Jonathon

As Jonathon browses the stalls, two catch his eye;

A Balding Scholar is presiding over a stall crammed whith various books and nicknacks claiming to be relics of anceant thassilonia. As the thassilonians were legendary experts at Rune magic, it is possible that his stall hides something of interest.

Another stall is laid out with bones and tarot cards. A woman swaddled in mystic robes sits in the shadows, beneath a sign declaring 'Madame Mvashti's fortunes and charms.'

Marcan The child flashes a cheeky (and completely unrepentant) smile, before running to join his friends who are heading along with the tide of crowds into the main square. The only people not joining the crowds are your fellow traders, who are busy making the last adjustments to their stalls. Today should be good business.

Kejal and Jonathan You make your way across the ever more crowded square and find space to watch the festivals opening ceremony.

The square quickly becomes crowded as people file in, gathering in small groups of family and friends that steadily get pushed closer and closer together until the area in front of the stage is decidedly cosy, and the only way to maintain a decent amount of personal space is by hanging back by the edges of the square.

Sherrif Hemlock and his men are keeping a vigilant watch on the crowds. The atmosphere is jubilant and this seems like the start of a new page after the recent troubles but you can never be sure with the way tempers have been flaring lately and the crowd holds almost as many visitors as locals, all drawn to the town by the promise of festive opportunities.
The crowd is just starting to become restive when Mayor Devlin climbs the stage rousing a cheer from the crowd which she quells with a gesture and a proclamation of thanks. “Well this must be the most anticipated event of the year, and it is my honour to welcome you all to the annual Swallowtail festival, especially this year when we have so much to celebrate. And what a turnout. Larz Rovanky, I do believe this is the first time I have seen you outside that Tannery of yours.” This gets a chuckle and a few cheers from the locals in the crowd, “and plenty from further afield I see. Has anyone made it from Magnimar?...” She goes on like this calling out different places and people, working the crowd and welcoming each in turn to enjoy the festival.

Sheriff Hemlock steps up next and addresses the crowd with a much more sombre tone. “While today is a festival, and enjoyment is of course not to be discouraged, I would remind you all of the importance of safety and civil behaviour in ensuring that this is a fun day for everyone. Most importantly, as always we will be holding a bonfire this evening and I don’t think the people of this town need reminding about how dangerous fire can be. So instead of telling you all things you should already know about being careful near the fire this evening, I am just going to ask that you all respect a minuits silence in memory of the people who lost their lives in the fire that claimed our church just five years ago. The church has now been replaced, but our neighbours have not.”

His mood seems to infect the crowd as a mostly respectful silence spreads across the square. It is ended by a simple thank you from the Sheriff as he steps aside to make room for the next speaker.
Luckily the Jubilant spirit is restored by the local thespian Cyrak Drakus, who launches into a whole speil of the amusing anecdotes, near disasters, and comical triumphs that have accompanied the rebuilding of the cathedral over the last five years. He finishes with an exhortation for people to visit the theatre later in the evening. “We are playing the most critically acclaimed ‘Harpies Curse’ led by the beautiful queen of the Harpies, all the way from Magnimar, non other than Allishanda herself!!”

Mutters and gasps ripple across the square at this announcement that one of the most popular players in Vassilon is in surprise residence at the local theatre.

Lastly Father Zantus steps up to the stage. “Thank you all for coming to what I hope will be a truly memorable day, and the start of a new chapter in the life of our town. Today we celebrate not only Legend of Desna, nursed back to health by a child whom she transformed into a butterfly, and in memory of which we will be celebrating at noon, followed by a buffet of free meals provided by our generous tavern’s, but also the consecration of our new and lovingly built church this evening. You have all worked hard to bring us to this moment, so now is the time to enjoy the fruits of your labour. I officially declare the festivities open.”

Cheers go up, and the crowd begins to disperse amongst the stalls and events that have been set up around the square and nearby town streets.

Feel free to explore Sandpoint and the festival.
There are all the usual festival type stalls and activities going on, including but not limited to:
A livestock market set up on the outskirts of the town, a wrestling ring set up by the edge of the main square, street entertainers of various sorts, gambling stalls, market stalls, fortune tellers, etc.
All the taverns have thrown open their doors as well as set up tables outside to serve beer and snacks.
Most importantly look out for opportunities for your aspects to make things complicated (and so earn you fate points), as well as opportunities to create advantages in the form of links and resources in the town that you might be able to draw on later.
But you have the day to explore and enjoy the festivities, so where do you want to start?

