A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 3-6.

Venture-Captain Amari Li has called for assistance in establishing new Pathfinder lodges throughout Tian Xia! The mountainous island of Kayajima, in northwestern Minkai, would be an ideal site, as it sits atop a convergence of powerful—though long-dormant—ley lines that could offer valuable protection for a future lodge. Rather than lay claim to the island by force, the Pathfinders must treat with the island's animals and spirits, securing their blessing for a ritual to restore the island's magic and establish the newest Pathfinder lodge.

Good intro to PF2e

So, after 30+ years of AD&D, 2nd edition, 3rd edition, 5e, and PF1, I used this scenario as the introduction to PF2e for myself and my players. Not surprisingly, it took us much longer than expected to get through the scenario (we ran this at low tier), but we all enjoyed it and they’re looking forward to running another session in PF2e. By that score alone it was a resounding success! Please don’t read further if you wish to avoid spoilers.

The setting is a nice change of pace, and my two players of Asian descent loved this as an introduction to Tian Xia, as everything else we’ve run so far has been in the Inner Sea. Their eyes lit up at the encounter with the kodama. The NPCs are pretty engaging.

The scenario itself is easy to run and consists of a completely unnecessary preliminary combat, 3 tasks (1 social, 1 skill-based, and 1 combat) followed by a final combat encounter. The skills-based task was a letdown, as I’m not a fan of skill-based tasks that are overly programmed. It’s literally just a series of forest encounters with different obstacles and skills checks to overcome them, with no real room for player creativity. On the other hand, another task has a very basic obstacle to overcome (a gap in a mountain path with a broken bridge) and the typical hilarity ensued as the Party used different skills to make it across. Yes, it was skill-based, but they had to think of how to use their skills.

The final combat is quite challenging and the single opponent is both tough and a heavy hitter, and just very cool looking. Due to some bad tactics on my part they did manage to back it into a corner and they ended up just trading blows until they finally killed it. 2 PCs ended up at 0 hp, although the remaining 2 PCs defeated the opponent and saved their companions.

Overall, a very strong scenario with just a couple of weak spots (the preliminary combat with boars and the skill-based task).

Pathfinder : Kukuha and the Birth of Three gates lodge!!

5/5

I am proud to say that I was probably the first Japanese to run this scenario, and it was great.

long sentence:

I love paizo's oriental scenarios, the tragedy of the chase in The Haunting of Hinojai, the Akira Kurosawa vibe from Red Harvest, the Clash in Kaimuko Wood where I participated as a blind Aasimar Paladin... (I never thought such a coincidence would happen!)

In the 2nd edition, I had a great time improvising and incorporating the Kingdom of Zao setting into the scenario in the undead route of Lost on the Spirit Road.

As for this scenario, which is the main topic... As soon as I read it, I knew it was a combination of Princess Mononoke and Doraemon : Nobita and the Birth of Japan!

Role-playing Masuhei, an oyster fisherman and retired Pathfinder, was a joy. sakakabe is a place where everyone knows Amara Li's favorite restaurant, Kiniro Kyomai, but the moment players learned that the local specialty is oysters, they started talking about eating oyster dishes after their adventure.

The main stage of the adventure, kayajima, is named after Kayanohime in Japanese mythology, which is also called Nozuchikami, or wild spirit. Kayanohime is also called Nozuchikami, or Wild Spirit, and her husband is called Ooyamatsumi, or Kami, originally a mountain god, but with deep ties to the sea, as his head office is located on an island. For these reasons, I thought the name "Kayajima" was an appropriate placement.

As has been said in previous reviews, yes. Our playgroup had played Devil at the Crossroads just before, so our first encounter was exactly the same. But the situation itself, fighting a wild boar in the woods, contributed to incorporating the atmosphere of the motif of this scenario.

The interaction with Kukuha, my new friend, is also excellent. She is an expert in ley lines, and the scene where she sets up the warding in the final battle was a lot of fun. I hope you will continue to publish scenarios where we interact with her in new lodges in the future. Just a map to give us a bird's eye view of the entire Kayajima would have been perfect.

