Is there a black hole in the submissions room at Paizo?

Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement, you have motivated me to spend the remainder of Christmas-break writing.

Just a general *bump* to pull this awesome thread out of the archives. Happy New Year to everybody! :)

Not speaking for myself here, but it seems like what with the holidays being over and the official addition of James "Man-Paste-Munching" Sutter to the editorial line-up (congrats) that perhaps those half-dozen lost souls still awaiting a response might hear it in say a month or two?

GGG

I haven't seen anything on here from Jeremy Walker in a while. Could Mr Sutter just be replacing Mr Walker and not be an addition?

drunken_nomad wrote:

::Gasp!:: But all my stuff's on his desk! Say it ain't so!

GGG

And so is mine...and Shroomy's...and a couple of other people...

and of course Zherog's.

I'm thinking he took all of our proposals and went south for the winter. Maybe Trinidad, or is it Tobago?

Contributor

It's both. :D They have an identity crisis down there.

It would be cool if we could get to the bottom of the pile so I could hear back on my one proposal. And two questions:

1) Any word on when the next submission meeting will take place?
2) When submitting campaign workbook articles, should they go to dungeon@paizo.com or directly to Jeremy?

Howdy everybody!

First off, I am NOT replacing Jeremy - he's been bumped up to Assistant Editor as well, and there will now finally be three editors dedicated to Dungeon. It seems likely that I'll be taking over the first-round submission stuff (if only because Customer Service has left me with mad organizational skillz), but everybody's exact duties will be decided sometime next week. In any case, the next submission meeting hasn't been scheduled yet, and when submitting anything (workbook or otherwise), your best bet is to send it to gatekeeper@paizo.com - our response times should hopefully be improving greatly in the coming weeks.

Later!

*scratches head*

gatekeeper? Does that e-mail address replace dungeon@paizo.com for everything - queries and such? Does that address also apply to those crazy guys over on the Dragon side?

And has Jeremy mumbled anything about getting back to the rest of the folks from the summer/early fall meeting? :D

Double Awesome! Congrats to all y'all!

Gatekeeper is strictly a Dungeon thing, and it's only for queries and submissions - requested manuscripts still go to the normal addresses. Dungeon@paizo.com remains a valid address, but all submissions sent there get forwarded to Gatekeeper anyway, so it's more efficient to just send your stuff straight there.

As for where Jeremy is on the last round of subs - I really have no idea. Where we at, J-dub?

*Whew* Good to know. I'm sitting on 3 queries, all sent to the gatekeeper address. For a while I was fretting that I'd possibly sent them into a proverbial black hole after all.

Ccongrats on the promotions! You guys are doing an awesome job at Dungeon. Keep up the good work!

Jeremy! Congratulations on the promotion. It is definately well deserved in my opinion.

James Sutter! You're our man on the floor now eh? Awesome! Can't wait to get some rejections from you. ;-)

Glad to hear some others are waiting on responses still from the last meeting. I too am waiting with baited breath on more than a couple proposals. Put me out of my misery! I can take it. I'll be strong. sniff! :-)

Contributor

Hi Jeremy and all those anxiously awaiting responses!

I was just wondering if there is any hope of getting our responses anytime soon, or if Jeremy could hook us up with an update as to how long it may be before our fears, hopes and dreams can be put to rest. Thanks in advance for any info!

We've decided that, going forward, we're just going to reprint old issues in new issues. It's a lot easier; the articles are already edited and laid out, and this'll give us a chance to go back and incorperate some of the adventrue eratta into those things where appropriate. We may or may not be adding new or alternate art to the adventures, but no promises there; we might just use photoshop to reverse or mosaic or put some other filters on them to spruce them up. All of which means that since we won't be needing any more adventures, we won't need to have any more submission meetings.

OR! We just finally got us a new full-time editor, and this addition will give us the time to get back on the ball with adventure submissions. If THIS is the case, then we should be able to get the current issue taken care of sooner, which SHOULD give us the chance to do an approval meeting as soon as the third week of January.

