Guns & Elder Gods, Destinies & Love, Gnomes & Shoggoths-- what's not to love?

5/5

Hellllooooo KQ#13-- let me say, you're all grown up sexy. This starts year four for Kobold Quarterly, and the cover is something gorgeous-- a pair of tastefully shaded dryads in a jade tone, surrounded by usual set of forest suspects. I found the phrase, "the Switzerland of the Edition Wars" especially apt, but I digress. For this review, I'm looking at the PDF issue, not the print.

After a trio of full page ads (which I liked, honestly. It gives the magazine more of an old Dragon feel), we get the Table of Contents. The article selection only gives a hint as to the editions of the material, so folks looking for those easy to identify icons with the titles are going to have to dig deeper into the magazine, because while they are handily at the upper left corner of each piece. Let me save you the math, though:

6 for Pathfinder
5 for 4E
1 for Dragon Age
1 system neutral article on the Zobeck Campaign setting of Open Design
2 Game Design
1 Editorial
1 Interview with Chris Pramas
1 Set of Fiction Book Reviews
A pair of new comics from Stan!

Which gives a fairly equal distribution of material-- though, to be fair, the KQ staff has always said they publish what they're provided. I'm holding out hope for an Ars Magica article.

Regardless of your side on the current detente, there is a truckload of good stuff in here. Two nice maps, a wad of items for 4E or Pathfinder and good advice on romance stories make for some very interesting material.

Although, it's fair to say that this helping might not be for everyone. Those who don't like guns in their sword and sorcery will find the arquebusier article a misfire. Those not looking for a horror tinge to their 4E high fantasy won't need a sanity check for Aeryn Rudel's Lovecraftian Gods. I found the shoggoth ecology great and full of options for foiling the player at your table who memorized everything down to table 14-3, wagon wheel options. In my opinion, though, the gem of the issue is the "Guide to Sex and Romantic Subplots in Fantasy Adventure Gaming." Mario Podeschi is no stranger to KQ, and if this article is any indication, we'll be seeing a lot more. He talks about hooks, shallow PCs and NPCs, episodic appearances, the sticky subject of intercourse even a primer on what to do when the table is divided on the matter of romance and PCs-- everything a GM could ask for when incorporating this aspect into a game.

Overall, I have to say that Kobold Quarterly continues to fulfill its destiny as the spiritual successor of Dragon. The art is great, the production is very professional and the editing is solid. They're also listening to feedback and incorporating what they can-- as evidenced by the article-edition icons. They even allow you to download your PDFs straight from the site if you've somehow misplaced your copy. If you haven't picked up an issue, this is a fantastic place to start.

Disclaimer: This PDF issue was provided for review purposes, though I am a subscriber and occasional contributer to KQ/Open Design.

And even though some of it is nominally labeled as 4e, a good chunk of that stuff isn't necessarily *only* 4e.

For example, the Alternate Objectives: Capture the Flag article, while on the surface a 4e article, really didn't have a lot that was 4e-specific ... the concepts could be applied to any of the D&D family.

Hey! Hey! Hey!

The man's made up his mind! Don't go telling him about the goodness therein-- *he knows* it's all trash and won't be swayed by your forked silver tongue!

We all know that 4E games must be run with purely DDI provided content or they send that gnome after you, the one with the lisp, to stick his badger in your face and ask for his loot. It's embarrassing. Last time I had to give him all my marshmallows and my only phillips head screwdriver.

No one ever gets good ideas for one game by reading the material from another. Nosir. That's wrongbadfun. Then come in the black helicopters and they take your games from you. No one wants that.

I too hate 4th ed, but I will be getting this and many other issues of KQ- I have friends here that are published in it, and this month's topics are way, WAY too good for me to ignore.

Actually, I have all the way up to around issues 9 or 10. I really enjoyed some of the articles by Wolfgang and other established writers. But, my group doesn't play that often, so the Paizo PF stuff is more than enough for me these days. Skipping the partly 4E content of KQ is just a better cost-to benefit situation.

"The Switzerland of the Edition Wars"
Awesome tagline. lol

Picked it up today and, while not a fan of a new class for every little shtick, I am excited about more support and options for firearms friendly PCs. Will read it on the commute home from work!

It was a very quick effort; but it most certainly was also a team effort, bringing together material created by a team of creative individuals.

I haven't had a chance to really get at the meat of the article yet, but I did highly appreciate both giving thought to, and then EXPLAINING those thoughts in the article, how to balance firearms and archery.

Cappadocius, I'll be looking forward to your comments.

And glad you liked the "Design Notes". I think that's just force of habit from Open Design projects now!

we can cut it a lot of slack. I love it! And I loathe 4e. Anybody who doesnt get it just because 1/3 of the mag is 4e is cutting off their nose to spite thier face

This article was the main reason I resubscribed earlier today after I was paid, even though I really didn't have the spare money for it at this point.
When I read about the Tengu article at the end of Issue 12 I was elated. Now I'm disappointed. You really shouldn't advertise something if it's not set in stone that it can be delivered. :/

On a slightly related note, I found this editions preview of the next edition quite entertaining.

