If folks want to pick back up again, I'm in. Petrahk, given that we seem to have (sadly) lost Velvunk, do you want to give us some acid resistance?

Male Kobold Scholar 16 | HP 129 | AC 26.T17.ff20 | Init +11 | F+18 R+22 W+17; +1 vs spells, spell-like, & poison; +1d4+1 w.Astrology | SR 26, Freedom of Movement, Immd:cancel crit/sneak | Perc+30

"Petrahk! We were just talking about how it would be a shame to face an evil fungus dragon, of all things, without our own dragon ally with us. Your timing is perfect.

"Well, unless you wanted to see some unsplattered froghemoths." He shakes his head at two 8-ton piles of disemboweled frog-goo. "In that case, your timing was a little off.

"They were a site to behold...now mostly just a mess. I don't know that something as dumb as they are would have loot to get excited about...but maybe we'll get lucky and they collect shiny things? Or piles of gear from the erstwhile frogslayers that came before us? Can't hurt to check, I'm sure.

"Anyway, this is Wendel. Wendel, this is Petrahk. She's a good dragon. (Who might look surprisingly like a kobold, but don't let that confuse you.)", Yvra adds with a wink.

"Wendel has suffered tragedy, at the hands of this dragon, who itself serves Arlantia, the corrupt fey who rules this blighted forest. He is leading us to the dragon so that we may avenge his family...and get one step closer to finding Arlantia herself, so that we can hopefully free Gendowyn (who used to rule the Accressiel Court wisely, or so we are told, before being deposed by Arlantia).

"And speaking of the dragon...after we rut around for loot, I suspect it's close enough to Dragon Time that you might as well cast your Mass Resist Acid, Velvunk.

"Which reminds me, sorry to tell you but I strongly suspect this dragon will be immune to your acid, Petrahk, as well as anything eiher a dragon OR a plant might be immune to: from mind-affecting magics, poison, paralysis, stunning. You name it. Oh, and I wouldn't be surprised if it has both it's original acidic breath and some poison powers of some sort."

After we loot (as Petrahk suggests), I suggest:
- Velvunk casts Mass Resist Acid
- Then I resume flying/scouting, slightly ahead of the group.
Sound good?

Yvra arches a scaly eyebrow, still impressed at how quickly Kwiazy and C4N could take down a foe of even this great size and girth.

He attaches a piece of mandrake root to a bolt, squeezes a drop of acid to activate it, and then fires it at the massive froghemoth.

Crossbow, scouted: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (14) + 27 = 41
Damage (bolt, +16d6 sonic: 1d8 + 16d6 ⇒ (1) + (4, 6, 1, 1, 1, 3, 1, 4, 6, 3, 1, 5, 3, 4, 4, 1) = 49 DC 25 Fort or blinded & deafened for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 rounds.

K.Dungeon: 1d20 + 36 ⇒ (16) + 36 = 52

"Careful! They are incredibly powerful, and can swallow you from thirty feet away. Let me see if I can hold them at bay, at least for a few moments."

Yvra reaches into his belt pouch, pulls out a custom tanglefoot bag, and lobs it at the froghemoths.

Improved Tanglefoot (vs touch AC): 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (2) + 23 = 25

DC 26 Reflex save. This hits a square + all squares in 5' radius around it. If they are close enough together, I'll aim for a square between them to get both. Otherwise I'll just aim for the nearer one.
.
When hit, it is entangled (–2 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity) and must make a Reflex save or be glued to the floor, unable to move. Even on a successful save, it can move only at half speed. A flying creature is not stuck to the floor, but it must make a Reflex save or be unable to fly (assuming it uses its wings to fly) and fall to the ground. Improved tanglefoot bags do not function underwater. It can break free by making a Strength check or by dealing 20 points of damage to the goo with a slashing weapon.

After throwing his gooey alchemical creation, Yvra leans left on his gliding apparatus, and attempts to conceal himself in the bushes, at least 30' from the nearest of them.

Stealth (can hide even when observed, not automatically foiled by special senses like blindsight): 1d20 + 35 ⇒ (9) + 35 = 44

Yvra stands frozen still, his eyes scanning left and right.

Will: 1d20 + 17 + 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 17 + (4) + 1 = 25 (additional +1 for 26 total, if vs a spell or SLA.) I'm using 1 daily use of my Astrology bonus for +1d4+1 to the roll. 15/16 remaining.

WHOOPS! I searched upthread for the Quickling's name...and apparently I failed my own INT check. ;-)

"Karburton, thank you for leading us this far. Do you know where exactly the mushroom dragon's lair is? Is it down this path?" Yvra points toward the path that leads to the ruin.

Assuming he says YES (or that he doesn't know), I agree with Kwiazy that we go should forward (with me stealthily 60' in front) on that path.
.
We should pause when we think we're ~5 minutes walk from the entrance to the lair, and have Velvunk cast Mass Resist Acid.
.
Then I'll go scout ahead. If there are no objections, I'll try to trap the entrance to its lair, and then see if we can draw it out.

