Today is a day for post-rock*. Specifically, Mogwai, and even more specifically, the albums Mr Beast**; Happy Songs for Happy People; Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will; and Young Team. Mr Beast is by far my favourite album of theirs. Best tracks off each album (in my opinion of course):
Mr Beast - Tie between We're No Here and Glasgow Mega-Snake
Young Team - Mogwai Fear Satan
Happy Songs for Happy People - I Know You Are But What Am I?
Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will - Haven't really listened to it enough to get clear favourites yet, but currently probably a three way tie between You're Lionel Richie, San Pedro and Too Raging to Cheers
* Yes, I am aware that it's a wanky name for the genre, and that Mogwai also dislike it, but it's one of the simplest ways to describe it to people. I used to say instrumental rock, and people assumed I was talking about extended glam rock solos and so on. I love the genre for the contrasting sounds (quiet to loud, harmonious to discord and so on), and the experimentation bands tend to embrace with their style. Another post-rock band also work checking out is God Speed You! Black Emperor.
** I love that they have a sense of humour about their naming. Mr Beast is named that because they got into an airport and saw a driver waiting for his passenger just holding up a sign with the name Mr Beast on it. You're Lionel Richie is a song title because one of them bumped into Lionel Richie and that was all he could think of to say. Glasgow Mega-Snake was their suggestion for an attraction to help bring more tourists to Glasgow. Hell, even Mogwai name wasn't meant to be their real name, they were using it as a place holder (and yes, it's a Gremlins reference) and by the time they got around to trying to think of anything else, it had stuck.

I had that one back in the day, don't think I ever heard any of the others.
I also had a track of theirs on a Matador compilation that I distinctly remember listening to, oh, a decade ago, one night, on headphones, while lying in bed [bubble bubble bubble-d]. It scared the shiznit out of me.

Pretty much all of Atreyu's first three albums (Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses; The Curse; and A Death-Grip On Yesterday) - Good example songs are Ain't Love Grand; Our Sick Story Thus Far; Ex's & Oh's; Bleeding Mascara; and Five Vicodin Chased With A Shot Of Clarity... I'd forgotten how much I love these guys. Funny how stuff just falls off of regular rotation in the playlists sometimes and you never know why.
Other bands I'm listening today include Killswitch Engage, Heaven Shall Burn, As I Lay Dying, and In Hearts Wake.

Flash back to my teenage years circa 2003...
She gave back the Def Lep shirt?!?! G*+*~*mit! I know that pain. Actually, Ive had that happen (Though it was an Ozzy shirt)...it kinda ruins the band for a while too. What can you do? The heart wants to be with another sometimes.
I do remember the Rejects song, though I didnt remember the video. Pretty cool. I was going to do a tie-in with my high school years through DefLep, but Pyromania was out when I was in 8th grade and Hysteria didnt come out until I was in college...I mean, they were a BIG band around my little podunk town. Seems like EVERYONE was issued Pyromania on cassette as they turned 14, and the band played the closest big town (Springfield) sometime during my high school years and the next day all the cool kids were wearing that Union Jack shirt. Setlist.fm doesnt have it listed though. hm.
So, I will list this one with Patricia Arquette as my flash to my high school years. I remember getting to play this song at our church youth group. Saying 'because Don is wearing a cross and in the video's story, they defeat Freddy... this makes them warriors for Christ.' (Satanic music and backmasking used to be a big argument Id have with the parental units in the day)
Watching this again, the part where George busts through the wall to shred on the guitar he called Mr Scary for 30 seconds is one of the coolest images from that time for me!
It would wither be that one or the March of the Swivelheads.
Heh, with my dad working as a record store clerk back in the years around 1980, I suspect the only way I'd have been able to rebel by music choices would be if I'd turned into a Neil Diamond fan.

That was ritually averted when I got to play on the guitar of the lead-guitarist of the Troggs back when I was three, though. Phew!
Although I'll admit to not actually remembering this happening, seeing as I was only three.

My main bands when I was a teen were Ozric Tentacles and Spiritualized. Kind of gone off the Ozrics now. Never really seems to go anywhere.
EDIT: There are some decent Neil Diamond tracks, too...

I saw them play in a church in Kingston, NY last October. They seemed like they were really high.

Common Shiner - Social Mediasochist Slasher fun!
Saw Clutch live the other night. They debuted 2 new songs from their forthcoming record, one called "The Lady of Electric Lights". A guy next to me somehow avoided detection while taping it with his phone. Got pretty much the entire song. Hope he uploads it to youtube soon, he said he would. Its a slower groove song and a nice changeup from Mob Goes Wild or Earth Rocker. I got caught up in the pit during the other new one and couldnt make out the title but it was a fastpaced tune!

Oh man I love Clutch. Was so happy I got to see them at Soundwave this year. Unfortunately Filter were on before them, and while I like Filter, I have a low tolerance for bands taking up more time than their slot allows at festivals... Particularly when the singer knows exactly what he is doing and is trying to play the crowd, telling them that the band will do two encore songs if they make enough noise and prove they're better fans than Clutch's crowd. Was pretty funny to see the rest of the band just bail on him in the middle of that crap. He turned around to start the song and they were just gone. He left quickly after that.
Clutch were, as expected, awesome.

Another version of 'Solitary Man', by the Deep Six
And Bloodstone - Riddle of the Sphinx. Was expecting it to be all Afro-Futurist spacey stuff. It isn't, but it's still pretty good. Only soul concept album I've ever come across, though I don't doubt that more exist.

I was reading on the internet that they swapped out a track to make way for "Cruisers Creek" on non-Britishiznoid pressings
