So this a theoretical build that KrispyXIV has referred to a few times i am going to take people through it and see how it works, So for this build you will ideally play an Ancient Elf this gives you two things you want early access to the champion archetype and longsword proficiency through elven weapons feat and a phantom eisolon. I recommend starting stats of 16 str 12 Dex, 10con, 12 int, 16 cha, 12 wis At 2nd level grab the class feat you want.
At 8th level grab the bastion class feat at 10th grab the quick shield block feat and now tencinally you can shield block whilst your ally punishes, technically because its one trigger but hey your two creatures using two reactions so I vote it works. So is this set up strong, not amazingly its functional and could be bit of fun, your still going to be pretty vunerable to area effects and stuff like that. So has anyone tried the double punisher how was it and has anyone else found a surprisingly cool build for the odd one out/ugly ducking summoner ? ![]()
So there have been a lot of talk about flight on the summoner playtest and took this discussion of there to avoid cluttering it with more of the same. So generally I don't think most people are opposed to late flight for game balance reason, most people can see the logic of why flight should be a late game ability me included. But the eidolon aesthetic both in the art work in the playtest document and the recommended description of both the Angel and Dragon eidolon mentions wings being the norm so a lot of people are going to default to having winged ediolon at the level 1. So I feel this is a problem because appearance in my opinion tend inform expectation and there are going to be feel that because they have wings they should be able to fly and will shocked to find out that they are not going to be able to do that easily until level 9 or at will until level 16. I feel that it is appearance that has meant there has been ten times as much talk about eidolon flight than say a storm oracles ability to fly. So how much do you think appearance effects people's expectations and do you think as a rule of thumb developers on rpgs should be careful about the asthetic choices they make and how they might influence their players. Or do you think aesthetics should have no effect on narratives and mechanics ? ![]()
So i pretty much have no knowledge of the lore in pathfinder 2e, I tried to use to run my segment of my face to face groups ongoing forgotten realms game (ď&d main setting) but it went poorly, more poorly than me running 5e went im not a great dm but one was silly fun with easy combats that were over proably too quickly and the other was uneven mess that stalled far to often. So i came to the conclusion that I obviously don't have the magic touch when it comes to pathfinder 2e encounter design. But given our group is kind of falling apart due to covid meaning were not meeting up i volunteered to run something online and thought I would try an AP because then I wouldn't have to encounter design. Two questions my gonalorian lore is poor, how necessary is to running any of the APs. which AP is easiest to run? Also just because I m curious did pathfinder 2e have a transformative event like the spellplague between editions to justify the mechanical shift ? ![]()
Would you trade your 4 spells per day for wizard level caster proficiency on your cantrips and offensive focus spells ? Would you be happy with a magus who mainly spellstriked with cantrips apart from 1 to 3 times per encounter where he spell strikes with focus spells ? Would you like focus spells that mimicked the old magus calling card spells for example shocking grasp, frostbite etc ? ![]()
So inevitably in d&d like games classes end up overlapping but what I like about 2e is that all of the classes seem to have at least one unique area where they are unparalleled. But then thought about it and I couldn't come up with one for the wizard or sorcerer. So using the examples below I couldn't come up with any great unique perks for the sorcerer, alchemist and wizard and had to settle for the rather lame has a unique class feature USP rather than pointing out somewhere that they are absolutely the king of their field. So have I missed any USP worth mentioning double points if it was for those classes me mentioned above. Barbarian - Heaviest Hitter

So I have been playing pathfinder kingmaker and it is a gloriously mess it faithfully adapts the over the top mechanics of the pathfinder to a ice wind Dale style setup. But what it did do is make me think about how a pathfinder 2e game would play out. My gut reaction is that pathfinder 2e is utterly unsuited to becoming a crpg that the choices to simplify things from 1e would make it a bit lackluster for the more tactical and victory focused minds of Videogamers what do you think? ![]()
So my third level party encountered an evil higher level sorceress (a necro-bunny) and were running errands for her when she was attacked by a truly prodigious number of enemies which she disposed with a truly malevolent alacrity. Our party paladin had been moaning about the sorceress being evil and I knew she had better equipment for my character and I thought that after she had used quite a few spells to kill the mob we might stand a chance. So I had my character do something I knew would probably get him killed and casted hold person on her with the paladin adjacent to her and it actually worked. So our paladin had his turn and he could have killed the evil sorceress with a coup de gras with my character egging him on to finish it, and he did nothing and she made her save and the rest was really messy for the party. So yes the party wipe was my fault but seriously what the hell I gift wrap the paladin a chance to smite evil ......... and he stands there uselessly. So which of us do you think made the bigger mistake. To be fair I expected she would just kill my character and was a little surprised when she just blasted the entire party to smithereens. It was one of those occasions where I thought you would either pull off a coup or win a darwin award, both of which outcomes would have amused me. ![]()
