC did not declare to be copyrighted can be used by other game companies - that is what the new Pathfinder is based up, for example.

Gary Teter, care to make sticky of common usage acronyms (CUAs ?) of those used on this board?

Stefan

Open Gaming License, or the d20 system as written. Anyone can use it, but I guess WoTC produces stuff thats both OGL and proprietary.

I don't think theyre that bad, IMHO.

Hah! You guys cleared that up for me, and I don't feel like an idiot, thank you so very much!

RAW - Rules as Written

BBEG - Big Bad Evil Genius (or Guy/Girl) - a main villain

IMO - in my opinion (or IMHO - in my honest opinion)

IMC - in my campaign

IIRC - if I recall correctly

Those are the ones I see around here most frequently. There are assuredly many more.

The only stupid question is the one left unasked. Unless you are Heathensson in which case it's just easier to filter out the smart ones:P(sideways dude with tongue sticking out)

I LOVED that game! So much so that I failed a coupla classes in college.

As for the acronyms... If I run into one I don't know, between Urban Dictionary and Wikipedia I can usually figure it out.

TMYK!

My problem with RAW is that every time I see it I ask myself "Why are they talking about Robert Anton Wilson in this context?"

Then I remind myself where I am, and it all comes back to me...

WTF do you mean you do not like acronyms? Oh, well. Situation normal, all FUBAR ! ~grins as I am carried out for using too much profanity~

I still recognize you.

NASA's as bad as the army, if not worse (the name ARMY itself isn't actually an acronym, to the best of my knowledge). I'm told that when someone says "Hay!" to you in the morning, they're not saying, "Hey, there." It stands for H(ow) A(re) Y(ou).

Stop, Saern.

Just..... stop.

hmm; everyone I know says IMHO is In My Humble Opinion, but there you go; confusion in acronyms. We have like a bazillion of them at work; sometimes sentences are nothing but a bunch of acronyms with a few conjunctions and articles; we actually have a book that you get when you start here with most of the common acronyms; it is all SNAFU, but then you guys are JAFO anyhow :) so there you go from SPQ to you deep within SUMCO.

Some remembers their Blue Thunder. LOL

hehe yes; but we did use JAFO in the Army and in CAP, though the O is often Operator instead of Observer.

Me and my friends use FUBAR a lot.

Actually, when I was in the Guard, I was told that US Army was an acronym for "Uncle Sam Ain't Released Me Yet."

Here's one I've never been sure of:

What does the "F" in FLGS stand for? I gather that the rest is "Local Gaming Store."

The "f" is for friendly.

What does SRD mean?

Fatespinner wrote:

"H" for "Humble" and as often as not used tongue-in-cheek, given the hubris (hmmm ... another "h" word?) of many frequent posters.

FLGS makes me laugh every time I see it. Mostly because almost every place I've lived the FLGS was like what Twain said about the Holy Roman Empire; Neither Friendly, nor Local nor a Game Store.

Thanks for explaining that, Chozen. Weird that Jason would say he hates acronyms and then use one, eh? ;)
