Pronunciation

Maure Castle

How do you pronounce Maure?

I've been saying mah-RAY ... is that incorrect?

Thanks,
Ryan

I don't know the "right" answer, be we call them the "Mores", the plural of the word "more".

I'd pronounce it MWAR

Huh. I'd always pronounced it simply "Mar." Sadly, Maure did not make it into the Dragon Compendium's PronunseeAYshun Gyd...

I have also been pronouncing it "Mar." Perhaps someone in the know could shed some light?

I've been saying Mar-ree. Maybe UNCLE can set us all straight.

I've never run it, but I've always pronounced it MAO-ray, not sure why. If you pronounced it using German conventions it would come out MAO-ruh, French would be MORE or MO-ruh.

Scarab Sages

To add to the diversity of pronunciations, I've always said it 'MAO-ruh'

And since PoB and I agree on one pronunciation AT THE SAME FRIGGIN' TIME (!!!)... well, that must obviously be right by celestial decree.

uncle has said on his own message boards that it is pronounced "MOW" (to rhyme with now) "er" (as in the typical 'agent' ending like teacher or lawyer).

Mower Castle? I don't know - that does not strike the appropriate level of fear and terror in my opinion.

I've been pronouncing it Mar ... as in "her face was marred by the hideous scar".

That is exactly how I've been pronouncing it from the beginning. "Mow" (rhiming with "Cow") with "er" at the end. I think you're believing it's pronounced "Mower" (as in, cutting your lawn) which is why it's not to frightening. Maure Castle, it's such a fun place to enjoy a weekend.

Hm, I've been assuming it was MAW-ray, but it's a play-by-post game so it doesn't really matter.

Maure = Mawrh, or Moor with a light ah sound, or Marh, close to the phonetics of "Your".

Sorry, it wasn't named after an eel. Heh.

Paizo's forums need "Topic Reply" Notifications, as I didnt know that this topic had even started. Very good feature for busy writers..., or busy anyones for that matter :)

I always thought of the german Maure (MOWre), which would be moor in english - the old word for muslim people of northern africa. (Think of Mauretania) That added only to the strange allure of the place for me.

Stefan has nailed it exactly with Mauretania. :) Good show!

Hmm...I've been pronouncing it "Mmmountandoo"...as in "Fly by night mountain dew- Mountain Dew for you!" but that could be wrong...very wrong.
