Top-Quality, Inspiring Product

5/5

This is a fantastic, ultra high-quality, professional product. It is the first output from Legendary Games, the new brain-child from Necromancer Games’ Clark Peterson, a man known for leading the way in terms of high-quality 3rd Party publisher quality.

I am a person who generally eschews 3rd party material, in favor of sticking to the core elements, first with WotC in the 3rd edition days, and now with Paizo for Pathfinder.

Clark’s return to the fold, with the reputation he comes with, has forced me to rethink this rule. Combine his pedigree with the talent he lined up for Legendary games, and it was a no-brainer. The people he has writing for him and literally the people who write the official Paizo products, including their stellar Adventure Path installments.

The Treasury of the Macabre does not disappoint. From the innovative use of the PDF format to the layout to the art to the writing, this is a top-notch product that was worth every penny and more.

The magic items present were designed to be easily inserted in a “gothic-horror adventure path” (aka Carrion Crown), but I have already found a home for a number of them in my homebrew Pathfinder game.

The flavor and creativity of the items is breathtaking, touching on all of the genres featured in Carrion Crown (ghosts/haunts, constructs/alchemy, werewolves, Lovecraftian Horror, vampires, and liches).

Favorites include the Sanguinary Torque (an anti-vampire necklace that turns the wearer’s blood to holy water), the Spinelash (a whip which deforms the victims skeleton, entangling them in their own bones), and The Horn of the Deep Ones (an instrument that will summon Skum to your aid, but runs the rist of transforming its sounder into one of the grotesque creatures).

Do yourself a favor and pick this up. It might as well be an official Pathfinder product. It’s that good.

Treasury of the Macabre by Legendary Games

This product is 17 pages long. It starts with a cover, credits, ToC and forward. (4 pages)

Macabre Treasures (10 pages)
This is what they are calling a plug and play. They are products made for the Pathfinder AP line. This one is for there most recent gothic horror AP or as we all know it Carrion Crown. Of course it could be used with out it as well. It is just a collection of gothic horror style magic items. There is a total of 29 magic items and one artifact. The magic items run in cost/power from 600gp to 58,000gp. A few of my personal favorites.
Anatomist's knife – other than being a cunning blade that cause bleed dmg, it also gives a bonus on heal checks.
Spinelash – a bone keen whip that on a critical it deforms the targets bones on a failed safe permanently.
Cruciform Icon – a Holy symbol that can hold vampires at bay as a standard action and who's touch causes fear and suppressed the vamps healing for awhile.
Guardian Moppet – It grants a save bonus vs hexes, protects against child scent hex completely. If the owner is a child, it can also detect one type of threat the child fears and will alert the child to the coming danger. It also cast sanctuary on the child when the danger first gets in range.
Séance Candle – depending how long it burns it can grant knowledge checks about a individual, or speak with dead, or cast augry, divination on the individual. The candle attracts spirits and ghost. If used near a haunt it makes them easier to interact with, gives a social bonus. But also makes the haunt more powerful.

It ends with a OGL, writer bios, and back cover. (3 pages)

Closing thoughts. The art work is color and pretty good. Editing and layout was good I didn't notice any errors. It is a pretty PDF and very extensive bookmarked. It comes with a black and white print friendly version as well but both are in landscape format. The items are inspired by classic horror, from vampires, witches, werewolves, ghosts, to weird science and aliens from beyond. I liked most of the items, there was a few I was meh about. Not because they was bad but just cause they didn't appeal to me personally.

I personally love magic items that go outside the norm. The Guardian Moppet is a perfect example of ones I love. I wish there had been more way outside the box thinking. My only critics of the product is, lack of portrait for the print friendly version and the back cover is hard to read. I don't know why but the upcoming products listed on the back cover is hard to read in my PDF but none of the rest of the PDF is. So what's my rating? Well for the quality, cost, content etc. I am going to give this one a 4 star review. Good and worth the money but I think it could have been better if they pushed the bar a little more.

Trust me, I'm a Succubus.

Edit: After thinking about this I wanted to add a comment. I am a huge fan of Gothic Horror and as such I tend to be a harder graded on the topic, as I have high expectations for it.

Also the Electrshock Guntlets, IIRC.
I just looked through my copy and I don't see an error of that magnitude. The Treasury of the Macabre includes an electroshock glove and a gauntlet of staveguarding, and I didn't spot any typos on a quick proofread of them. Also did a search for "Electrshock" and "Guntlets" for the entire document and turned up nothing. Can you cite a reference for that one? I'd be curious to know how that got past a spellchecker.

I'm typing on my tablet, what's your excuse, Spicer? ;-)

I was wrong. The Electroshock Gloves (not Gauntlets and certainly not Guntlets) are for the hands slot.

