The Music of a Savage Tide

Savage Tide Adventure Path

I thought I would start up the Savage Tide music thread. Right now I am organizing my library for the game I will be starting soon so I only have a few that I can say I will be using but I will add more soon. I will be using;

Pirates of the Caribbean 1 & 2
Man in the Iron Mask
Zorro 1 & 2
The Musketeer
Master and Commander
Farnon: Captain Horatio Hornblower

Don't forget Iron Maiden - Powerslave (rhyme of the ancient mariner)

Three Inches of Blood- Advance and Vanquish
-Fear on the Bridge (Upon the Boiling Seas 1)
-Lord of the Storm (Upon the Boiling Seas 2)
-Isle of Eternal Despair (Upon the Boiling Seas 3)

Three Inches of Blood in general is perfect for over the top D&D metal. Other songs from Advance and Vanquish:
-Destroy the Orcs
-Axes of Evil
-Premonition of Pain
-Swordmaster
-Dominion of Deceit
And my favorites:
-Deadly Sinners ("Enemies of METAL, your death is our reward!")
-Revenge is a Vulture

Oh yes.

The Decembrists (in 'The Mariner's Revenge Song') wrote:

And then, that fateful night

We had you in our sight
After twenty months, it seemed
Your starboard flank abeam
I was getting my muskets clean
When came this rumbling from beneath
The ocean shook
The sky went black
And the captain quailed
And before us grew
The angry jaws
Of a giant whale

The Soul Cages by Sting has several songs about the sea... the tile track could almost be an adventure in itself (about a young man who has a drinking contest with a demonic fisherman to free his father's soul). For that matter he also made a B-side called The Pirate's Bride.

No Savage Tide playlist could complete without this little gem

Showing my age here...one of my favorite Pirate-themed songs is "Pirates" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer off of their Works Volume 1 album. The words practically make me want to jump out of my seat, grab my cutlass in my teeth, and jump aboard the soon to be scuttled ship. Aaargh me maties!

YARR! Let us go buckle some swashes on that fine set o' pirates o'er there...

Claude Debussy--La Mer--perhaps a bit placid, but provides appropriate contrast to emphasize the "Savage" part of the Tide.

Oh, and we must have some sea chanties for the sailors to sing.

Ewan McColl and A.L. Lloyd, "Blow Boys Blow"--full of raucous sailor tunes.

Wow, they are?

I had no idea they were getting so popular.

No music selected for Savage Tides, but I'm still overhauling Age of Worms at the moment.
Some pieces I would probably use:

Leviathan, by Legion (First track)
Corvus Corax (because, yeah)
A select few tracks from Dead Can Dance (instrumentals, in particular)
I'm fond of using some tracks from Juno Reactor for action sequences, or on occasion ambience. For this one, Conquistador 1, Shark, Conga Fury and Song of Ancestors would all be good, I think.
Anything tribal. Depending on the tack, I might dig up some gamelan music or maybe some African drumming.

If I draw up a playlist, I'll post it here.

Maybe the overture to Wagner's "Flying Dutchman" as well--great for the big storm that's supposed to hit in episode 3.

And for those moments when the ultimate wild chaos of the Savage Tide takes control--

"Do What You Like" by Blind Faith

Try finding "Russian Sailor's Dance" by Gliere. Very fun to listen to, not to mention fun to play.

"Finsternis" - E Nomine (Vampiric Techno for climactic battles)

Pirates o/t Carib. I & II (background music)

"Oceania" - Oceania (a CD of Maori/New Zealand native music with female vocals. For Wilderness treks & adventures)

"The Sounds of Babies Audio Recording" (when my player's characters get killed during each adventure)

Master and Commander Sndtrk. (Travels & Battles at sea, thanks for the idea!)

For those looking for music of the Pacific Islanders, I would suggest "Oceania" or "The Whale Rider" soundtrack, the latter performed by Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance. Very ethereal.

Lisa Gerrard is awesome. An excellent choice for Savage Tide music. I'd also recomend any movie soundtrack that has anything to do with swashbuckling, pirates, dinosaur-infested islands, and jungles. Movies like Pirates of the Carribean, King Kong, Predator, Aguire: The Wrath of God, Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park II: The Lost World, Lost, and Master & Commander come to the top of my mind.

And, of course, the soundtrack to Conan. That one's good for any D&D campaign.

Personal taste: I'd stay away from using anything more modern. That heavy metal soundtrack didn't help Kull The Conquerer much.

Thanks for pointing me to E Nomine i had never heard of them, but i love it! Awesome!

Once they get into the jungle areas I intend to use the soundtrack from the first Predator film. It’s tense, atmospheric and will hopefully sound thrilling enough to emphasis the dire straits that PC characters will find themselves in!

If you get the soundtrack just remember to remove the Little Richard rock and roll track as to keep the tone right.
