Well, that wasn't creepy, Evelyn!

It's from a zombie shooter I used to play all the time when I was younger; Left 4 Dead 2. The crying girl is known as the witch. The moment you come too close, or do something else that startles her, she'll scream and come running after you. One swipe of her claws and you're down, and she'll continue to lash out until you're dead.

First time I encountered her I got the same creepy vibes our characters now have!

"Yeah... Sure... Go swim up to it," Eldon mutters as Arval leaves the submersible.

"I mean, it's not like you're wasting your time while I could've instantly teleported you up to it... Not at all..."

Eldon shrugs, folds his arms, and leans against the sub's hull as comfortably as possible. "Go swim then... Like I care... Hmpf..."

While sulking Eldon looks at Kawrock and Whiskey, wondering if they're going to do anything to make him breathe water and give him the ability to talk (senselessly) to fish.

"Ilya! Do not be alarmed, you are still in a dream-like state. You helped my foolish minion meet..."

Ilya sits up, her eyes wide open. "How late is it?!"

"Wait, why did you wake up? Uhm, you still have to tell me what you wish for! Prospe..."

"Nothing! Now go away, I have to hurry!" she replies as she kicks the bed sheets off to the side and jumps out of bed.

"I won't ask you again! This is your only chance to have a wish granted!"

Ilya pulls her robe over her head and quickly ties her sash. "Good! Leave!"

"But I...!"

"Leave!" she yells as she picks up her backpack, slips on her slippers and opens the window of her recently purchased mansion. She leaps out into the air and lands gracefully in front of her porch.

As she runs toward the Emerald Spire at the same speed as a sprinting horse, cursing the fact she overslept, Ilya puts on her other gear. The presence within her head fades while cursing Ilya's existence, but Ilya mentally blocks out whatever it's saying.

Ilya enters the dungeon, runs up to the Spire itself while fishing her transport token out of one of her pockets, and teleports to the level she and her friends explored last time. There she exchanges her transport token for her wand of mage armor as she runs toward the set of stairs that lead down to where her friends should be gathered.

UMD: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
UMD: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25

Seconds later, the others can notice Ilya running up behind them. She quickly puts away her wand and stops behind them, staring at the centaur-like constructs.

Will: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32

"You okay?" Ilya asks her allies. "They look angry. Something happened? Sorry I'm late! I overslept."

Tural heals himself, while Imoya watches how Denario's orb of acid hits Glorio in the face. Distracted by the acid in his face, Glorio's unable to predict what Mavor's up to. As Glorio moves to intercept Mavor when the latter moves up to him, Mavor stays where he's at and attacks from above after all. His greataxe comes down on Glorio's back, right between his shoulder blades. With the immense force behind the strike, the weapon's blade cuts through Glorio spine and enters his ribcage from behind. Glorio slams into ground below, where the foo lion directly jumps onto his unmoving body and sinks its teeth into his throat.

Mavor's correct. I was struggling on how to describe it flavor-wise, considering common sense says you can't avoid damage from a fireball that explodes right next to you, but kicking the sphere away was just the flavor description I came up with.

The mayor once again speaks to the townsfolk. "I present to you the brave heroes who will follow in Kassen’s footsteps to retrieve the Everflame! Go, brave heroes, and do not return until you have the eternal fire."

With that, the mayor points to the south, the direction of Kassen’s tomb. The townsfolk begin waving goodbye. Most are rather cheerful now they know the matter's being handled by Pathfinders, but some look at you with cold, solemn looks on their faces.

Just 2 hours outside of Kassen the narrow path winds through the raking claws of the trees, now bereft of their leaves, which crunch loudly underfoot. Up ahead, a fallen tree trunk blocks the path. Suddenly a trio of snarling humanoids leaps up from behind the log, all greenish skin and fearsome tusks, bellowing vulgar challenges.

"Your mother's big boned! Bwahaha!"

"Pwahahaaa! Your nose is crooked!"

"Gharharhar! You stink like old socks!"

You're up when your name's bold. If multiple names are bold, you don't have to wait for the player above you in the initiative order to post. We make use of initiative blocks, meaning actions will resolve in the order they've been posted when multiple names are bold. If you want your character to act after someone else's, just write that in your post.

Also, we generally use maps for combat. It'd be greatly appreciated if you'd move your token when your character moves! :)

A young boy comes walking into the building. He looks around, spots Giri, and carefully walks over.

"Are you the Pathfinder named Giri?" the boy asks politely, not wanting to assume too much despite Giri matching a very clear description the boy was given.

"I was asked asked to deliver a message to you," the boy continues when he has the confirmation that the frogman he addressed is the frogman he was looking for. "Venture-Captain Adril Hestram asked me to tell you and some of your colleagues, Lady Crystal Rime and Kendra Ventari, that you are to depart to the town of Kassen immediately."