Correct. And that entry does cite "hands" for its slot, so I think we're okay there unless you see something different.

The other items mentioned earlier list a slot of "-" when they clearly should have been "head" or "hands" instead. I didn't get a chance to help the team out with as thorough a proofreading as I would have liked when the product went through development. Even so, most of the items are pretty self-explanatory on what slot they take up. I'd have been much more worried if typos like "Electrshock" and "Guntlets" had gotten through...hence, my concern.

As for you and your tablet, you should proofread better before posting so you don't give me a heartattack... ;-)

Seriously, though, thanks to everyone for the feedback and extra sets of eyes. It'll remind us to be as thorough as we can on our future stuff. In fact, I've got the next product in the pipeline coming up with the pregen PCs and I'm expectedly nervous about how many errors might have crept in. I always get that way when it comes to stat-blocks...

I apologise for any cardiac problems I may have contributed to. Looking forward to the next product.

Paul, Neil's near cardiac arrest aside, thank you for holding us to the highest standard. It's what we want.

You know, as it is getting closer to RPG Superstar time again this year I started to think about our Treasury of the Macabre.

You guys who have entered Superstar or payed attention to the contest likely know Jason and Neil and Boomer from RPG Superstar. You know how tough it is to make even ONE item that is superstar quality.

Think about this--Jason wrote all 30 of these items for the Treasury in about a week. Now, some are good examples of good, serviceable items that would make a magic item book (and did) and may not be superstar quality, but there are a couple in there that would easily make the cut to top 32 in my view. That is scary, that a guy could make that many in one week. Jason is just a totally amazing talent. Sure, he got some feedback from the Legendary Games Design Team, but these were his seeds, his ideas.

So I was thinking, maybe I should start a thread to discuss an analyze the items from the Treasury to see which ones you all think are Superstar quality? Interesting.

So, should I start such a thread? [not trying to sell the product, just a fun discussion from those who might have bought it and I know a good number of you did]

Let me know what you think please. :)

Clark

Reviewed here and sent to GMS magazine! Cheers and keep up the good work - I still think it's incredibly awesome that Necromancer Games spawned both Frog God Games and Legendary Games. Double the awesomeness!

I hope the other scheduled LG-supplements for Carrion Crown come soon!

I guess Necromancer is kind of like an ooze. You hit it and instead of dying, it just splits into more... ;-)

Two side-trek adventures are already in process. From what I understand, the manuscripts, art, and maps are now in the hands of Tim, our capable layout artist.

If you're looking for more RIGHT NOW, you can check out a little something I penned for LG called: Gothic Heroes

Already added to my cart, but it will have to wait until next month - my RPG-budget for October is spent.

I'm totally looking forward to your other offerings...

Nice review End. i see you liked it a bit more than me. For me I think I went in with certain desires, since I am a huge fan of gothic horror and it just missed for me a little.

I am also looking forward to several of there other products.

Really proud of all the reviews. Thanks everyone for your reviews and feedback!

Can the Horn of the Deep Ones be used an unlimited number of times, or is it supposed t be 1/day, 3/day or something similar?

Just reviewed it myself. It's a great piece of work!

Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully once Superstar winds up we'll be able to push some more products out of the pipe where they've been waiting.

Push, already! I'm eager to get my mitts on the side-treks!

Scarab Sages Contributor, RPG Superstar 2008 Top 4, Legendary Games

You and me both, bro. I'd like people to see all the cool things thus far in the line. The side-treks are the only things that are really tied to the AP itself (and even those could certainly be used separately as their own fun mini-adventures). The rest of the product line could be used for anything... which is of course intentional. We want more sales! :)

Just a bump for the product. I know I reviewed it before, but finally got it into the game. Slid the Tomb Tapper and Electroshock Glove into The Haunting of Harrowstone

THoH:
The Tapper in the Splatterman's cache to explain in part how he set up the riot, and the glove into the guards cache in the chamber with the Mosswater Maurader, put it next to the healing potions in the first aid kit.

Both were received as interesting and novel items. Especially the glove which my paramedic (IRL) player really dug.

Very cool. That's exactly what this product was meant to do...i.e., give you the means to introduce a little extra stuff into your gothic-themed campaign. Specifically, all this material works really well for the entire Carrion Crown AP. I'm glad to see a testimonial of how this product worked at the gaming table. Thanks, Galnörag.

Could you do the printer friendly version like the Tomes of Ancient Knowledge? In tomes the items are in color with the background color removed but in Treasury the items are in b&w. The items look so good in color it is a waste not to be able to print them in color.

I guess that is a no.

More like a "we sorta lost track of the thread." We'll check into modifying the PDFs once we get the current products out the door.