The part where they go to the Forest's Heart Gate was totally Princess Mononoke. The interaction with Kodama is fun, hilarious, and the final scene is touching.

Aojimitsu, whom you meet at the Wrathful Tide Gate, was adored by the players due to the illustrations and his personality.
He is like Dorako in Draemon.

At Soruseiji Peak, the decision to cross the bridge seemed a bit redundant. It might break the tempo of the game, so you need to be careful. Griffon, who is to be saved from WIND MALEVOLENT (kamaitachi) here, is in Doraemon's position of Guri!
When we played, there was an ORACLE of TSUUKIYO, so she placed the diamonds at the top shrine.

The final battle with KAYAJIMA GUARDIAN DOGU, when using Ley Line Surge, I played a clip of the scene where Tsuchidama releases the shockwave in Doraemon:Nobita and the Birth of Japan. The scene was greatly enhanced by the island creatures coming to join the fight... The encounter ended earlier than expected due to a series of critical hits by the players. Completely bad dice roll! Thanks to that, the encounter ended before Aojimitsu came to join in and he sulked: .... That's cute, though!

When the adventure was over, I played the ending music for Nobita and the Birth of Japan, and the PCs enjoyed oysters at Sakakabe with Masuhei as promised, only a little disappointed that Kukuha stayed on the island and could not eat oysters with them.

This scenario was a wonderful adventure, the atmosphere, setting, and encounters were all exciting, and I can't wait for Minkai's setting book in 2e! Biggest kudos to the author, Adrian Ng. Thank you!

Excellent adventure!

4/5

This is a masterpiece of an adventure!
The setting, the NPC's, the boss battle!

A very solid adventure for both a roleplay and fighting oriented groups. Definitely on of the best of 2E scenarios.

The Good spoilers:

Spoiler:
The NPC's! Rarely if ever have I seen such a lovely bunch of adorable coolness!

Kukuha, the Kodama, Aojimitsu, the griffons! The end boss dogu!
I loved them all, and so did my players!

Only one thing keeps me from giving it full 5 stars:

The one bad spoilery thing:

Spoiler:
The boars in the beginning!
Why is there a boar encounter here? This is a second scenario where there is just a random boar attack in the beginning.
Boars are cool an' all but no.

The encounter serves no purpose for the plot. It is just a filler and an unnecessary timesink.

The scenario itself offers so many wonderful roleplaying opportunities and plot relevant and cool encounters (fight and social) that easily fill the 4 hour playtime and more!

5/5

Time has not diminished my affection for this scenario, which became a favorite of mine instantly upon release and continues to remain so. The flavor and atmosphere are fantastic, with enough support for the GM to add their own little embellishments. It flows naturally, everything that happens fits, and the encounters are fun to run. There's something very special about this one for me.

Good Balance of Encounter Types

5/5

I found this adventure very flavorful and think there is a good balance of encounter types. It was fun to GM.

Oh hey these got the fancy covers too!

I do think that tengu's body looks bit too human like(I kinda like how most of 1e tengu art either had inhuman posture or were less thin and lean and more... Poofy) but thats more of personal preference, it is a good picture. I also notice its more of folklore tengu reference costume wise

This sounds fun

So this is in a "folder" named "Year of Corruption's Reach." Meanwhile, the cover art says "Year of Corruption's Grasp." Just curious: Which one is correct? I'm guessing Grasp -- not only because it is art rather than text, but also because it's better -- but confirmation would be appreciated.

I guess it's a question of whether the Society's reach will exceed its grasp.

I hope this mission doesn't unlock tengu specific background or something :'D Since this does seem like something I'd like to play if I had more acp for tengu character and got them to level 3

Got to play this during Gen Con, and I just want to say that the descriptive text in it was beautiful. Great work, Adrian!

Anyone have difficulties with the last boss fight on this one? I'm running this for a group and between the high AC and hardness, they seem incapable of hurting the boss. Perhaps I'm running Hardness incorrectly? Hardness 8 = take 8 dmg off any attack or magic correct? After three rounds, the party has only done about 6 dmg total to this boss and with their challenge points, the boss is supposed to have 115 hp. Yikes, I dont want this to end in a TPK. Any advice?
