Pelor's militant side

Pelor was generally a low-key deity until recently, right? Are there any factions within his church that focus of the destruction of evil and darkness? Ones that might be prone to taking things a little "too far?"

Pelor has actually been one of the cornerstones of the good gods of Greyhawk since the campaign world was first published. Along with Rao, and to a lesser extent Heironeous and St. Cuthbert, Pelor is one of the most powerful of all the good gods (some might say the most powerful). He has frequently been involved in battling the forces of evil, and is also seen as a god of strength and war in some of Greyhawk's kingdoms. Whether or not his followers have taken the battle against the forces of evil and darkness too far is up to individual DMs. In normal D&D lore Pelor's priests are epitomes of goodness. Remember, only in Eberron do clerics still gain spells for evil acts. A cleric of Pelor who starts killing off drow children would certainly turn evil and lose his clerical status.

One of the guys on #greytalk suggested I use Pholtus instead. I also found a Pelor cult called the Circle of Light that might be what I'm looking for. Thanks, Phil.

It wouldn't be accurate to say that there are "factions" within the church embracing a more active role at destroying creatures of evil and darkness; Pelor's temples are so widespread and long-established that it would be very unusual for all the members of a particular temple to convert over to the "aggressive" side of the faith. Instead, you'll find a typical temple population is mostly the focus-on-the-positive sort of folks we've known about for generations, with a small number who are more likely to take up arms against evil.

Pelor's servant-goddess Mayaheine (goddess of protection, justice, and valor) and her followers are the primary sources of anti-evil aggression within Pelor's church (Mayaheine's followers worship Pelor as well and obey his priests as if they were priests of Mayaheine). You may find a new temple of Mayaheine in an area (possibly as an annex to a Peloran temple) and _they_ may be actively hunting evil, and there may be Pelorans who team up with them.

Sean, that's originally where I was heading. However, once I found out about the Circle of Light... it just made for a better story.

You (anyone) don't happen to know if the "Holy Circle of the Light of Faith" has ever been mentioned anywhere else, by any chance? I'm assuming they were created for Weapons of Legacy, but it never hurts to be sure.

EP - can you tell me where the Holy Circle was mentioned at all? You say you heard of it but don't mention where so I can't look up that reference to see if it sparks my memory. :)

Sean, the HCotLoF was mentioned in the description of the Hammer of Witches in Weapons of Legacy.

Ahhh. See, WotC basically only uses Greyhawk as an occassional source of names for things in core (non-FR, non-Eberron, etc.) D&D. Normally there isn't an effort to consider prior (canonical) GH material when doing so. So I'm pretty sure that's the first time anyone made a reference to that group (and technically it's not canonical, if you care about such things).

Sean Reynolds for the win!

Since we have you here, do you know any specific Cuthbertite orders that may target adventurers as members?

I care, insofar as canonical considerations impact my submissions to Paizo. In my own campaign, I'm quite lazy when it comes to canon.