OMM (Oh my me)!!! Just remember to reprint "The Menagerie" every month that contains an "R" in its name.

Ten bucks says you're going to be inundated with outraged calls from people who failed their Sense Motive check to detect sarcasm (DC 5). There was a great Penny Arcade posting where they claimed to be suing all makers of webcomics for infringing on their comics and apparently they got a ton of hate mail.

Thanks for letting us know James, so we can move on with our sad pathetic little lives. I am going to go turn on the oven. Talk to you never.

Hey GGG!

Maybe if we keep quoting James' post without the last paragraph, unobservant readers who are also interested in submitting proposals may believe it, thus cutting out plenty of competition. Bring on the Hate Mail!!!

There's a two small typos in "The Menagerie" though I don't have my copy with me at the moment. Also there needs to be a second door place on the map in the upstairs area with the stairwell in it.

Also are you going to be going through and updating pre-3.0 or were you just going to use the 3.0 and up adventures? I'd love to see a redux of Dungeon issue 10 a very strong issue indeed.

We won't be updating issues that far back, because they're in black and white and the page sizes are a different size. In fact, I think what we're going to do is just reprint one magazine. Haven't figured out what issue yet, but chances are good we'll only reprint the ads and leave the rest of the pages blank with a header that says, "NOTES." We'll be sure to change paper stock too, to a stock that doesn't accept pencil lead and that melts away if put in contact with pen ink.

OH! And the pages will contain microscopic spider's eggs so that when you flip through the magazine, they'll embed in your fingers and give you a terrbile rash.

now you're just getting silly. lol.

you think that will save you from my massive stereo blasting non-stop "Party all the time" and "Feelings (whoa-wo-wo, feelings)" as the Band of Five Writers invade the Renton Compound? We are not afraid of bugs--well, except for the creepycrawlies that Peter Jackson put in the valley of Kong. Those leeches and cave crickets and whatever else ?!?!?! definitely gave me the willies. Please, whatever you do, DON'T put those kinds of bugs in the magazine.

Be sure to include that Play-by-Mail ad. That one's my favorite!

Yes, about this sumbmissions thing... I take it these submissions are in response to the add I saw in Dungeon, correct? The one about their need for writers and such? I'm rather lost here... exactly how do I go about -making- submissions?

Any bones you can throw the 'new guy' would be helpful. Thanks.

Well LeFey, the first thing you need to do is get a copy of the submission guidelines for the magazine you want to submit to. This is the one for Dungeon and here is the Style Sheet with all the fonts they use. Read the guidelines. If you get to a section that says they'll get back to you with in a month about your propsal take that for what it is - a bald-faced lie. ;) See the first ten posts on this thread for a good example.

Next you'll probably (depending on the article) want to write up a proposal. It should now officially be single spaced, 1 inch margins, single space after the period. I use 9 point Verdana. It should be no more than 1,000 words long, the fewer the better. Be specific about the sorts of encounters you have in mind and how the characters are involved. Don't bury the lead. If you have a "cool trap" don't say it's cool, prove it's cool by explaining it.

If you get the time look for the editors' posts (particularly on this thread) they usually will point you in the right direction (except for the last two before this post) those where just for fun -we hope).

The stat block format has changed since the guidelines were posted so just look to the more current magazines and Dungeon Master's Guide II for examples.

Keep submitting. Persistance and improving technical writing skills eventually pay off.

It is also very important that you not only not write better proposals than I do, but that you write fewer of them as well. No more than ten or twelve every three months.

;) Hope that helps, and good luck,
GGG

Damn it! Need another Origins soon so we can catch up on old times! I am coterminously working on three ditties for Dungeon right now, one is going well. The other two are mewling for my attention. You've got your hands full too as I understand it!

Dude! Go to bed. It's got to be like 8:30pm on the islands by now.

I know what you mean though, the I've decided to try coming up with a prestige class that rhymes with "orange" and it just ain't happening.

Oh well, I have two or three things I owe Dungeon as well. I best get back to 'em.

On second thought maybe not. :-(

This is a cool idea and I might steal it for an adventure. Very "Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco. Poisonous Tomes. That's Dungeon in a nut shell. Highly addictive poison.

