Action Points anyone?

Shackled City Adventure Path

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

I'm deep in the planning stages of a Shackled City campaign and have been reading some of the posts about how hard the campaign is and the numbers of PC deaths are rather daunting.

I'm currently running an Eberron game and I'm very pleased with the Action Points rules from the ECS and Unearthed Arcana books and I plan to keep using them as we begin the Shackled City.

I'm wondering if anyone else has been using these rules an if they seem to have any impact on survivability in the campaign.

Been running an Eberron game for months now with the action points. At least for my game, it has made a definite difference. It has saved characters from dying, and helped in many, many other ways. It's not abused that much, and the players love it as it adds that extra 'adventure' flavor to the game. I personally will use it in all my games from now on.

We've been using Action Points in our games for about a year now. I love them, as they add in the ability to do really heroic things on the spur of the moment. Just this week, my halfling rogue (in Forge of Fury) used an action point for the Throw Anything feat to slay, by way of a longspear, a Grick escaping with an unconcsious ally. My rogue would never have taken that feat for any reason, but being allowed to use for an action point made all of the difference on saving our ally.

I plan on starting SCAP at the first of the year and can't possibly see my group surviving without Action Points for an Adventure Path such as this.

Before Action Points we used a Luck attribute, that you could permanently spend a point of to re-roll any roll, but Action Points are far superior mechanically.

I'm using the Unearthed Arcana Action Point system, with the difference that I reward action points for brilliant role-playing, players painting and modelling their own miniatures, etc -- so each player has earned around 5-6 action points between 1st and 5th level.

It does seem to make the PCs less timid ...

I'm running SC in Eberron right now (we're mostly finished with Life's Bazaar) and I've found that the Action Points have made a HUGE difference. Prevented a TPK in one instance, and overall kept the group kickin' in situations where they were in way over their heads. I like 'em. They add a nice dramatic touch to things.

I like how you are doing it. I was using Unearthed Arcana action points in my campaign. However, they are *really* strong and the characters always seemed to have enough when they needed them, or even when they didn't.

I think granting them at the DM's discretion is much better than getting them at level-up.

We have been using them in our Eberron campaign and love 'em!!!! Its always great when we are fighting for our lives and use the AP's to get out of trouble. The only problem is that i keep forgetting about them and have used no more than 5 in six levels. Hehe

APs are in use in the SC campaign I am running. So far, it has saved the lives of two PCs by allowing the Cleric to heal two extra times after a battle against a raggamoffyn. I am sure that they will be used primarily to pull the PC's bacon out of the fire more than a few times...

We've been using action points for Age of Worms. I've kinda meshed the rules from the Eberron Campaign Setting and Unearthed Arcana, then added extra ideas on how to use them. My basic idea was that it takes two action points for anything that add to damage, one action point for anything that adds to defense.

It's been very useful in the game, and I don't think it has unbalanced anything. It's definately nice to have when a PC is laying at -9 hp, that's for sure.