Welcome to the Fate of the Runelords Discussion thread.

When posting in the Gameplay thread consider that it is the morning of the much awaited swallowtail festival in Sandpoint and crowds are gathering for the opening ceremonies. Please head over to the Gameplay thread to introduce yourself to the town of Sandpoint and start your day.

Think about where you spent last night – do you have a house in Sandpoint, or do you live in barracks or guild accommodation? If you have arrived from out of town, did you stay in an inn last night (probably the rusty dragon, although there are about half a dozen others if you prefer) or have you arrived this morning, either on foot or on a ship that has pulled into the harbour?

The crowds are all heading to the town square, but feel free to persue other agendas if you wish.

I am also providing here some further details about the campaign in the form of issues - the problems affecting the world that you might solve in some way - and some locations in Sandpoint.

Issues

Fate games are held together by issues - long and short term problems that affect the setting. They act like Aspects and can be Compelled (with GM approval) to make life more difficult (thereby gaining a Fte point) or Invoked (for the usual bonuses) by anybody at any time.

The long term issue is (purhaps unsurprisingly) Rise of the Runelord - In pre-history Varisia was the site of a kingdom ruled by powerful sorceror-kings called Runelords. Their kingdoms fell long ago and now little is known about them, but they have left their mark on the land and its people. The land is scattered with their anceant ruins, and occasionally powerful runic artifacts show up in the hands of adventurers. This can be compelled when the History of Thassilon or its remnants make things difficult for the characters. It might also be possible to invoke at times if such things turn up in a beneficial way.

The short term issue is Acts of Rage Several years ago an epidemic of nightmares flared up across Sandpoint. The epidemic died down just as quickly as it arose and nothing more was thought of it, however ever since tempers have been brittle and quick to flare. This was most evident in the months imediately after the nightmares as several murders were planned and carried out, and the town chapel was burned down in what has been remembered as "That Late unpleasantness." Feelings are still raw, but the worst has passed and sharp tempers have simply become a fact of life in Sandpoint. Increased anger seems to have affected the surrounding countryside as well, with increasing numbers of raids carried out by goblin tribes on farmsteads and merchant caravans, and increased seemingly pointless agression from nearby wildlife. This can be compelled when hot tempers would make a situation worse (through the PC's anger, an NPC's anger, or both). It could also be invoked when you can take advantage of peoples anger.

[B]Places[B]

Cathedral Face: Father Devlin (Cleric of Desna)
http://pathfinder.wikia.com/wiki/Sandpoint_Cathedral
A chapel has long stood in the centre of Sandpoint, but after it burned down a larger cathedral was built, containing chapels dedicated to a half dozen deities.

Garrison Face: Sherrif Hemlock

The Garrison houses barracks for the town guard, as well as the Gaol.

Town Hall Face: Mayor Devlin
A large two story building capable of holding the towns entire adult population for Important councilmeetings (not that many bother attending anyway). The town bank is in the cellars.

Rusty Dragon Face: Ameiko Kaijitsu
http://pathfinder.wikia.com/wiki/The_Rusty_Dragon
The rusty Dragon is the most popular Inn in Sandpoint, and probably the place you will be staying if you arrive from out of town.

Explorers & Delvers Guildhouse Face: Jorn Memfry
HQ of the Explorers and Delvers guild.

It is early morning on the first day of Autumn, and already Sandpoint is buzzing with activity. After long years of building works and praying in makeshift wooden chapels, today is the day that the newly built Cathedral will be opened during the annual “Swallowtail festival.” The festival is always a highlight in the Sandpoint year, but with the opening of the Cathedral this year is extra special and the festival has been the hottest topic of conversation for months.

The streets are packed as what seems like it must be the whole population of Sandpoint make their way to the central square where a speaking platform has been erected in front of the new chapel, ready for the opening ceremony to begin.

Two aspects start in play across Sandpoint;
Excited crowds and Festival Stalls (although the stalls have not been opened yet).

Ah, thanks. I have found that now, very useful.

Strike that. I dont know how but I have managed to get a page up for the game with a whole load of tabs. Is there anyway I can bookmark it on this site so I dont lose it?