Stealth: 1d20 + 35 ⇒ (13) + 35 = 48
Survival (if useful, to find the lair): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (15) + 15 = 30
Perception: 1d20 + 30 ⇒ (8) + 30 = 38

"I promise you'll get to smite the mushroom dragon, C4N. And definitely don't try to bite it.

"If I'm right, it'll be more Plant than Dragon...but that makes it more deadly, not less. In addition to its claws, bite, and acid breathe, I wonder if it might not have the ability to create a poisonous cloud. Biting it could poison you rather badly.

"Putting that together with your demon experience...maybe there's a general lesson about not putting strange monsters in your mouth?"

Yvra grins as she flaps along, 6' off the ground, on her flying apparatus.

Male Kobold Scholar 16 | HP 129 | AC 26.T17.ff20 | Init +11 | F+18 R+22 W+17; +1 vs spells, spell-like, & poison; +1d4+1 w.Astrology | SR 26, Freedom of Movement, Immd:cancel crit/sneak | Perc+30

"Hehehehe. After spending most of my youth in Kragodan, in the adoptive home of a Cleric of Folgrit, I sometimes feel I'm more dwarf than kobold." Yvra reaches to pet Lodni Stonetail, the rabbit familiar he inherited from his adoptive mother. "...but after meeting Petrahk and C4N, I feel like maybe I can proudly claim my kobold heritage again. Maybe we kobolds–and you goblins–deserve a new beginning, and a chance to pick a different path."

Then, looking over at C4N as he just about bursts with excitement about the upcoming battle, Yvra adds, "Of course who is more draconic-of-heart than our dear paladin of Apsu?"

Male Kobold Scholar 16 | HP 129 | AC 26.T17.ff20 | Init +11 | F+18 R+22 W+17; +1 vs spells, spell-like, & poison; +1d4+1 w.Astrology | SR 26, Freedom of Movement, Immd:cancel crit/sneak | Perc+30

My intent is to stop when we're even somewhat near the lair and switch to scout mode. (I'll try not to get within Blindsense range (60', typically) but in case I do I have +35 Stealth and:
> Lurker: Unusual perception abilities do not automatically beat your Stealth and require Perception checks as normal

If we can manage it, Yvra's suggestion would be to find the entrance to the lair, lay some traps there, and then make noise so it'll come out to get us. If we get lucky, it'll get stuck in a trap for a bit, and we can corner it.

If I get *really* lucky, my dream would be to lay my traps, then go back behind them and start sniping at it from cover...which I'd imagine might bring it toward me in a hurry! ;-)

No guarantee it'll fail to see the traps, or fail the reflex saves to be effected by them...but a kobold's gotta dream, right?

Then OFF WE GO!!

As Wardel leads them through the blighted forest, Yvra questions him, and listens with interest to anything he will tell them about the mushroom dragon, it's lair, Arlantia, and the blighted forest in general.

At a lull in the conversation, Yvra smiles and says "I understand being needed elsewhere of course...but it's a shame that Petrahk won't be here to help out this time. Fight dragons with dragons, as they say."

Compensates for nothing! wrote:

Anyone have spell called "Telepathokilletic boink"? Is very effective if used on Cani to shoot Cani at enemy! Enemy can not make Acid if dedified quickly!

Menti pops her head out out of Canis head.

He means telekinetic charge, and yes it is effective. He is used to being magically propelled or directly thrown at powerful foes. The Phantom says.

I went weeeee! Right at ugly goat being, and then boinked his space between legs! Very Very effective it was! Cani retells dancing exitedly!

"Hmmmm," Yvra scratches the scales at the base of his ears. "I've certainly read of that spell. Perhaps if we are able to reunite with Petrahk, we can ask her if she can cast it. Velvunk, as a Cleric, certainly cannot. And I'm sure you understand, I harness the power of Natural Science and Chymistry, not the arcane or divine.

"Speaking of which, I have means harnessing magnetism to draw a metallic being–or one wearing metal armor–to me from a distance, but not to project one more than at most thirty feet. That's unlikely to get you to it as fast as you're hoping.

"That aside, I hope when we reach its lair is, that we can surprise it. Perhaps I can set some traps and then we can draw it out toward us? I have traps that might make it difficult for it to fly, as well as one that could perhaps interfere with its ability to utilize magic–including even a breath weapon–for at least a short time.

"I would rather approach this dragon with the spell most call Resist Energy to protect us though. Velvunk, do you have it prepared? And if not, do you have the capacity to pray to Erastil for more spells today?"

Turning to the quickling, Yvra asks, "Wendel, how far is it to this mushroom dragon? How long does it take to walk there–for slow folks like us, that is, not a quickling like yourself? Oh, and can you describe how big the dragon is, and anything you know about its lair?"

Before we go straight to the dragon, I wonder if it's worth Velvunk memorizing Resist Energy (or Mass Resist) before we go there, even if it means us needing to wait til tomorrow? Or should we just work around its breath as best we can, with the impressive array of spells Velvunk has already memorized today?

"Hmmmmm. I hate to say this, but in this case I think C4N has the right of it: Smiting will surely be necessary.