So assuming your campaign turns up to have a high degree of lethality because your GM wants things to be dark (because why not) and uber serious other that setting up a death-pool and generally finding morbid humour in it what other ways do you think Grizzled vets would find to distract themselves from the fact they are probably going die before the year's out? ![]()
It is fairly common for characters to be faced with no win moral scenarios and situations and for situations where the smart answer is the opposite of the moral answer. Now this goes doubly for paladins who are barred from taking the smart choice on pains of losing their class abilities. But most Paladin's are surrounded by people that are less moral than them and this can cause inter party conflict, so if a paladin decides to walk way from the decisions/ busy himself elsewhere and his party decides to make the smart decision can he be held accountable for it? Can he fall for not stopping his companions committing a potentially evil act? ![]()
The unchained summoners slam evolution says you can take it as many times as you have the limbs arms evolution. The claws evolution pretty much says the same (except with one leg option). So assuming for the sake of simplicity you are a thing eidiolon (just an arms evolution nothing else) could you take both the claws and slam evolution? ![]()
So I have tried to compare how powerful the new eidolon is compared to Animal Companion, and I have found that I can not make an Unchained Eidolon that is better than the Ape Companion at level 4 or the big cat companion at 7 for combat usefulness. Can anyone else. Big Cat Level 7 Size Large; Speed 40 ft.; AC 26 (with full plate barding) Attack bite +10 (1d6+7), +10 2 claws (1d4); Ability Scores Str 24, Dex 15, Con 17, Int 2, Wis 15, Cha 10; Special Attacks rake (1d4); Special Qualities low-light vision, scent. Feats: Power Attack, Toughness Ape Level 4 Size Large; Speed 30 ft., climb 30 ft.; AC +6 natural armor; Attack bite (1d4+6), 2 claws (1d4+6); Ability Scores Str 22, Dex 15, Con 14, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 7; Special Qualities low-light vision, scent. ![]()
Does anyone else find it funny that bad kitty eidolons (pounce claw monsters) are still the most effective type of combat eidolon even using unchained rules. I mean I know the bad kitty eidolons are considerably weaker (like 10 points of strength and do downgraded damage dice weaker) but is still the most effective thing you can do with an eidolon. In fact given there are less evolutions in total and a lot of the flavor ones are gone I imagine kitty eidolons aren't going to be any less prevalent. Also has anyone done the mAths to see how the new eidolon compares to the dire tiger cause I could easily perceive of higher level games where you pouncing eidolon gets entirely sidelined by your awesome smiting tiggers. ![]()
I wanted to play a character based on Bernard from Codex Alera, I was hoping for build advice. Basically Bernard a master archer who has bonded with two fury's (elementals) one of stone and the other of wood, the stone fury takes the form of a large stone dog (earth glide etc) and the wood fury takes a humanoid shape. Bernard has magic but only really earth and stone magic. So what would be my best bet for getting as close the character as possible ? ![]()
One of the things that I read in the unchained thread is talk of a tentacled gelatenous ediolon with two butts now I know there are tentacle evolutions and I believe there is an ooze evolution but I can't seem to find anywhere a butt evolution, I know it's an asinine question and I do t want to be the butt of anyone jokes but which book is it in and what does it do. ![]()
I have been playing in a hyper-lethal game of throne type game that my cm is clearly aiming to be as dark and bloody as possible. So after dying a couple of times I have lost the ability not to find the whole campaign hilarious and have just been having fun hamming it up. This seems to passing off my gm but I just can't seem to get into the right frame of mind. So does anyone have any tips on how to get into the right mindset for a gothic style game? ![]()
I am wondering what do people think the follow through of the release of Pathfinder unchained with be on Pathfinder society. I mean I believe the developers have stated that the new material is not errata but new material so does that means a new material it will not be allowed in the PFS core only games (as it is no content) even though it is meant to balance and make the system better. What about normal PFS will the Old classes and new classes live side by side, so could you have a presumably much weaker unchained summoner in the same party as a traditional summoner? How do people think it will play out? ![]()
So I was wondering what people think unchained will do the the summoner obviously they intend to nurf both the eidolon and probably the spell list. So assuming they do bring summoners spellcasting in line with other 2/3 casters what would people think would be the right power level for an eidolon. In my mind the power level aught to be higher than an equivalent level summoned creature or animal companion, otherwise the summoner will end up just being an inferior sorcerer (who can get summons and animal companions and full casting). The perfect power level would be something that is stronger than an equivalent levelled summoned monster and weaker than an equivalently level rogue. So I was wandering what would actually fit into that particular power niche? ![]()
