I realize I'm probably in the minority, but I found his "generic" gamer-geek anecdotes to be quite enjoyable.
They made me nostagic for the old days of Gaming... when we'd play AD&D one week, Gamma World the next, and then play that incredibly lame fantasy board game with the hexagonal tiles (I can't even remember the name of it.)
We played everything back then, and didn't really care what brand-name or genre it was.
Wil reminded me of those days.
These days, just try to find a guy who'll play D&D AND Panzerblitz with you!

Maybe you are in the majority. I'm not certain. However, I do know that I agree with you. I try to visit his site from time to time to check his postings. Unfortunately, I haven't seen a D&D related post in a very long time - maybe not ever, now that I think of it.

First off, I agree with you. None of my D&D players like board games. Aaargh!
And the hexagonal tiles game, was that Titan? If so, I object to your use of the word lame. Titan rocks! Not that anyone will play it with me anymore. Kids these days!

I just got my second copy of Dungeon #114 in the mail (after having lost my original), and the first thing I noticed was Wil's article, and I thought:
"Wow... I really liked these articles."
I wonder, would Wil want to come back? Will Wil wheel wonders once again? Where would one wander to woo Wil's will to write wonderous writings? Would we welcome Wil's words once more? Would Wil weather the words once so woefully worked against him?
Hmmm.

Oh, yes, taunt the gibbering lunatic. It's all fun and games until I pose the question:
No, I won't do that here. Hijacking and all. Refer to off-topic posts for my next abomination. Bwahahahahahaha!Valegrim |
I thought Wil's description on VH-1's top 100 games was pretty good. I cant believe some people are so stupid as to think that peeps who play/live d&d can't get a date. Many of my gamer friends are married and have several to many kids; most of the others have steady girlfriends/boyfriends and there are only a couple that are mostly dateless and only one that hasn't had a date since stuff crawled out of the ocean and began traversing dry land. I haven't read any of his articles, but I would if they were interesting, kinda like reading these threads.

Actually, "Wil Save" has been dead less than a year. Yeah... I know, NOT a Dragon article, but the board topic called to me. Maybe I should move this thread over to the Dungeon threadlist.

How about we say almost a year? That's pretty accurate, neh?
I guess I get twice as much utility from not having Wil Save than I thought I did. Each month without it has seemed like two months worth of bliss.
Needless to say, I remain unenthused about Wil Save's potential return. If I wanted to read some random guy's opinion about D&D/gaming, I'll go to here or to rpg.net. If I want to hear about the exploits of Wil's step-kids and his relationships with them, I'll go to his blog.
I personally think there's a curse on the short columns in Dragon/Dungeon. I think I've read 2-3 campaign workbooks that I have liked since the section was added. Monte Cook's articles are painfully boring and uninteresting, which is shocking considering the high quality of his work in every other forum. About the only thing I like in the back 1/4 of Dungeon are the Maps of Mystery and Critical Threats (yes, I am intentionally excluding Downer from things I like).
Your mileage may vary.

What's wrong with Downer? Downer's gorgeous. I mean, to each his own and what not, I just don't get it. Is it a "pages better spent" issue?
I enjoyed Wil's articles, but I can see someone else's lack of enthusiasm. But Downer? Downer's cool.
I want to like Downer, but most of the time I feel like it's 1/3 of the panels necessary to tell the story that Kyle Hunter really wants to tell. It doesn't flow cleanly and I don't really care about the characters. It's probably a function of being a monthly 2 page comic - I've never really liked any of the story comics in Dragon/Dungeon (though I never read SnarfQuest or Wormy). I wouldn't advocate cutting Downer out, but I don't get anything from it or 90% of the campaign workbooks.
Monte's column though should be taken out in a field and buried in a shallow grave. As a replacement, just use his blog posts, or his discussions of game design. The original Dungeoncraft articles were also a much better resource.