"If I'm right, it'll be more Plant than Dragon...but that makes it more deadly, not less. In addition to its claws, bite, and acid breathe, I wonder if it might not have the ability to create a poisonous cloud...and I certainly wouldn't let Itchy bite it; it's flesh is most likely deadly as well.

"From my experimentation with belladona, I believe I should be able to protect each of us from poison before we approach it...but I have no way to protect us from the acid, not to mention claws, teeth, and battering wings.

"Do any of you have a way to protect one another from acid?"

Yvra is impressed with the way Compensates–despite (or maybe because of?) his ideosynchrasies–truly has a gift at putting people at ease. Seeing that the quickling was willing to speak openly, Yvra approaches slowly.

"I am sorry. Betrayal is the bitterest of poisons. Do you know why she did this? And what she seeks to do next?

"I must say, the fates may have brought us together for a reason. While we cannot bring back your family or home, we may well be able to thwart her ambitions and prevent her from doing this to more like yourself–or coming back for you.

"If you'd like to see Arlantia prevented from doing things like this again, please tell: Do you know where Arlantia is now? Or where her Tree is?"

I think I can safely start anytime now though. No choices left to do (well, other than some skill points) just some math and proofreading.

I appreciate you running this game for us and I'm happy to continue.

I get busy from time to time, and don't begrudge the same from others...but given that, I wonder if there are some things we could do to tighten the pace a bit?

My vote (if it works for others) is for you just rolling things like Initiative and Perception (and maybe even Saves) on our behalf, when you know we need to roll them.

I find sometimes a just rolling initiative takes us a week.

Unrelated, any concerns about power level? I think Yvra may be a bit over-optimized for this party, and if so I'm happy to tone him down.

Whoops! I'd lost track that we were up.

As I mentioned in my Gameplay post:
* The ghost can't touch you unless you attack it. If you attack it (without leaving the circle) it can now touch you...but you still benefit from the +8 to saves while I'm within the circle.
* PLEASE DON'T BREAK THE CIRCLE BY LEAVING IT, as that will remove the +8 to saves from all of us.

This applies to me, and any other ally within the circle who attacks it: Now that I've attacked the ghost, it can touch me through the circle, but I retain my +8 to saves while I'm within the circle.

Hearing only agreement and silence, Yvra nods and casts a careful circle of salt around the companions.

"Don't cross the line, or you'll ruin it for everyone. She can't touch you at all until you attack. After that, she's likely to be able to strike at you, but the circle will still give you significant protection." +8 Competence to the ghost's spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural effects.

The scholar carefully lays out an unbroken circle of salt, creating a protective circle around herself and up to 1 adjacent ally per 2 class levels (minimum 1) that lasts for a number of rounds equal to the scholar’s Intelligence bonus (minimum 1). If a protected ally moves outside of the square they occupied when the circle was created, the protective energy is disrupted and the effect immediately ends. While within this circle, the scholar and protected allies gain a circumstance bonus to saving throws against spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural effects equal to the scholar’s Intelligence bonus (+8). Whenever the scholar succeeds on a saving throw against such an effect while protected by the circle, she immediately regains her martial focus if it is currently expended.
.
In addition, while within the circle, the scholar and affected allies are also protected from bodily contact by summoned creatures and incorporeal undead. This causes the natural weapons and touch attacks of such creatures to fail and the creatures to recoil if such attacks require touching the warded creature. The protection ends if the warded creature takes any hostile action against a blocked creature, and that creature may pass through the barrier (though other creatures are still warded as normal).

Yvra says, "I know how to lay a circle of salt in order to protect us from her evil...but if you cross the line you'll ruin it. Does anyone want out before I create it?".

Everyone: Let me know if you don't want to be included. Anyone inside gets +7 circumstance bonus to saving throws against spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural effects...and incorporeal undead can't touch us. It would last for 7 rounds.
.
Any objections to killing the medusa-ghost at range, from within a circle of salt? If someone wants out, I'll delay until after they move.

Yvra flaps along in his flying contraption. He pauses to look for anything of interest (say a petrified leg) within the rubble, and then cranes his neck to look around the corner.

Just before Cani walks in, Yvra says, ""Hold on, buddy. I think this thing was made to defend this place--but it's probably not able to tell the difference between us and invaders. If there's something in there that we need--like an errant petrified leg--we might need to go in...but for now, let's let them rest, eh?"

Does seem like they must be here guarding something interesting...otherwise, it's odd placement of golems...but perhaps we could sneak in to look around, if we don't find what we need elsewhere?.

I recommend we continue on to the next open space (East and then SE)

Kwiazy, when that happens it's because the Google Presentation (that we're using for maps) sees the square as "on top of" your piece. I left the orange square just where it was, visually, but used the Arrange option to move it "backward" on the pile of overlapping images. (I also put a screenshot of how to do so on the third page of GM Red's map presentation.) You should be able to move yourself again.

GM Redelia: Yvra's in the right spot now. My intent was to glide forward into the room (assuming my Per roll didn't detect anything) and then to stay close to the Southern wall, while pivoting to look North.

Yvra's nictitating membrane blinks with surprise as Petrahk calls out how to disrupt the summoning circle even before Yvra can--and then sees Kwiazy act on it not three seconds later.