Fixing Martial's is something that comes up a lot on the forums but a lot of the solutions seems to just be boosts to what the Martial's are already good at. Martial's don't need extra damage if they can full attack. What some martial's do need is better action economy, the difference between the archer and the pouncer and the move and strike martial is astonishing. Personally I would just give martial a move action and then full attack to fix that problem and achieve parity. Martial Damage is too high to be honest this could be labelled damage is too high and strip the martial bit out, focused damage dealers be then sorcerers or martial can obliterate CR equivalent opposition in just a couple of turns. It is probably not a solvable problem in Pathfinder given the maths is worked around so whilst it is a nuisance for those wanting encounters to last for more than 2-5 turns rocket tag is another nostalgic 3.5 trait that pathfinder is tied to. Attack and Full Attacks are boring, the Most Effective thing a martial can do is full Attacks but always full attacking could get quite monotonous not to mention it isn't flashy enough for some. Martial's do have other options in the form of combat maneuvers but these maneuvers generally take a standard action and don't scale anywhere near as well as BAB vs AC. They are also tied to stunts which further limits who can use them effectively. The CMD scaling is unfortunately something that can't be changed, personally I would rather see a trip maneuver provoke a reflex save etc and I would removed AoP on maneuvers and just let players go for it. ![]()
So which class is best at melee combat all things being equal? I would have fought at late levels paladins would be the clear winner, divine power + fates favored (unsanctioned knowledge) beat weapons training for damage perks and if you are really cheesing things paladins will find it much easier to qualify for the elderict heritage(orc)line which give some of the most amazing bonuses in the game especially with the optimistic gambler trait. The line can give gives a massive bonus to strength(+12 strength with power of giants + inate) and +9 to damage and attack as a standard action for 1+ 1d4 rounds 7-10 times per day (a swift if you allow quicken spell like ability). But I am not sure what does everyone else think ? ![]()
There was a tradition in the Old Jewish Temple (thousands of years ago)of basically shouting sins at a goat and then driving it out to drive away the sins it is where the phrase scapegoat comes from. It's a weird bit of trivia but it is also something that inspired a character concept of mine that I haven't had the opportunity to play until now. The basic history of the the character is that he was chosen as a sacrifice and so he accepted the sins of his village and then he was beaten, he would have been beaten to death but some adventurers intervened leaving him horribly scarred and with a weird mentality. Basally he wants to take all the sins onto himself because he believes he is already damned by his nature. So when ever anyone in what ever party he is in suggested doing something horrific he will volunteer to do it to save them the damnation slash guilt. It is a very weird character to want to play, and worry slightly about my sanity for wanting to play it but I now finally have the opportunity to give the concept a go do so I am debating whether I should or not what do people think? ![]()
This may seem and odd question but how do you not role-play yourself? I am not a terrible role-player my characters have back stories and quirks and behave differently from how I do but they all think like me (with different circumstances, backgrounds etc) is it possible to play a character who thinks differently from you? ![]()
I am currently playing a character who has lost his paladin powers and having played through a session without them found that I didn't enjoy being comparatively powerless. My gm's say my character will have to a wait a couple of sessions till our cleric reaches the level to gets atonement to get my powers back. So given I don't fancy waiting what do people think are cool ways to kill of your PC? I was originally thinking of a crisis of faith/leap of faith of a tall cliff but am not sure if that's too tasteless. ![]()
I am playing a low level polearm fighter and my gm recently discovered the step up feat and has now given it lots of NPC. So I am coming into the situation where I can't attack quite often without provoking to move away. So if I am wearing armor spikes and wielding a glaive (reach weapon) and an enemy is in an adjacent square to me do I have to drop my glaive to attack with the armour spikes? ![]()
So I was thinking of creating a homebrew 1st level spell called detect power level, which would detect a character's power-level based on the targets HD/level. So the question is how should the numbers scale and should different classes/HD have different multipliers to their HD to judge their power level? ![]()
I was thinking of converting the 3.5 Mage Slayer feat line to pathfinder, this included Mage Slayer: Enemies you threaten can't cast defensively, Pierce Concealment (ignore miss chance and detect right mirror image), and Pierce Magic Protection: Ignore AC boosts from spell. Are they overpowered for pathfinder ? what changes would I need to make to them? ![]()
Are martials meant to gain access to their full attack the majority of the time ? (then enemies should be spaced out with only 5 ft between of each other). Or are they meant to only have access to their full attacks on odd levels after they have moved between spaced out opponents. I ask this because assuming the latter is true then shouldn't pouncing and archery be nerfed given its considerably higher damage potential and the fact that it leaves less opportunities for enemies to full attack them? ![]()
