I actually like opera, it's just that I don't know enough about it to understand it. I have a couple of vinyl records, but none on my computer.
That's okay, I don't understand a lot of it myself, but I got this great book: Opera for Beginners, by Ron David, where he explains that it's okay to not know what's going on.
It also helps if you know a romance language. I speak Spanish, so I can often get a general idea of what they're singing in Italian opera.Mind if I ask what you have recordings of? I don't own anything on vinyl.
Here's what I'm listening to now: "A Furtive Tear" ("Una furtiva lagrima") he's singing about going into the army, but knowing he can die happy because his unattainable love shed a tear for him. Pavarotti.

I had a similar experience.
One of my friends (she's since moved to Washington, but we still keep in sporadic contact) is a HUGE Dresden Dolls fan; even going to the lengths of shaving/tattooing her eyebrows. So, I was aware of Amanda Palmer, and was mildly interested in her work, but really didn't have any sort of exposure to the music.
A few weeks back, someone told me that Amanda had a new album coming out, so I listened to some of of the Dresden Dolls songs that Marie (my friend) had given me. And I listened to them again. And again. I then logged onto amandapalmer.net, and proceeded to find the holy grail.
Next paycheck = food + new pencils + "Who Killed Amanda Palmer?"
