Dragon #290 just made me cry. Greyhawk style.

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

There I sat. Thinking myself to beget any wiser by searching on the internets for some info on the enigma that is Sam Wood. Perhaps even finding me some online galleries..
There I sat, musing to myself, that Sam Wood, his gorgeous concept art, it had such a Greyhawkish (as I felt it) feel to it. Raw, real, something, mostly just gorgeous.
I needed more. There was such a heavy lack of Wood material lately. What is that? What did you say Pen and Paper database? Sam Wood did what? Dragon issue number#290.. Iuz? E-bay.. NOW!

-now.
Well I didn't really cry. But my heavens. The concept art.. gorgeous Elona, the best Iuz, ever, period! Circle of eight, so old, real, ART!. So WoTC got this.. and more? This really really good great wonderfull concept art? These wonderfull old campaign setting paired with an artist that can make it work? Those lost to print and nowhere to buy Living greyhawk journals? Also with great art? These, these, diamonds those pearls!? Al behind bars and out of reach.. no reprints in sight. A new setting book that you cant buy anywhere anymore...
Dream with me people! Dream with me about a Leatherbound 400+ page thick campaign book, wrought with love, time, patience and passion, art that loves the sepia drenched pages it's printed on, words that inspire and matter, dream with me that Iuz never unleashed a ether horde. Dream with me about the beauty. Dream with me about a Dragon issue with a gorgeous Sam Wood Iuz on the cover, Dream with me about CORE-BELIEFS Iuz, Xan-Yae, Tharizdun. Put on your Podcasts where Erik Mona talks for hours and hours about greyhawk, dream with me about the Bakluni going further west. That a lot of the things that happened in the Living campaigns arent taken into account when IT happens. And that IT will be something remembered for. Mostly lets just keep on dreaming and scraping the internet and the old books for any data, keep on reading Dungeon and Dragon for the occasional wonderfull love. The passion people! Can you feel it?!
And wonder, who is Sam Wood? Just who is he?

Sam did a great piece for the "Greyhawk Bible" (an in-house binder of info and illustrations intended to show to potential licensees in order to educate them about the look and feel of Greyhawk) of a black dragon fighting adventurers in the swamp. The thing looked so damn good that Lisa got it printed on a bunch of shirts. Some went to "Team Greyhawk" (including Erik, I believe) and I think most of the rest went to cons.

Oh, yes. I have that shirt.

Sam is a great artist. His work on Greyhawk was (like almost everyone's work on Greyhawk) ultimately wasted, but that "Greyhawk bible" art was really fun to see. I printed most of it in the article the OP is talking about.

Is that the same as the "Keeping the Balance" shirt, or is this another GH dragon shirt?

To Greyhawk! May the glory of its inhabitants never fade from the memories of D&D players!

Same one. If I remember correctly, you've got one too.

Yep, I do indeed have one. But I don't wear it much (cons only) - I don't want it to wear out, like my "I Survived Jaka's Story" Cerebus shirt did. *Raises a glass to the Greyhawk of yesteryear*

(though I love Age of Worms and Savage Tide!)

*tear*

A Greyhawk bible you say..
tis a crime its wasted!

*raises glass*

The crazy thing to me is that they(WotC)won't publish more Greyhawk material, yet it is the setting of their live game.
That is some b.s.

To Greyhawk. We will always remember.

Hilarious.

I had that shirt too.

Guess what happened to it?

Does Sam have a web site where we can view his work?

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for the reminder about this issue. Not only had I forgotten about Sam's artwork (seamless match to his Scarlet Brotherhood work, some of my favourite GH-related artwork), but I had forgotten about those Realms poster maps! Now I have some excellent visuals for my AoW game and the Realms game I'm playing in!

Now if I could only find the time to go through all those 3.xE Dragon issues once again...

I just wish he had,

as I said the man is quite the enigma on the internet. Not a gallery of work anywhere that I have ever found.
And that ladies and gentleman is a shame, because lots of great concept art and what not has been made by this man, the kinda pieces that make you say "Woah cool monster." and "SHeez I want to play a character like that." or "Man I just wish they had used the concept art and not this ugly redrawn by some-other-guy version."
Sam WOod just KNOWS how to draw cool demons.
Loved his living greyhawk journal stuff too, those things should get reprinted or bundled in a pdf package 3.5 style some time.. but that wont happen before all those issues are sold out or something? Amiright?
