Greetings, I was just curious, I had a simple thing come up in a game I'm about to run. The character background is a classic, an orc raid resulted in a raped mother and thus a half orc (the player) was born. Then I got to wondering... are orcs plentiful in the region they are considering being from?

It's a question along the lines of "Oh I'll just buy a new [ insert magic item here ] in the city" can they actually find the item in the city or are not no magical wal-marts around? Are orcs so plentiful in the world that they might raid anywhere from the obvious Hold of Belkzen to Andoran to Osirion to... well you get my point. Where do these classic beasts roam Golarion? I suppose I could consult my classic monsters revisited and see if it mentions anything there...

This same question could be posed for any creature. Or should I simply leave it up to my discretion. I just wanted to know if there was an answer out there already.

The way I look at it, any place that has moderate weather that is near to mountains, can have orc, goblin, and kobold problems.

Ya know I have wondered that too. In the more civilized areas, I just cannot imagine that bands or orcs, goblins, kobolds, trolls, and every other bad guy race is just roaming about everywhere. If that were the case then human cities would be isolated fortresses almost always besieged by something...

So the question that is where are they playing? Varisia's towns/cities seem to take care of themselves and they're certainly not walled up.. but then again look what happened to Sandpoint with the goblins.

Lots of human "barbarian" tribes wandered pretty far afield to raid in the real world, and they didn't have shaman that could cast all sorts of food and water producing spells, or divinations that could help them figure out where to strike, or obscuring mist or darkness to help them hide once they were done with their raids.

Hmmm, fair enough, well where they're playing isn't as important as where the attack was staged. He's thinking about being from Darkmoon Vale (the only source books he had on Pathfinder were the free players guides which are set in Varisia and it's a play by post so I can't exactly lend them my copy of the Gazetteer). I've yet to be able to read through the Darkmoon Vale supplement and he's thinking of being from that region. Is it orc infested or more prone to other things?

I guess I'll just need to read more. I have the resources (at least the monster book, I hate reading things on the computer screen, messes with my eyes and I've yet to receive the physical copy of my gazetteer) so I'll give them a look.

Growing up in the vale doesn't mean thats where the attack happened either, the trauma of the attack could have forced the mother to move away from the familiar sights and people. and since the Vale is more known for its kobold problem than orcs (at least at this stage) it is a good place for her to go if she wants to avoid reminders...

Hmmm, that is true, though the games have begun with the other background in mind. I had it so that the half-orc perished in a logging accident which kept Bella (Laurel) from moving.
