That album is glorious. I've been listening on bandcamp and waiting for the next payday.

I never believed that anyone on The Sopranos would actually have listened to that song.

Drea De Matteo might have...heh. But, yeah probably not any of the wiseguys. Good god, I used to worship that show. First three seasons especially. I was watching some clips from a memorial for James G and saw the clip from where he tried to kill his mom in the nursing home after she had the hit put out on him. POWERFUL stuff. Im at work so I cant link it.

By the time I finally managed to catch him live, he was old, blind, and couldn't sing anymore -- it was a sad day for me. Keb' Mo' opened for him and, although he tried not to, stole the show. Kind of like when Suzi Tedeschi opened for Buddy Guy back in the '90s, before she and Derek Trucks started touring together.

Phoenix, a Romanian band who have (had?) at least two very good albums:

Cei Cei Ne - Au Dat Nume

And Mugur De Fluier, which I found for a quid at a car boot sale and was super excited, since I thought I'd found some sort of ultra obscure rarity. Needless to say, I hadn't, but it's still great.

Oh, drunken nomad brings the hair bands! Cinderella is awesome, Dokken even more so!

Mmm, Pet Shop Boys, It's a Sin.

Ah, Euro-pop. Duran Duran? Adam Ant? Depeche Mode? Whacky stuff.

Although, technically, that middle one isn't Europop, it's Antmusic.

Absolutely. They were cheeky sometimes, but they are absolutely fantastic songwriters, producers, arrangers, you name it.

I think it's a tragedy for the indie scene to scoff at the mainstream. I'm not pointing at you in particular, you understand, just as a general statement about some (other) music snobs. Like, if you didn't have torn jeans and play distorted guitar you weren't authentic, or you were trying too hard to be mainstream, or it isn't really art if you make money. That sort of rubbish.

I think that's one reason that I have a grudging respect for the "hipster" crowd; they like whatever is good. It's playlistism turned back on itself. You can have Britney Spears, John Fogerty, Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr., Donna Summer, and Autechre on the same playlist. And why the heck not? They're all awesome in their own right.

Not that there isn't genuine, pandering trash out there, it's just that anyone with their nose in a specific scene or style or ethos too deep can't tell s#%* from shinola in any others.

In my personal experience.

Ooh, Hungry Like the Wolf. The super-tall Sri Lankan model in that video is crazy beautiful. Her maybe being a were-leopard only adds to that. :)

I largely agree. At the same time, though, there's a thing called "artifice" and another thing called "irony" which, imho, the Pet Shop Boys exemplify a hell of a lot more than "authenticity."

Rent
Shopping

Funny story, though. When I was younger I landed the Boston hipster's dream job, which was a position in the warehouse for the area's largest "alternative music" chain. I was so excited because I was finally going to live out my fantasies of rubbing shoulders with the international underground hipster elite.

Anyway, it wasn't very long at all before rumors were circulating through the place that I was gay, a communist, and an a*&$$#@. (Well, those latter two might be true.)

One time, I signed up for overtime to go set up one of their stores, and the other workers were listening to the most wretched hardcore, over and over and over. Think Blood for Blood, if that means anything. Finally, I got a chance to select the music and I threw on PSB's Discography. Hee hee! Let's just say it didn't help my reputation.