Dimitri Pavlenco is the third son of a local family of minor nobles. From a young age he was fascinated with magic, and caused havok attempting to read the books of visiting wizards and attempting to utilise any magical devices he could get his hands on. Eventually his family relented and pulled strings to have him admitted to the Academy in Cheliax, sure that having a family member versed in foreign sorcery would only increase the families prestige.
In Cheliax, Dimitri took to his studies like a duck to water although his drive to help others and do the morally correct thing regardless of the legal ramifications was a source of constant complication in his host country.
He met Professor Lorrimor during the course of his studies. The professor had become embroiled in a dispute with one of Dimitris college professors, and found himself (entirely coincidentaly) targeted by the Imps that plague Cheliax around the academy. Unable to stand by and do nothing, Dimitri stepped in and saved the professors life at the cost of earning the ire of his professor. Doing so cost him dearly at the academy.Nethertheless his magical aptitude was undeniable and he graduated with honours.
Receiving a summons to return to his homeland for the Lorrimor's funeral was a surprise, however Dimitri reasoned that it was not altogether out of the ordinary considering the lengths he had gone to in saving the professors life.

I have swapped out a few minor details from the draught version as well as added background skills and traits
I will leave finalising his equipment until we agree the starting gold, but I dont mind what method we decide upon for that

I second your votes Warren, although I am not sure what background skills are?
I think I am going to change one or two minor details for Dimitri, based on backgrounds. Will post his final details tomorrow.
I am glad we have a gnome with the party. Gnomes are awesome.

My preference would be to level up as the adventure suggests. One less thing to keep track of.
KISS

I am in agreement there. Personally I think I would prefer max at level 1 and then average, but I am ok with whatever is decided.

OK, so I have drafted a character. Not sure how we are doing characteristics so i have gone with a 20 point buy. Can change things easily enough if necessary.
Also, I have not included hit points yet (do i need to roll them?) and I am not entirely sure what to do about traits as I have never used them before. I assume we get a trait from the carion crown players book. Do we get any others?

If it helps to have people throw in for specific books then I will opt for book 3 (unless anyone else particularly wants it, in which case I will do book 4)

I have two character concepts in mind. I posted them upthread, but will repost here for clarity.
1) A Magus from Quadira. She has been hired by a noble family to instruct their daughter in swordplay and magic, however in addition her exotic features and dress have resulted in her becoming something of a novelty attraction and she is regularly 'invited' to parties and gatherings where she is made to feel somewhat of a spectacle. At least the pay is good.
2) The gifted son of a noble who moved to cheliax to study the art of conjuring. He has recently returned and begun hunting through ancient libraries and family treasure troves, hungry for the arcane secrets of his homeland.
My preference is the conjuror, but if she fits better with the party then I will go Magus.
No real preferences in terms of character creation, although I tend to prefer point buy over random characteristics.
I am happy to gm any book after book 1.

I think that assumption is fair, although some thought needs to go into what is done with those characters during the adventures their player is acting gm.
Do they get benched for the adventure?
Do they tag along as the gms mouthpiece within the group?
I think I am in favour of the second option, although care would need to be taken to ensure they remained background assistance for the active players rather than sharing our stealing the limelight.

I am happy to chip in and gm a later book (possibly even more than one) I just want to get the hang of this forum and it's conventions/tools before I jump into the deep end.

I could be wrong, but it looked like jesper Roland Sorenson was offering to gm 5 posts up.

Perhaps my conjuror helped him escape. They could have made their way to ustalav together. Promise of employment and a friend in the nobility would be a pretty strong draw.

Further to my expression of interest, I have a few character concepts to float

I would like to join in with this.

I am new to actual play on these forums (so may need a little help getting around the forum specifics) but I have played in AP's elsewhere.

I would like to play a wizard if possible, although if that role is not needed in the group I could happily shift to a gish of some sort (probably a magus but I could be persuaded to go with a cleric).

Not sure about GMing something as complicated as Pathfinder due to time considerations, but let me get the hang of the site and I might be game to step in as GM a bit further into the campaign.

Hope this gets off the ground. In the meantime I will peruse the players guide and mull over some character concepts.

Hi,
I have played a few PvP on other forums (although not pathfinder yet) but am new to this forum.
I would like to play in an adventure path. Doesn't really matter which one, preferably in a group maintaining a decent post rate.
Character wise, I like playing either mages or gishes.
Preference is to play a wizard, but would be happy with a magus, or possibly even a cleric or paladin if they fit the group better.
Race wise I would look at the campaign needs, but probably either a human or gnome (maybe an elf).