The boy looks around at the others, guessing that the nearby women are Crystal and Kendra. They also match the descriptions he was given. "Kassen is a small town on the Tourondel River in the Fangwood of Nirmathas," he says, then quickly continues in an apologetical tone: "I was told to add that, just in case. Though you may already know, I don't know..."

"Uhm, but you were told to go there. You'll be joined there by another Pathfinder. The mayor, Jonark Uptal, will give you further instructions."

A bit lost on what to do next, the boy starts looking around again. "I... I'm also looking for Abdi the Goldmane...?"

Once the boy's identified Abdi: "I was told you are to head to the Pig’s Paunch, where you'll be joined by some other Pathfinders for your Confirmation. It's, uhm... it's another tavern."

The boy then carefully backs down, and leaves the building.

See the updated map for the house and its rooms.

Tural's pretty convinced Laori indeed doesn't mean to kill Salvator.

"There's a pickman fellow in Ustalov with similar art? By the jolly Dark Princ, I did not know! Do you remember his name? I'd be interested in checking out his work!"

Laori lets you into the front room. The smell in this entry is of must and mildew, much of it coming from the mud tracked over the floorboards, as if a small army had marched through the room. To the south stands a single empty set of shelves.

DC 20 Survival:
As you take a look at the mud on the floor, you notice half a dozen humans were involved in making the mess. There are also tracks that show a seventh person was likely dragged out of the building, the thin trails and scuff marks of his dangling feet hinting at abduction.

The mud tracks lead to one of the two doors leading from the front room, and Laori opens it. A small hallway's revealed, with two more doors in it. While Laori merrily chats on, she leads you to the door the mud prints don't lead to and opens it. "Well, the door was open when I arrived so I just entered! I found a key inside the bedroom and decided to crash here!"

"And I just told you why I'm looking for him, didn't I? Did you already forget, silly?" Laori giggles while looking at Baer. "Aaaaaw, it's okay! Nothing to be ashamed of! I'm looking for Salvator, because his art shares themes with the Midnight Lord's faith!"

Inside the room beyond the door Laori opens are two tightly shuttered windows, yet the air inside seems strangely fresh and scented, no doubt from the six large candles that burn within. Each candle has been affixed by a glob of melted wax to the crown of a gleaming, polished skull, and each of these impromptu and grisly candle holders has been placed atop an otherwise clear desk to the west, arrayed in a gentle arc. A chair sits before the desk, and a careful stack of papers and scrolls sits inside the arc of skulls. To the south stands a nearly empty cabinet, its shelves barren save for a few paintbrushes and a cracked pottery urn.

"Sooooo as you can see I decided to make neat candle holders of the dead people's skulls," Laori informs you. "It sucks having no purpose, you see?"

"They haven't been able to tell me a lot themselves, even with my magic, but while researching their backgrounds I discovered they'd all committed suicide some time after losing their inspiration. They could apparently not handle living without."

Laori rolls her eyes. "Draaamaaaaa!"

Imoya:
Considering it's currently night for the others and it's convenient that your present time is the same as their present time, let's say it's also night for you. So I'm going to say the gray maiden who hasn't spoken yet carries a lantern.

The gray maidens obviously don't share your sense of humor.

"That's it, you're under arrest! Come with us quietly, or we will apply force!"

I kind of expected you to choose different words, like maybe bluff your way out. Though this could be an interesting chance to see what your character can do!

Mavor pushes the boat in the water and starts pushing it across the river. His immense strength makes up for the pitiful attempts of Baer and Denario to propel the boat forward by smacking the flat of the paddles against the water's surface. Meanwhile Tural flies alongside the boat to unburden it, which makes it easier for Mavor to push the boat along.

It's a miracle, but despite the constant echoing sound of paddles smacking water and the presence of a flying tree disguised with a mustache hovering alongside your boat, you manage to reach Old Korvosa's docks without being spotted by any of the patrol ship.

Don't think I grabbed my buckler yet. Not sure.

Well done, you've defeated the final boss of book 2! :D

We're going to move toward the conclusion of this book. As we do this, please take a look at the loot list and decide if there's anything you'd like to have. I will assume you want to keep the items that state you've claimed them unless you announce that you don't want to.

Also, it's time to level up! ;)

I have done some reading and I have compared glitterdust to spells like stinking cloud, of which I'm 100% certain it lingers and continues to be nasty when you get inside its affected area. I have to agree with you guys that glitterdust doesn't work the way I thought it does, and is just a sudden burst of glitter that disappears afterward. The duration serves to show how long a person's outlined by the glitter, and how long he can be blinded if he (continuously) fails his will save versus the blinding effect.

