I had an adventure that the group had to retrieve a holy book from thieves that contained info pertinent to the campaign but didn't want it known too early and knew comprehend languages would spoiler it so had book written in code/cipher with hints others had guessed at written in margins to limit what players could learn from the book. I even printed a 'book' with actual adventure text changed by replacing letters of the text with gibberish. The book was a hit cause they had actual info even if they couldn't use it. ![]()
![]() The Core Rulebook gives all the rules for all the (core) classes. So it has all the feats, etc. But if a newbie or intermediate player with say a fighter sees that list of feats and just sees gibberish, the Strategy Guide will say ignore all these feats here cause they don't apply to fighters. Just look at these feats, and these are the ones to pick at 1st level, then if you want sword and board pick from these, if you're going for ranged attacks these feats are good, etc.

![]() They base them on earth-type cultures so the GM can fill in all the little blanks about daily life, dress styles, etc. themselves rather than game designers having to create a 400 page book to give the GM all the details that make this one culture different than anything earth-based. Its a shortcut. If you want something that different you can take the sample they present and change or add what you want or come up with something completely new and off the wall. I prefer a starting idea that i can then modify myself as I have time and desire, but not having to come up with the details on the spot in game is a big deal and using something I have a little knowledge of makes a world of difference (pun intended). ![]()
![]() If I was a 20+ BBEG, I would never get into a fight with a party of PCs and go toe to toe with the fighter with +20 to hit plus feats, magic items, etc. or allow the wizard to cast his 9th level spells without having minions, traps, terrain hazards, ambushes, or whatever to whittle the group down before I would even think of 'meeting' them. So any talk about epic not working because it is foregone conclusion that the fighters automatically hit for a gagillion points and the wizards blast with world-shaking spells and the rogue sneak attacks and instantly slays is not taking into account that epic level players need epic level baddies, not just 10th level evil guy pumped up with hit points. Yes, the players earned those abilities and let them use them all they want, but not on the evil genius that they have been chasing for years. That's what epic should be.
