w00t! I heard back on a query o' mine! May 11th.

Liberty's Edge

Yahoooo! That Rocks! You go girl!
Now hurry up and post again real quick, so's I don't hide your name from your adoring public.

I sent in a ghoul query February 4, 2006 and an "Assorted creatures" query March 28, 2006. I haven't heard anything since the polite refusal of a mismatched creature complilation including dire turkeys which was over a year ago.

If our queries aren't responded to, how long should we wait before we try resending?

Fuzzy Necromancer wrote:

before you try resending anything, send an e-mail inquiring about the status of your query. it can sometimes take a while for them to respond to queries, especialy new monster queries which fall under the perview of the Features Articles (which are generaly some what slow to get a response too).

Hey all
Would appreciate some help identifying a specific artist and locating one of his images. My leads are pretty vague but here they are. There was an image of a pharaonic like deity on the cover of a dragon magazine. i cannot remember the specific issue but it must have been in the mid to late nineties. Please help me.

If you want to do a search, go to the Dragon issues here in Paizo and look at the thumbnails of the covers.

I've been re-sending the same monster query every 3 or 4 months, just re-wording it and indicating how far back I first sent it. Just waiting, really.

Congrats!

Was this a feature querry, or was for Wes or Mike?

That strikes me as a really good way to piss off the editors, actually.

Well, consider me ignorant of the workings of a magazine... here's egg on my face. Seriously though, brutal but frank opinion.

Was a feature query, and it was for Mike.

Technically, Wes and I do departments, not features. But it's all semantics, really.

But yes, it was for me.

(And yes, that means I'm trying to work through my email logjam. As some of you might have noticed in your inboxes yesterday. More today! In theory.)

I just got a response to a spellcraft query I sent in June 6th. They passed on it, but I am pleased as punch with the response time.

Hey, Dragon Black Hole gang! First visit into this particular vortex. I've been asked to write an article for Dragon supporting the Tides of Dread AP soon to appear in Dungeon and wanted to know if Dragon uses the same style sheet as Dungeon. Anybody?

We do not. In fact, we usually strip the formatting from articles we receive and put it back in ourselves. Yes, there's a reason why we do that. ;)

Don't worry about formatting for us. Just write the article and make it clear what should be headlines, what should be sidebars, and what should be regular text.

Hey
Dragon Mag. issue 263. For the game, who was the featured cover artist?
Gregori

Hey Mike
Off topic here but i thought you might be able to help me relatively easily. Who did the cover art on the 263 issue of Dragon mag?

Thank you, Mr. McCartor. That's simple enough.

gregori, it was Michael Sutfin (I had a look on the issue's contents page).

Eric, who I understand is a cleric, is correct. :)

You're welcome.

PS: There's only one "c" in my name, and it's lowercase. ;)

PPS: And if you email Jason Bulmahn, make sure to put the "h" in the right place. :)

PPPS: Wes has the easiest name of all the Dragon editors. :)

Any chance of the Dragon spewing forth any query responses anytime soon? I'm hungry for a few morsels from his table...

I sent in a class acts query on May 20th (or somewhere around there) and haven't yet gotten a response about it. I was definitely planning on giving it more time before sending a poke over to paizo, but I wasn't sure if this meant that they were well beyond where they should have come across my query since they're up to June 6 apparently. Or are spellcraft queries just sorted through faster?

well they are handled by a different editor, so it might just mean that W.S. had less on his plate then Mike does, or goes through things faster... or any other number of things... I too have at least one query for class acts that I sent to Mike before I sent in that spellcraft query that he has not yet responed to, but I am not concerned that I have not yet heard back about it.

Wes is indeed quicker at the response turnaround than I. I have emails going back to May 12th that I need to respond to.

Don't expect to hear any kind of article responses from at least myself or Jason before Gen Con. Wes might sneak in some replies, but I doubt Jason will have the time and I'm not sure I will.

Really? Arrgh, the prophets lied to me!

Well-played Gen Con, well-played. Don't get too cocky though Gen Con, I won't forget.

Does this mean you'll be going to GenCon?

If so - cool, you can buy me those cookies you owe me. :D

If not - bummer, I have to buy my own cookies. :(

No, I won't be going to Gen Con this year. Hit up Bulmahn and Wes for the cookies I owe you. ;D

i've got queries so old, they've got mold growing on them. ;) i really don't remember what the date of the oldest one was, but i think there were 6 or 7 (just sent the most recent one about 2 weeks ago, however)

You shouldn't be surprised, as the source of the prophecy was called <prophets> Lies. ;)

They also offer the following prophecies:

Don't Cry.
Nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain (or the wait for query responses).

:)

Wait a minute. You took a pass last year. Surely someone else can mind the office this year ...

Didn't the other staffers do unnatural things to Mike's desk last year? Or was it the other way around? I vaguely remember some pictures being taken and posted here....

UNNATURAL? O_O

I don't remember. I think it was some sort of prank. Unnatural probably wasn't the appropriate word--remember that English is my second language.

Anyway...too bad Mike can't go to Gencon for two years in a row. Of course, I've NEVER gone, but I don't work in the game industry.

IIRC, young Mister Sutter and I engaged in some office-related shenanigans last year when everyone else left for Gen Con. I don't recall exactly, but I think it had to do with taking pictures of cubes and doing something to them. Maybe moving around everyones' action figures and whatnot?

This year my absence from Gen Con is by choice (two years ago it was for surgery, last year it was for a lack of funds, this year it's by choice). Maybe next year. Maybe.

I'm sure whatever it was, it's all Sutter's fault. Kids these days! Bah!

You're gonna miss the "fan voice-over/dub your favorite anime character" thingee going on this year. I don't know much about it, other than it just came with the gencon email reminder, but as soon as I saw that, I thought: That's right up Mike's alley, being anime and all.

That's so freaking COOL! How about a new karaoke craze where instead of singing the beegees, you voice-over your favorite scene in anime. I'm surprised we haven't seen it yet. $_$

It happens all the time at anime conventions, but yeah, I'm surprised nobody has tried to market the concept.

Well there is movieoke.

Got a response from Mike about a a query I sent 6/3 today.

Contributor

Looks like Jason's starting to grind through the black hole. I just received a rejection for a feature query sent in on Feb 11th. *sobs*

edit: and a second rejection of a query e-mail sent in on Mar 31st. *sobs some more*

I, also, just got a form rejection from mid-March. I'm sad, and I'm gonna go have a cry.

Paizo Employee Director of Games

Hey there all,

I have indeed started going through the pile. This stack goes up through early May. Anything sent after that will be reviewed after GenCon. As a note, I usually send out all the rejections first before moving on to approval letters. For those of you who got some of these first batch, keep writing. This most recent batch was full of really good ideas and it was pretty tough trimming it down to a reasonable amount of articles.

Good Luck

Jason Bulmahn
Managing Editor of Dragon

still waiting to see if i'll hear anything... but not sweating it if i don't; the next week or so will be a pretty busy time for me, and my computer at home is down anyway! :o

Also received the official rejection from the query I sent back in December that I knew was going to be rejected - it was for a big, juicy racial sub article for monsters. But the big mean WotC overlord said no more racial subs. :9

Jason Bulmahn wrote:

This is good news for the one query I still have out there. Unless, of course, you're just delaying the rejection letter to tease me. :P

Well, I did say "don't expect to hear," and not "you won't hear." So hey, it's like Christmas in July. If that saying didn't suck. And if Christmas was all about being rejected. So okay, it's like Valentine's Day in July! Or maybe The-Month-Leading-Up-To-Prom in July! Those are all about rejection, right? ;D
