After seeing the previews for "Pirates of the Caribian: Dead man's Chest" I was rather suprised to find out that Davy Jones is a mindflayer. And what was more amusing is that he has a kraken for a pet. Infact his whole crew is apparently mindflayers. Intresting... What class would he be? I am going to see Pirates of the Caribian 2 when it comes out on Friday. I will then know more about this, but for now maybe a few others here at Paizo have noticed. Tell me your insight on this, I will check back later.

A mind flayer AND a Monkee?!
It's an octopus face but yes, it does indeed look like an illithid del mar.

Check out Stormwrack, page 68; the Sea Witch, for the sample character and his octopus familiar!
I first saw Davy Jones in the Forbidden Planet catalogue, and had to laugh, since I'm running a campaign based around the old Saltmarsh modules (original events, ie 25 years prior to timeline in the DMG2), and the PCs have agreed to help the lizardmen with their litle 'problem'.
One of my players used a Detect Thoughts scroll on a sahaughin prisoner at the lizard lair (which I hadn't anticipated). I had a vague idea of what I had planned for later (a trip to the Underdark) but hadn't written that far ahead.
Still, I decided to reward my player's ingenuity with a vision of their leader, a half-sahaughin/half-illithid, ordering them to seek out the fleeing lizardfolk. Not that he could understand a word, but I only had to describe him (waggle fingers in front of face, whilst going "blobble-blubleobble") for the player's face to drop.
He returned to the party, some of whom had a big problem with working with lizardfolk, and when they asked what happened, he just shook his head and said "The dirty sea-devils. Wipe them out. All of them, just wipe them out!"
Having then seen the ad for Davy Jones, I just have to include a half-illithid dread pirate. I want to see the look on that player's face when he realises the curse has spread further than he ever expected.
Priceless.

That's the scariest brainsucker I've ever seen, and I've seen some brainsuckers in my time.

I really thought that he was a mindflayer at first but then I saw the ad a couple more times and I realized that I was wrong...
Mindflayers don't live in water do they...it's the underdark
But he does look almost exactly like one except for a few minor details...
Well ever seen a dried out Mind Flayer? I can see it now, somewhere in the underdark a half dried out Mind Flayer staggering to a pool of water and diving in. He emerges with an oninous... "AHHH That's better!"
Who says Mind Flayer's don't need water? they're like squid, brain sucking sea monkeys. LOL

Just came back from the movie and..., well, he is not a mind flayer. Perhaps a half-farspawn? Damned if I know, really...
I saw the movie last night. It was a great movie for sure! But sadly no mindflayers *sob*. Not quite sure what he was but he did have the kraken. I now look at the kraken in a whole different way, I used to think the kraken was just a giant squid...after seeing the movie it makes a person think twice about the kraken. The ending is great but i'm not gonna spoil anything for people that are still going to see it.

I heard that they made a third one with the second movie but they havn't named it yet, but the person that told me said it was goin to be rated
R...kinda like the Harry Potter series...hmmm...That sucks though...

Glad I wasn't the only one that went "ILLITHID!" when seeing the previews/trailers.
Check out the recent Doctor Who 2-parter "The Satan Pit", if you like jumping out of your seat and shouting "Mind Flayer!!!" at your spouse...
...or "Illithid!", for you newbies and greenhorns who want to get all 'technical' about it (grumble, been sortin' out them thar squidheads since module D1, pesky varmints...grumble, if they weren't bad enough, that bastard in the metal tower in the Barrier Peaks had a friggin' 'blaster pistol'; what's up wi'that?).

That's no mind-flayer -- that's a Cthulhuspawn!

The ocean's bestiary provided so much detail for Lovecraft's mad elder gods that I cannot help but to agree with you there. He had a crab claw for a left hand as well, making him a decided jumble from the Red Lobster specials menu.

I had a player once whose barbarian/ranger character fancied himself an Underdark gormet. The guy prized illithid heads like they were calamari, and would go nuts any time he saw one and try to eat its head. This would in turn confuse the mind flayers something awful; "I thought we're supposed to eat his head! What's that crazy ape doing?" SPLORCH. "AAAAAAAH!"
Hi-larity.
As far as the movie, someone on the writing crew obviously knows his Lovecraft... and his Gygax ;) I'd recommend the movie as a great way to get into the mood for the Savage Tide AP. "Yo ho, yo ho, a squidy's head for me..."

I think if you eat the head of a creature that eats human brains, such practice will render your own grey matter spongiform. Mad Illithid Disease, perhaps? Damn prions.
But I guess the look on the squids' faces when they see the Flayer Slayer in action is probably worth a lil spongeheadedness.
