Another warlock question

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

K, so I have a question about the hideous blow invocation- does using it provoke attacks of opportunity? i.e., do you have to make a Concentration check to avoid this? I don't have my Complete Arcane with me so I don't recall exactly. Also, does it apply only to the first melee attack in a given round if you get more than one?

And if you don't mind, don't hijack this thread with how broken warlock is- I already know. Let's just say a half-orc barbarian/warlock 2 handing a great axe with a 20 in STR using hideous blow every round is equal to a DM at home putting on lipstick and crying.

Yes, it provokes and you can invoke defensively.

The hideous blow invocation and melee attack is a standard action, so you'll only attack once per round.

Off topic, because it is a spell-like ability that requires a concentration check, can it be used in a rage?

My guess would be "no", but I wanted a second oppinion.

You are correct. Spells and spell-like abilities cannot be used in a rage. However, the Rage Mage prestige class from the Complete Arcane would allow you to use the Spell Rage ability to boost the power of the invocations (I believe).

I don't think the warlock is broken at all. You just have to make sure that you stick to the rules when you are running the character. At low levels warlocks seem too good to be true, but at medium to levels this "power discrepancy" seems to slow down somewhat, and at extremely high levels give me a wizard anyday.

Sorry about highjacking the thread. I couldn't help it!

The warlock is actually weak if you ignore that unlike every other spellcaster it gets all of its abilities at-will. The only other class who gets all abilities at-will in all circumstances is the fighter, who is a lot tougher than the warlock.

Yeah, he can use his Eldritch Blast once per round, but only once. If he wants to melee he can add the damage to a melee hit, but he lacks the base attack, hit points and armour proficiency to do this as effectively and safely as the fighter and he only gets one per round.