The glitterdust cloud has been removed from the map. I'm not going to retcon anything, because I don't want to create a mess. Instead I'll compensate Denario by returning his prepared shocking grasp, and offering him one of the following temporary 'boons':
* get a +4 luck bonus on a single save during this combat (must be declared before you roll)
* get a +4 luck bonus on a single attack roll during this combat (must be declared before you roll)
* reroll a single attack roll during this combat (may be declared after you roll)

Denario, you don't have to choose which boon you'd like to use before you actually decide to use it. Just keep in mind they're gone after this combat.

Each of you heads toward the Throaty Mermaid, sometimes at different speeds. It doesn't take long before Talathel disappears into the distance, but Murdoth's rather fast as well. Tsakuris has a bit of trouble keeping up with the half-orc and it doesn't take long before the distance between them grows. Seijiro by then realize Murdoth was very serious about the race and sprints past Tsakuris, not wanting to be last. Kolris doesn't particularly care and takes his time to get to the ship.

Murdoth:
While racing toward the Throaty Mermaid, you trip over the lace Talathel untied with his spell. You hit the floor and a nearby man comes running over.

"You okay?" he asks, and helps you up with some effort.

Before you can thank him the man's slipped into a nearby alley, leaving an envelope in your hands.

------

Defender of Freedom,

Though your current mission puts you at sea for months, you may still be of use to the Eagle Knights and the nation of Andoran. We have obtained a list of the Throaty Mermaid’s crew and believe several of them have information or skills we can use in our efforts to gain control of Absalom.

First, the ship’s navigator, Ulamon, has served on many ships, including the Polished Barnacle, which the Mordant Spire elves destroyed. The Polished Barnacle was among the fleet of Sargavan vessels that defeated Cheliax’s navy in 4643 ar. All of the Barnacle’s crew since received special rings from the Sargavan government that I believe may serve us well in our ongoing feud with the Chelish fleet. Do what you need to in order to gain this from Ulamon.

Additionally, a not-so-secret stowaway on the ship, a wererat named Snig Lacorse, could be used as an asset on another vessel were he spying on Andoran’s behalf. Convince him to disembark in Riddleport where we will place him aboard a more strategically beneficial ship.

For Democracy,

Captain Colson Maldris

Kolris:
While you walk toward the Throaty Mermaid, you suddenly feels someone put a hand inside one of your pockets. You turn around, but see no one. When you put your hand inside your pocket, you notice there's an envelope.

------

Loyal Lovely,

Though your journey at sea will take you through a number of Chelish ports between Absalom and the Mordant Spire, your mission involves tasks I need performed at sea. It has come to my attention that among the Throaty Mermaid’s crew is a half-elven woman with a most curious background and certain exceptional “talents.” She is currently in the employ of the ship’s captain, but I would be ever so grateful if you could negotiate her employment on my behalf. Given her pedigree it would please me greatly to have such an asset among my court.

Additionally, I need you to hide the enclosed coin somewhere on Sephriel’s person. Cheliax has much to gain by learning the secrets of the Mordant Spire and the lost continent of Azlant. Her Majestrix’s best diviners are set to scry on the elven dignitary once he has returned to his island citadel. Do not disappoint me by failing in this.

May Cheliax be forever in your thoughts,

Paracountess Zarta Dralneen

Tsukaris:
Just after Seijiro passes you, you realize you have to take a breather. You look over your shoulder and see Kolris isn't even in sight, so you stop for a moment and catch your breath. When you turn your head back to look in front of you, you see a boy walking up to you.

"Hello, sir! I'm glad you stopped running, I have something for you."

The boy hands you an envelope, gives you a polite nod, and runs off into an alley.

------

Keeper of Lore,

The waters of the open ocean are quite the contrast to the dry sands of the Osirian desert. Enjoy your time at sea, but serve the Ruby Prince during the voyage. First, find enclosed a special cabochon from the Ruby Prince himself, which he wishes to be given to Sephriel’s bodyguard, an elf named Thanzeril. He is a vocal proponent for the opening of Azlant’s ruined shores to the world. The Ruby Prince shares this view of our own desert ruins. Ensure Thanzeril knows he isn’t alone in his desire to see the secrets of the past open to modern man.

Additionally, I’d like you to retrieve the iconic pipe from the Throaty Mermaid’s figurehead. With all the ancient relics smuggled by Captain Veane and his crew, having a scrying focus to further monitor the vessel’s activities would be invaluable.

With dedication to knowledge,

Otoneraphim, Humble Scribe of the Ruby Prince

Seijiro:
While you run toward the Throaty Mermaid, you suddenly notice a young boy in an alley motioning for you to approach. You're well ahead of those behind you, and know you won't catch up to Murdoth and Talathel due to their head start. You walk up to the boy, who gives you an envelope. Before you can ask him anything, he leaves.

------

Servant of the Satrap,

Your upcoming assignment on a smugglers’ ship as notable as the Throaty Mermaid is quite a blessing for the mighty Kelesh Empire’s coffers. There are several contacts I wish you to make during your voyage to the Mordant Spire.

