Nice Supplements

4/5

These four mini-adventures were designed to introduce new players to the Pathfinder Beginner Box by providing short demos at conventions and gaming stores. I didn't encounter them in that context, but, like a lot of people, I've used them as supplements to a home Beginner Box game. New GMs need help, and old GMs get lazy, so extras like this are always appreciated.

"Relics" starts with the PCs meeting with a (to me at least) somewhat shady businessman named Eberius Tauranor. Tauranor hires the PCs to retrieve a valuable item from the mausoleum of an "ailing business contact" who has promised Tauranor any treasure there in exchange for a loan. The item in question is a ceremonial sceptre carried by ancient priests of Aroden! The briefing wasn't very well done, with a poor explanation of what's going on and no information if the PCs ask questions. It comes across very suspicious, and my son (who's 8) assumed Tauranor was a bad guy and thus refused the mission entirely! I think it would have been better to just have the PCs start at the mausoleum, with a handout letter explaining why they're there. Anyway, the mausoleum has an interesting puzzle-based pitfall trap (that might be a bit hard for the GM to keep track of and indicate to the players what is happening). In a nice touch, there are two scepters hidden in the mausoleum: a real one and a fake one, and PCs need to put some clues together to figure out which is which. They then get ambushed by a group of thugs (the Bloody Knuckles) who have (without little explanation) come looking for the sceptre. The PCs have the choice to fight or bluff them, and I like it when there are options in encounters like this. Overall, "Relics" is okay but not great.

"Ruins" has a much better briefing, as the PCs get to interact with and ask questions from Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch in the Rusty Dragon. She sends the PCs off to northern Varisia in search of an ancient Thassilonian ruin dedicated to the Runelord Xanderghul. There, the PCs have to persuade an illusory guardian to let them pass in order to retrieve a Sihedron medallion. It's a nice little foreshadowing for players if they eventually play Rise of the Runelords. As with "Relics", the PCs are ambushed after retrieving the treasure--this time, by a group of goblins. There is some backstory explanation for why the goblins are there, but the PCs will never be privy to it so I think the encounter probably comes across as somewhat random and possibly confusing.

"Terrors" has the PCs sent by Heidmarch from Sandpoint to Galduria to investigate strange rumors of lights and creatures seen near the town's graveyard. Unlike the other demos, this one has several avenues for role-playing and investigation, and does a really nice job (in a necessarily compact way) of describing Galduria. The backstory to what's happening is a bit involved, involving bandits, a waylaid witch, a stolen necromantic item, a foolish ritual, and the walking dead! I really liked the magical item, the candle of night, and how smart PCs could use it to make the only combat encounter much easier. I think this was the best adventure in the lot, as it shows that RPGs aren't just about dungeon crawls.

"Tomes" finishes the group, and I enjoyed its setting (Korvosa's Acadamae) since I had just run a module set there and had the appropriate map pack. The PCs are sent from Sandpoint to Korvosa to purchase a spellbook that one of the Acadamae's lecturers wants to sell. But when they get to the lecturer's office, they find the woman bloodied and unconscious. A rival lecturer has sent a well-disguised mimic to try to find the book, and it's hiding as a lectern! I ran this for my son (with some ally NPCs), and I can testify that mimics are pretty tough for Level 1 PCs! Overall, it was solid.

I'm not 100% sure why these demos were in such a hurry to get the PCs out of Sandpoint, as I think they could have instead built on the adventure possibilities there without handwaving hundreds of miles of travel. As short convention demos, it was probably fine, but as bonus stories for home games, I found them very hard to tie into the campaign. On the other hand, free is free and beggars can't be choosers--plus, with some changes in detail and setting, they're not too hard to adopt. I'm glad these were produced, and I wish similar ones were done for the Starfinder Beginner Box.

Great Scenarios For New Busy GMs

5/5

Probably my favorite idea Paizo has come up with yet. Giving new GMs a couple more adventures to put under their belts gives them experience and familiarity to the game, and gives them more examples on which to build their own campaigns. I plan to run these with my Beginner Box group soon.

Great First Adventures

5/5

This is a great into to get people, young and old, interested in playing Pathfinder. I highly recommend also downloading the Kid's Track, even if you will be running for older players. It helps you organize how you are going to explain the rules to brand new players.

I have recently GM'd these scenarios multiple times. I did a practice run on my parents (folks in their 50's who have never gamed) and ran for multiple tables of brand new gamers at a recent convention. All my players loved it. Each scenario is brief but has room for players to get "into" it, either by role playing or asking many questions of the GM. Each seems to focus on a few different areas of the system and represent what you typically do in Pathfinder: a mini dungeon crawl, investigation, role play, ruin exploration, etc.

