Indeed it was. I netted it in my first round of D&D demon research about a decade ago, which is why we included it in Maure Castle (Dungeon #112). Speaking of that adventure, it has a lot of really interesting gnoll encounters that might be used as a springboard for development of the race, and Dragon has (in ancient times) done ecologies for the gnolls and flinds that are worth a look.
Incidentally, WotC's old Chainmail line had a number of really excellent gnoll miniatures that you can probably find pretty cheap somewhere out on the internet.