First, find a man named Killik, the ship’s medic. He once served aboard a very successful slaving vessel out of the Katapeshi port of Okeno and may have information to offer regarding smuggling in and out of this important city. See what you can glean from him and report it back to me. It has come to my attention that there is an exotic animal smuggler on board as well, taking a pair of rust monsters to Riddleport. See if he might be open to working with us to bring magical beasts in and out of Katheer and establish a line of communication in the event we may use his services in the future.

In the spirit of profit,

Pasha Muhlia Al-Jakri

Talathel:
You're the first to arrive at the Throaty Mermaid, but decide to wait for the others before you board it. While you're waiting a man approaches you and hands you an envelope. He walks off without saying a word.

------

Esteemed Agent of the Empire,

I am glad it’s you who will be spending so much time at sea and not me. The salty air is bad for my complexion. Also, while you’re there, you’ll be able to help the Empire maintain our power and glory.

Among the Throaty Mermaid’s crew is a skilled assassin from the Woodbane Hunters guild. I want to hire this woman, named Anera, to eliminate a particularly annoying elven problem I’ve been having. Enclosed is a sealed letter to Anera; ensure that she gets it. If she accepts the assignment, she’ll sign and return the letter to you. In this case, get it to me as soon as you reach land.

I’ve also received a tip that the ship’s cook owns a rare tome on disguising poisons in everyday foods. If you can, bring me her copy of Concocted Libations to Die For. I’ve an upcoming dinner party where it may be useful.

For the Grand Prince,

Baron Jacquo Dalsine

#2-13: Murder on the Throaty Mermaid

While on a routine mission to escort a dignitary to the mysterious Mordant Spire aboard a disreputable smuggler's ship, the PCs find themselves embroiled in a murder mystery that could jeopardize the Pathfinder Society's relationship with the isolationist elves who call the citadel home. Can the cunning Pathfinders discover who among the ship's crew of scum and villains is responsible for the crime in time to clear their own names?

(This murder mystery upon the open sea features a mechanic allowing for a different killer each time it's run to ensure that no amount of word of mouth will spoil the investigation for any team of canny players.)

(You are sougth after people, but the medals are only given to people who've done a lot of good things for the city. So you may cause the guards to waver, if maybe just for a moment.)

Both Allyph and Majenko are still with you.

15 minutes have passed since the others left.

@Denario:
You eventually manage to convince your parents to leave Korvosa, but it's harder to convince Diana.

"Please... promise me to not do anything foolish, please?" she asks you, nearly shaking with anxiety.

@Mavor:
You notice tears have welled up in Blythe's eyes when you let go of her. "Mavor, I... Please come back to me... Will you?"

Theandra heads for the stairs. "I'll give the two of you a moment while I pack."

The old woman stops in her tracks and turns to look at you. "Don't you worry, Mavor. I will take care of her."

"And her tiny fur ball," she adds, then heads upstairs.

@Quorthos:
Magembe gives you a long, hard stare. After he moment he suddenly nods his head. "I see."

He starts packing some items, then grabs a dozen anti-plagues and gives them to you. "You can take these, no need to pay."

Magembe looks at you again, but his eyes are different this time. There's a strong hint of pride in them as he says, "To think the young boy I took in and raised would become such a brave man... Do what you must do, Quorthos. And no matter what happens, know that you truly make me proud to be your father."

The moment Miyako hits the floor her appearance shifts. Her skin changes to a crimson fur, a tail pops up from under her skirt, and her facial features become fox-like.

Once Bo's cast his spell on Miyako, she opens her eyes again and weakly sits up. She immediately notices her human disguise has worn off.

"Guess you now know," Miyako mutters, her features changing back to how you've come to know her.

For Lost Glory

You look out on the tundra of Hongal, the northernmost realm of the continent of Tian Xia. You will have to cross this tundra to reach the capital of Hongal, Ordu-Aganhei, from where caravans depart to follow the Path of Aganhei. By traveling this dangerous path through the Wall of Heaven and across the Crown of the World, you will be able to reach Avistan.

Behind you are the ruins of Maiji, an old stone settlement that’s been long abandoned by the semi-nomadic Tian-La people that have made Hongal their home. A relic of the time when these horse lords tried settling in permanent villages. It was here that you spent the night, using the walls of what was once a house as your shelter for the night. The fire you made to keep yourself warm is still smoldering.

You were told that the best way to reach Ordu-Aganhei isn’t to travel in a straight line toward the city. Food’s sparse on the tundra, and you’d have to be lucky enough to happen upon one of the Tian-La’s temporary settlements in order to survive. Instead, the advice you’ve been given is to travel northeast, to the town of Muliwan. There you can resupply before you head out to Ordu-Aganhei and start your trek to the other continent, Avistan.

Have fun! ;)