Why? Don't have my PDF available right now, maybe because you have another article in the hopper / accepted?

I actually have two articles in the hopper but neither one has been accepted yet. But thats not what I found entertaining.

There's more to the preview but this gives you a taste of how it was written:

Yes, the biggest issue of the year is the Summer GenCon Indy special issue! It will be huge! It will be packed with greatness for Pathfinder RPG and much more 4th Edition content than this issue! It will feature sparkling wit and incisive, madly amazing game design! You cannot resist it!

Ok, we really have no idea what’s in it yet. Here’s our best guess based on what we are holding in the slush pits right now.

• An Ecology of some kind of Monster or Animal. Details? Look, six of these things are prowling the slush pile right now, and any one of Them could tear a kobold beastmaster limb from limb. So unless you are volunteering to sort them out… Ask again later.

The Exchange Kobold Press

That's a remarkably accurate view of what the editors know about the next issue 3 months in advance.

That preview art is usually accurate, though.

I do remember a slight smile when I read that announcement ;>

Ah, the tissue of lies which is the "Upcoming issue!" :D I've let out a whoop of excitement thinking I'd have a credit there before, only learn that the article was left to splash obscenely in the pools of the Slush Pile.

It's good times, but you've got to think, this went to printer weeks ago, and so it depended on what was available then...where as queries could have been coming in all last month and this month for consideration. And if that tengu article's any good-- we'll likely see it, because ecologies do well. I wouldn't be too spun up about it...

I had that experience as well, thinking the article would be selected, then another article, touching the same subject, took its place.

That other article was slightly better, so it was the right call, but still ;<

I hate parallel development!

I'm the person who wrote the tengu article Flash, and I'm also partially to blame for why it was removed. You see, I sent Wolfgang the tengu article a few months before issue 13 was released, then sent him the shoggoth ecology a month or two later after the first article was announced in the advertisment. Wolfgang and the editors obviously thought the shoggoth article was a better fit for the issue than the tengu article so made the switch. In essence, I caused my own article to get sidelined.

Hm. You know, there isn't really a good general gaming magazine out there right now, except MAYBE, KINDA Pyramid.

Maybe folks should submit some CoC and MSH and Gamma World and Mazes & Minotaurs and Bunnies & Burrows and Hackmaster stuff to KQ!

I would love some CoC, frankly, as the Red Eye of Azathoth project has been nothing if not 100% purely awesome Cthulhu mainline black tar goodness.

I am also not averse to queries for Savage Worlds Fantasy Companion, the Dresden Files RPG, possibly Mouseguard.

Gamma World 4E, as long as Bruce Cordell or Jim Ward writes it...

How exactly do make the move from KQ to Pathfinder? I think they're both great names, but it's kobolds that are small but fierce, not pathfinders.

Friend, these are not exactly the best kinds of posts for someone new here to jump in and make.

Paizo has nothing to do with Kobold Quarterly magazine. It is produced by a completely different company - Paizo simply offers the issues for sale through it's store.

KQ ( a great magazine, by the way) is named as a kind of homage to Dragon magazine. Small but fierce is simply a fun way of saying that the mag is small compared to Dragon in it's glory days BUT it still is a good mag and hopes to be worthy of it's "name sake" so to speak.

Welcome to the boards by the way ... And maybe try to dial the needless negativity back a bit in the future

I wouldn't worry. It is clear to me now that he just came here to make me laugh; he just hasn't found the right forum to post in yet.

What does everyone else think about the Arquebusier class? I want to like it...I really want to play a gunslinger-type character. Not sure about it at first glance, need to re-read more carefully. Standard action to load? The author says it's on par with bowmen, but I'm not sure I agree.

While I don't use the 4E stuff, I understand the logic behind including it. Switzerland is a good place to be when war's a-raging. And there is nothing like the warm spark of kid-like joy you get when you open the mailbox and see the KQ magazine sitting within its white wrapping. That's worth the money right there.

Have to say, love the Shaggoth article. I am amazed that this mag always seems to have at least ONE thing I really need for my games, and having PF stats on Shaggoths will come in real handy in one of my games as the players begin to enter my hommage to the Lovecraftian masterpiece, At the Mountains of Madness.

The Exchange

I'll complain quietly to myself about something. No one needs respond.

Spoiler:
The amount of open content in both the magazine and the website is depressingly small. Almost nothing is re-usable, and what is is only a very small subset. I get that its a business, I really do, but with so little of it being open content, it can't be reproduced anywhere. Seems counter to the level of openness of Paizo and Pathfinder and the OGL in general. I guess I just love so much about the magazine and the site that I get frustrated that I just.. can't.. reproduce almost any of it. I'm actually even considering not renewing my subscription over it. Ok, that's all.
