Any chance of regional feats...in...um...our world...?

--Neil

Oh yes! Please!!! I always loved them, wether those in the 3.0 Realms-sourcebook or those for Greyhawk from Dragon!

Or even listing some regional skills.

One thing I did for my AoW game set in Eberron, was to list a set of skill for each region that players could treat as class skills at 1st level.

For example, Characters from the Lhazzaar Principalities could treat Profession (fisher), Profession (merchant), Profession (privateer), Profession (sailor), Profession (shipwright), Profession (whaler), and Swim as class skills at 1st level.

It adds a bit of flavor to the characters.

Good! I've always been a huge fan of regional feats. Typically, when I run a Forgotten Realms game, I allow players to choose a feat from their regional list for free IN ADDITION to their normal starting feats. This way, they get some 'flavor' for their character in addition to the mechanical benefits it offers. With my PbP games, I've resorted to simply awarding a single PHB feat to each character for free based on their background information since I know not everyone has access to the FRCS to find out about their options.

The updated 3.5 feats in the Player's Guide to Faerun are freaking SWEET, though! I like how they are intentionally 'overpowered' compared to other feats but have the caveat of 'can only be taken at 1st level.' It gives characters some really unique options and abilities. My gold elf wizard in our Friday game, for example, has a feat called 'Otherworldly' which gives me 60' darkvision AND a +2 on Diplomacy checks! Sweet!!!!

Sorry for how off topic this is, but it just hit me what the name of the world that Varisia is in . . . "Our World."

It came to me when I was reading this thread and had Firefly on in the background.

I had completely missed this before, but while looking at the psionics section of the SRD I noticed that the dromites, elans, half-giants, maenads, and xephs are OGL.

While not everyone cares for psionics, these races do expand player options. The elans, maenads, and xephs are even a +0 LA.

I also wonder if some half-giants might not show up in the Rise of the Runelords AP, since they will be needing giants of all kinds.

Half ogres will be appearing in Runelords, but not half giants.

Although all the psionic stuff is open... we'll probably not be doing much with that stuff until we decide to do a psionic adventure. In particularly, I'm not that fond of the new ECL +0 races there; I'd rather come up with new psionic-friendly races, really.

Scarab Sages

Someone mentioned earlier that the Genesi (sp?) were not OGL. While that may be true, it was in response to a question about Tieflings and Aasimars, the likes of which (planetouched) I thought were OGL. They are on the d20 srd...but I don't know if that makes them OGL.

Genasi are not open, but aasmmar and tieflings are.

That said, the concept of an elemental-themed race of planetouched is certainly an option for a new type of race; we just can't call them genasi or use those exact rules.

Scarab Sages

Sounds good to me. :) I definitely would like to see new races, or certain offshoots of the current races. Of course, my favorite character creation style mechanic was in Savage Tide, with the various bonuses from being from different districts. I like that little bit of extra flavor that provides a small mechanical bonus, and look forward to seeing a similar idea in Pathfinder.

"Burn the land, 'n boil the sea..."

Huh, sounds kinda like a line from a Goblin song...

Cool. I remember the original appearance of the half-ogre. I am looking forward to seeing them.

Of the new psionic races in the EPH, I really only like the dromites (since thri-kreen are not OGL and I like the bug races for some reason).

I am happy that the half giants make the powerful build quality OGL, though I am sure it could have been worked around. Once the guidelines are finalized, I have an old PC race from back in the day that I might submit that made use of that quality.

I've always imagined them as more closely related to fey creatures myself (somewhat like Forest Gnomes are now). Anyone else like Gnomes, or am I the lonely advocate? This may sound a little odd, but I kind of like imagining gnomes as reclusive...or even "in decline"...in the manner that the elves of the Forgotten Realms are depicted. That makes them rarer. It also gives you a greater excuse to tie them to the fey realm. And, as a result, I think that makes them more "magical" (though in a different way than the magics pursued by men and elves).
This is aligned with our line of thinking as it currently stands.

You guys RULE! I pray you don't change your minds.

Genasi don't really get the feeling out for me personally. I thought Aventi made more sense as humans iwth water element to them.

And yeah, the Psionic races don't fit the flavor of psionic games at all, though I'm personally working on stuff for that that I plan on submitting ^_^