I wonder did we ever get an answer/errata on how the double barrelled firearms work with a full attack. Now obviously a double barrelled musket can be used to shoot two bullets on the same attack which means with a standard action you can shoot 2 bullets at a -4 penalty. But lets move on to a full attack, obviously a full attack is made up of multiple iterative attacks and bonus attack (haste, rapid shot etc). Now there is nothing saying that you can't double your number of shots per attack for every attack in a full attack with a -4 penalty but that doesn't seem balanced to me. So how is the double barrelled firearms special abilities meant to react with full attacks? ![]()
Obviously Simulacrums of a Balor has 10HD but is its SLA caster level also halved to 10? Assuming the spell level drops would a Balor lose access to to his higher level SLA's such as Implosion and Summon Level 9 (which can summon a 19 CR Demon) which are equivalent to 9th level spells (Minimum CL 17). Would the Balor SLA DC's change? Second lets take the Solar he has spell casting at level 20 and has a HD of 22, his simulacrum has a HD of 11 but what caster level (20,11,10)? Assuming his fall in HD also means he loses access to higher level spells will this mean that he has access to all 5th/6th level cleric spells (11/10) or just the ones he had prepared in the bestiary? Assuming you Simulacrum the Tarrasque at level 15 would it also be utterly un-killable? ![]()
I am going to start playing in a ongoing low level game that will go from level 1 to 5 and was wondering about the effects of combining Spell Tattoo, Spell Specialization and Gifted Adept for 5d4+5 burning hands at level 1 (Orc Bloodline). Is this too broken to be playable or an expected use of all the + spell level abilities? ![]()
Assuming you want all classes to be balanced beyond with each (by level) after level 7 how would you perceive a fighter matching up to the cosmic power of magic. Now and oft repeated trope is the dragon ball z martial which suggest that high level martials should be able to ignore the rules of psychics due to their massive spiritual energy or sheer willpower. Now I think that beam spam martial are in the end of the day a just little to silly for pathfinder but I could see why some would suggest. Personally I think that Martials do no to be supernatural (and recognized as such) to make sense in the higher levels but would much rather be inspired by mythology than anime. so I would rather have my heroes warp spasming (Cuchullaine) into combat monsters or shooting dozens of arrows in an instant (Hercules) or even just invoking the power of god's or ancient artifacts (Roland, Arthur etc) than going DBZ. So what is your opinion? ![]()
So when does trying to build an effective character become powergaming? For example I decide I want to make a component archer so I come up with a concept and identity and then build the character. I prioritise dexterity so I can hit and then I take all of the archery feats for my fighter. I then look over the characters saves and AC and see if anything is particularly bad and if so can I boost it easily, is that power gaming, optimizing or munchkining. Say then I decide to player a Caster and pick up a green sting scorpion familiar, improved initiative and the reactionary trait (+10 initiative bonus) so that I have a very high chance of going first is that power gaming? Or say I play a kitsune enchanter (who gain a racial bonus to enchanting) and decide to focus my bloodline bonus and two feats on the already boosted school so I can reliably enchant anyone not immune to enchantment is that power gaming or just specialization?

Her pale elven skin compliments her lithe frame and face but her clothes are a bit reckless, as if she threw her outfit together at the last minute in the dark. She has several belts a cloak with too few pockets and a robe with too many. Loose papers are stuffed into her pockets and books are strapped to her belts like they were coin pouches. There's something intriguing about her, perhaps it's her company or perhaps it's simply her sense of purpose. But nonetheless, people tend to buy her a drink, while awkwardly trying to avoid talking about her past. Bio
Born in Mierani Forest to her loving parents and the younger of two children among peasants and lower class denizens, Thasitalia led a non-eventful childhood. That is until her kidnapping due to an unfortunate case of mistaken identity. When the kidnappers realized their mistake and learned Thasitalia’s real parents would never be worth the ransom they decided to kill her and dump her body to make her an example. Moments before her death, in a moment of anxiety and fear Thasitalia’s innate magical talent revealed itself, burning the thug tasked with killing her. After her display of arcane talent, Thasitalia’s life was sparred at great cost to one of the gang’s kidnapper’s, a tiefling wizard by the name of Epxium. In exchange for her life she was bound to apprentice under Epxium until her debt was repaid, and for a time life was better than it was at home. Thasitalia even made quite a few friends in every social and professional circle, something Epxium recognized was easier for an elf than a tiefling. As Thasitalia’s grasp of the arcane grew, so did her innate talent for magic, which led to the beginning of a problem. Thasitalia grew reckless under the Epxium’s mentorship, which was intentional on Epxiun’s part, but it was never intended to go as far as hurting other members of the gang, or killing them. Thasitalia was always effective, but her reputation became a bit of a problem and drew unwanted attention from the gang’s leadership to Epxium. Epxium begrudgingly was pressured to set Thasitalia free for a time to repay her debt on ventures of her own. Several months have passed since she was last seen with the kidnappers, but she has not let go of her sense of purpose on repaying the debt owed to Epxium. |