Just in case any of the remaining people from this last summer are still waiting...I got my rejections this morning. Of the 7, they said 'no thanks' to 6 of them and I am in the process of asking about the last one...because it wasn't in the list. So, maybe?!?!?!?!!?

Hey Nomad! Me too!!! I got served! ;-)

Actually I do get one resubmit, so that is really cool. I hope I fare better at the next approval meeting which was hinted at for the third week in January. That's next week y'all. I am pumped! I have lots more subs in the oven this time around.

Peace and Good Luck to Everybody!

I just got one rejection, though I expected that one to be rejected. That still leaves me 3 from the August meeting.

*sigh*

Yeah, I got mine too. Back to the drawing board it is.

Next week? Yikes! I only have 8 and a backdrop in -for Dungeon anyway. Chris Wissel probably has like thirty-seven or so in!

I for one think they're taking this "Third Editor" thing way too seriously. I remember the good ole days, when you would submit a propsal for something and then wait until your toddlers finished their pre-med program before you they would tell you they lost it. And you know what? We grateful, by cracky. Yes, sir.

Did I ever tell you the story of how I once killed a grizzly bear with my loose-leaf notebook?

I got my rejection too. Le sigh.

Sorry to hear about the rejections everyone. Better luck next time. That must be most of them though, because they actually reached Zherog's stuff at the bottom.

They're definitely making progress on the pile. I just got another rejection. Two are left in play.

Contributor

You mean my stuff wasn't on the bottom! *gasp* Meh - probably just a delay in the e-mail. :P

0 for 3 this round. Black Tuesday has been unkind to us.
But yet, I am at peace, for I have learned from my numerous errors how to correctly compose a query (I hope). Unfortunately, the serenity is fated to end, as I have a pair ready to go. :\

An acceptance has made its way to Castle Caralya!

Congratulations Anson. I'm 0-4, not an unexpected result. Still have two in the hopper for next time, maybe more by the time the meeting rolls around.

Same here. I hope I've learned how to write a good query (though not a successful one, at least, not yet). The entire experience has taught me patience and discipline.

That said, I actually wrote out one of my submissions (my favorite one of the lot), a 1st level wilderness trek. I plan on using it for my own campaign, but I wouldn't mind sharing it with anyone who is interested, I could use the feedback. Anyone interested can email me at tmeagon@hotmail.com.

Well best get crackin Shroomy, from what James hinted at above, another approval meeting may be coming up as early as next week.

Is this true!?!?! Inquiring submitters want to know. :-)

Quite possibly, but the question is will they be reviewing all submissions up to that date? It's been about 4 months since the last meeting (though that seems to be the average, and the guys were all caught up then I believe).

I sure hope so.

Hunter

Just sent in my sixth one for this round?!?!? Going back to 11/17 up to today 1/11. And, they may have lost my one that I had hopes on from last summer. I will resend it next week probably. I'm not sure when the cutoff date would be. Using the logic that I was using before of about every three months being 'the date'...the cutoff would have been around 12/08/05, but who knows?

So, question for those that got 'resubmits'...what does that look like? Something like, "we like the BBEG, but put it in a bakery setting"? Or, "trade out those goblins with rogue levels and make them terrasques"?

Or is it a plot by Mr Jacobs to see if he can fill his email inbox?

Basically it means you get to resubmit the prop with a little extra "this is what the PCs actually do in this adventure" section (at least the two resubmits I have done looked like that). Sometimes it is also that they like certain elements of a plot, but want to see the entire prop reworked (I had one of these too).

Mr. Jacobs' inbox sees enough traffic. I see to that. I'm sure before he even opens his account he's thinking "What in the hell does Nick want now?" :-)

Not quite. I do have a few in, though.

You better get crackin', GGG. I still want that cataclysmic, steel cage matchup someday. Until then, we compete for queries.

- Chris

P.S. For those that heard back today, congrats and condolences. Also, good luck to everyone in the next round . . . keep churnin' 'em out.