The demos are supposed to be run for up to 4 Beginner Box pregens but it's pretty easy to change the size of the player group if needed. I ran 2 people through the demos with an NPC Kyra to help them out. I also ran a table of 7 by printing additional 1st level pregens.

If you are planning on recruiting at a large event or just want to get your friends into Pathfinder you should check these demos out.

Excellent Introduction to Pathfinder RPG and Society OP

5/5

This series of 4 encounters is very well written and gives a colorful introduction to what the Pathfinder system has to offer. Each Bash Demo focuses of a small set of skills and aspects of the system.

The skills & aspects covered include: Traps, Diplomacy, Knowledge Skills, Hidden Caches, Hidden Enemies, Puzzles, Stabilizing Wounded Characters and Damage Reduction. Also each includes one challenging combat.

The Bash Demos are also very versatile. While they are written for the Beginner Box set which has a smaller less complex rule set than the Core rulebook they can easily be run with the Pathfinder Society PreGenerated Characters.

Recently at a local Con we ran the Bash Demos 12 times over the 3 day weekend including 1 on Sunday. I estimate conservatively that 80% of the people that played the Bash Demos were new to Pathfinder in one fashion or another. Many hadn't role played in a long time, so we used the Beginner Box PreGens exclusively.

A large portion, I'd guess over half, continued to play in one or more Society Scenarios over the weekend and wanted more information on playing locally. The Beginner Box Bash Demos provide a great balanced introduction to the Pathfinder RPG and running them alongside a Society event is a valuable addition to any Con.

look good but missing content

4/5

PZO1119D-Ruins.pdf is missing content at the end of the module.

"Any PC who
elaborates on the battle with the goblins receives only a slow,"

That is it.

Nice demos. would like to point out though that the text in the conclusion section of the Ruins pdf is cut off:

"Any PC who elaborates on the battle with the goblins receives only a slow,"

And then nothing.

What do they receive? A slow spell? A slow round of applause? A slow yawn? A slow, cooked roast followed with some delicious pie?

Knowing goblins they would get a slow cooked dog as a special meal.

I see what you did there.

Actually the context is they're regaling someone else about their battle with the goblins. yum yum.

Rant about bad mechanics implementation:
"convincing them to take
the fake scepter and leave the PCs in peace if the new arrivals
can be made indifferent (they begin the encounter with an
attitude of hostile)"

DC 35 Diplomacy check. DC 25 for Hostile, add 5 to go to unfriendly, 5 to go to indifferent. I actually don't even own the Beginner's Box (thumbing through a free product oh yeah) so I don't know the leader's Cha mod, but I assume it's over 0 so the DC just goes up

Can you guys stop putting this in your adventures? Lots of this hostile->indifferent dynamic going on in the last year. It's an impossible check for most parties unless they specifically have a diplomancer character. Even as a 10th level diplomancer bard with feats and magic items raising diplomacy (feat for +4 to perform, circlet of persuasion) I still only had a +24, making this a success only on an 11. For a 10th level character!

Sorry to rant.

I just saw that as well.

It looks like no answer so far, eh?

BTW, what is the recommended order to play these 4 in, if any?

Also, how would they fit in if playing them with the other available modules?

"Skeleton's Crypt" (BBHH) > “Black Fang’s Dungeon" (BBGMG) > "The Deadly Mine" (PZO1119GME.pdf) > ??

Am I missing any? Thanks.

Sorry for the last sentence being cut off due to a formatting error. We'll get that fixed in short order. Thanks for the heads up.

These four can be played in any order. It depends on how you want to shape your game as a GM. Do you want to start in a city and move outward to the surrounding country side or vice versa? When we were designing these, we wanted to make sure you could use them in any order you see fit for your campaign.

Great!

But in the meanwhile can you please throw us a bone and finish the sentence while we wait for reformatting? :)

There is no Cert, They are reported for GM purposes only to count towards total games GMed.

Basically if you have a Beginner Box Demo at a Store or Convention you can report a Beginner Box Bash Demo for PFS GMed for every 4 hours you ran the Demo.

There is no Character credit or Boons.

Though Some Rare Demos sponsored by Paizo may have some Boons.

Would anyone mind listing the recommended maps/map packs for each bash? Currently stock at work sith only my smart phone. I don't want to go all the way home just to see what they are to just go back out to by them.
