Spatially, isn't Lyzandred's domicile relatively close to Maure Castle? Considering Lyzandred's interest in potent magical items and keeping them out the hands of "fools", has the lich had any interaction with the Maure Castle?
If this is already explained in the adventures, I apologize for being a dodder head and not reading first then asking questions. The beauty of message boards is you can ask questions first then read later. ::wink::

Lyzandred was a Baklunish wizard who was obsessed with magic items. After seeing a magic item annihilate a large group of his people, he "flipped". His obsession shifted to taking magic items away from those he deemed unworthy of their power. He secreted these magic items away in the Ethereal. Mortality became an issue that lichdom took care of. He has since been working through agents and luring magic item-rich adventurers to his crypt with tales of extensive treasures.
His name is equivalent to the "Boogeyman" in the Domain of Greyhawk. He's the catalyst to PCs getting involved in The Doomgrinder scenario. I thought he would have some interest in the goodies of Maure Castle, in so far as having some agents in the area in observation mode.

Lyzandred actually has a number of false crypts located throughout Greyhawk, particularly in the Abbor-Alz and the Cairn Hills. The crypts are indeed designed to lure adventurers in and then transport them to Lyzandred's demiplane (on which lives a modified extraplanar race of kobolds). Lyzandred's true crypt is actually hundreds of individual chambers connected via magic portals (as in those described in some Forgotten Realms books), teleportation circles, phase doors, and other magical means of entrance and egress. Lyzandred keeps his 'crypt' stocked with complex puzzles and illusions, and dozens and dozens of monsters, some of which are unique to his demiplane (such as a colossal mummified cat). Lyzandred is insane in that cold calaculating way, and is served by loyal (and powerful) retainers. His alignment in 2nd Ed. was actually LN or N rather than being evil making him sort of like an arch-lich (or good lich for the uninitiated). Unfortunately, because of Lyzandred's preoccupation with safeguarding magic items his crypt is barren of items except for those possessed by himself and his retainers or carefully hidden away in hidden vaults. O'h, and he lives in a giant black sphere which is immune to magic and most physical damage (like an opaque spherical wall of force), and which allows him to scry on everything in his crypt (like a giant crystal ball).

I think you could easily make the argument that Lyzandred may consider the magic items in Maure Castle well protected already. I mean between the Iron Golem, the hydra construct and the other nasties it’s a death trap for adventurers.
Can anyone give me a reference for information about Lyzandred? He sounds like an interesting character and I have never heard of him. A module or dragon article perhaps?
Thanks.

Sadly, I can decipher all of the abbreviations. Perhaps less sadly, I own all those texts.
Nothing sad about either state of being, of course---the former just shows that you have an advanced degree in Greyhawkiana, while the latter just shows that you have excellent taste :D
Thanks grodog, I'll use that info to pull together some useful rumours next time I'm DM'ing in the Cairn Hills regions.
De nada. Jason's index is an invaluable Greyhawk research tool---more important than many GH books themselves! Unfortunately he hasn't been updating the index since 2003, which means that it doesn't include any Maure Castle content, for example (hmmmm, perhaps I'll index those, and send them to Jason, since they'd be helpful for running MC anyway...).
