Sign of the smoking eye

Shackled City Adventure Path

So one of my player a sorcerer\elemental sevant just got the sign of the smoking eye by thowing his familier into the flam.

the way everything works out is that he would get 9th level spells at 20th level. This was before he got SSE. Now he dose not get them at all or until 21st level depending.. anyone one have any advice now how to work this out? he is bummed about the situation but i told him that he did it to himslef.

I'd have to agree with you. A reasonable Wizard/Sorcerer usually goes to great pains to keep his familiar safe. That doesn't usually include throwing it into flames to see what happens.

He made a personal sacrifice to become the potential ruler of Occipitus (though he may not have known it at the time). Personal sacrifice for the potential of great power. Tell him congradulations... he's well on his way to being your campaign's next great villian.

Well, wether he did it to himself or not, it would indeed be a bummer. That is really true of any true spellcaster... it is the bread and butter to be able to cast higher level spells as quickly as possible. This delayed it a level... I would be miffed too.

My suggestion would be to allow him to research a ritual that allows him to make use of an optional rule presented in the Unearthed Arcana book from WOTC. Basically it was designed to allow characters who chose powerful races to erase some of the ECL as they got higher and higher up in levels. (Rational being that the power gained from a +1 ECL race becomes less and less equal to a full level as the character gains more and more levels). You sacrifice a certain amount of XP to negate the ECL.

Make it a quest either to discover the ritual or obtain some of the needed componenets... but it would allow a spell caster to get back on track.

As my group has evolved nearly a 2-level spread over time, and as it was about the lowest XP-total PC who received the Sign, I just waived the +1 LA entirely.

It's funny he recived the SOTSE and turened evil (he sacrofised his familer) any way the party paladen decied to take him and leave the party So i had them bolth turn in their charater sheets to me and build new charaters. the idea was that that paladen wantd to bring him back from evil to good. They will be coming back but i think that evil will take over the paladen and when they attack it should be fun... not sure how i'm going to work this but we will see
