Reciprocal gyre and potions

I want to confirm that the spell reciprocal gyre spell from the Spell Compendium targeted on a adversary that has imbibed five "buff" potions before combat would be subject to 5d12 damage as potions are a "targeted spell effect" and not "magic from an item"? Is this a correct interpretation or am I off?

I believe you're correct.

Reciprocal gyre, as written, does not react to spells or effects being currently generated by an item. I think that the litmus test for this would be: If you sundered the item the magic came from, would the magic stop? If not, then reciprocal gyre will react to it.

Hope that makes sense,

TK

And it wouldn't be 5 dice of damage unless they were all 1st level potions. Say you drank a potion of haste, mage armor, bull's strength, displacement, and false life. That's 10 spell levels of currently active effects, netting a total of 10d6 damage (Will save for half). Ouch! I love that spell. :)

Hmm, is magic from a Spell-completion or Spell-trigger Item a spell effect or magic from an item? It seems like both to me. The pure rules interpretation would depend on precisely what the wording of the spell is, and I don't have my SC here now. Pending more information, I think I'd tend toward the "Potion = Spell" camp for fluff reasons, but I don't know where I'd come down on an item that let you use (say) Ebon Eyes twice per day as a first level caster.

Interesting question.

The Spell Compendium version (the most recent printing) is 1d12 per spell. The Complete Arcane version is 1d6 per spell level.

Ah. I don't have the spell compendium. I'll stick with the Complete Arcane's rendition.

Once again, thank you folks for the input. I use the SC version in honour of the Cult of the d12, an organization seeking to integrate the d12 back into D&D society that first manifested at GC '01 with the "Adopt a d12" ad campaign.
