Sucks!

Anyway, here's Hewy's genre-bending mix... Hope it you dig it DB!

Los Lobos - "Rita" (happens to be my wife's name, and the lyrics describe my experience of self pretty well...)

Django Reinhardt - "I'll See You In My Dreams" (some sweet photos accompanying this one!)

The Brecker Brothers - "Song for Barry" (guitar solo is wicked - if you get that far into Fusionland)

Paul Brady - "I Am a Youth That's Inclined to Ramble" (aren't/weren't we all..?)

Jane's Addiction - "Three Days (a bit of hallucinostalgia from my formative years)

Igor Stravinsky - "Rite of Spring Pt 1" (really kicks in at 3:42... scary stuff)

Punch Brothers - "This is the Song" (this is indeed the song where I listen)

Wayne Shorter - "Speak No Evil" (.....)

Shane Howard - "Tom Wills" (a little bit of Irish-inspired Australiana, featuring yours truly!)

Selling England by the Pound, by Genesis

A good few years ago, this record so infuriated me that I took it out into the front yard and smashed it up with a hammer. In hindsight, that seems like a rather stupid thing to have done.

Acid Brass - cor.

That Brecker Brother track was ace, too :)

And, as a special treat, The Fugs on Swedish TV

EDIT: Daniel Kahn and Psoy Korolenko - Dumay!

Found that at random, and like it very much indeed.

Here's one where they're less stoned, and a lot less energetic. And it's less fun. :(

But, to make up for it, one of my favorite "Hey Joe" covers: Buckwheat Zydeco freaking rocks it.
Or live, si tu preferes.

Spoiler:
Yes, I love Zydeco music. So sue me.

Not really. I tend to like them at their jangliest, but I really haven't done my research. I got into them mainly because a bunch of bands I like (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Buzzy Girl Flynn, the Gin Blossoms, Bruce Springsteen, The Gaslight Anthem, etc.) were influenced a by them.

Nothing funky on Friday. Sorry, went to the Rock Allegiance Tour Friday where AIRBOURNE tore it up in a hard rock AC DC type fashion for a half hour. I love these guys and hope they can get longer sets on some big bills or come thru the midland on a small club headlining tour. They deserve it. They got the crowd PUMPED UP!

Then came All That Remains! This was the band I knew the least about. My nicknames show my ignorance, but 'Trucker Hat/Randy Orton' (though the singer isnt wearing his signature hat in this particular vid) and 'Vin Diesel' were great. 'Misfits' stomped major ass double pumping for an full hour. 'Super Jesus {Saruman the younger}' had some great riffs, but definitely suffers from Kerry King-itis...where solos seem to be made up on the spot and dont always mesh into the main song. But the stand out for me was 'Screamer Bass'. She has an amazing voice and though she mostly was used as a counter scream/howl to trucker hat, I hope they capitalize on her abilities and expand her role. Vin and Screamer got beers bought for them from the audience, leading to a bit of jealousy from the other members. heh.

Then came HIM. Unfortunately, the band is amazing, but the singer lacks a bit (in my opinion). The bassplayer and drummer really hold the band together, and I feel bad for them being tied to this group. They overshadow everyone else. The songs hit hard all the way up till Ville starts to sing, then they are restrained by him. Keyboard guy seemed bored and only stood up for about 3 minutes where he had to move from one set of keyboards to another. Guitar was ok...reminded me of a dreadlocked G E Smith from the SNL band in the 90s. Ive read that the band is known more for their heartagram logo than their music and I can believe it. meh. The crowd nearly booed HIM offstage. I think if they had played first in the lineup, their dreamy pop would have worked better. Coming after two hard driving rock bands and before the almighty VOLBEAT, these guys were doomed.

THEN CAME VOLBEAT! Good lord this band kicks ten kinds of ass! Theyve recruited Rob Caggiano from Anthrax, and he adds quite a bit to the band. Super interactive with the audience. Rob seems to be into this band more than he was into Anthrax. I love both bands, if this makes him happy, more power to him. Michael introduced the band as 'anthrax with three new members'. hehehe. They did bits of "South of Heaven", "Reign in Blood", "Breaking the Law", "Ring of Fire", Metallicas "I Disappear". These guys are like Children of Bodom and give you riffs of metal between other songs. LOVE IT! These guys had the audience in the palm of their hands and gave a great show! Michael wore a Jeff Hanneman tribute shirt for the encore and now I want one. Very very cool. *EDIT* I just ordered the shirt.

Volbeat has such powerful songs and stage presence, Im glad these guys are around! Cant wait to see them again.

...and congrats to littlehewy. good on ya! I couldnt ever get onstage and play anything...even if I could play an instrument. Thats awesome! Support live music!

Cross post from the Joss Whedon thread

When this one first came out, I was a little disappointed by all the slick production values, but, over the last 20 or so listens, I've changed my mind.

I've repeatedly stated a desire to watch the romantic comedy based on that B & S video.

No takers so far. :(
