Hey there,

So I'm about to try running this AP as an intro to PF2 for my kids (side note: wish me luck, I haven't GMed anything in like, 25 years!).

I know that this is supposed to be a more primitive part of the world, and that makes some items tough to justify, moreso for a small group like the Broken Tusks. Like, a steel sword isn't something you can get just any darn place (side note #2: it seems a bit mean to give the Tusks Sarenrae as a patron deity, neener-neener-no-scimitars-for-you-Cleric!). But I wanted some sort of mechanism in place to let the boys have a chance to hunt up the things they might need to make stuff like a composite bow, or a suit of hide armor, or what have you. I started getting an idea in my head, and I was hoping to run it by you fine folks, see if it's worth refining.

What I came to was the idea of, I guess a Downtime activity, whose name I haven't yet decided on. It would basically be like an Earn Income check, probably using Survival (or Hunting Lore if you've got it), and because money isn't really a thing that has a ton of use to the Kellids, you'd take your Income in an abstraction I'm currently calling "Scrounge." The players can then use their stash of "Scrounge GPs" to pay the costs associated with Crafting region-appropriate items.

Is something like this feasible? Is it worth doing? Is there even time in the AP to allow for this? (Like, if there's not time to allow for this AND Crafting, maybe allow these checks to be made incidentally alongside other stuff?) Has someone already come up with a better way and I'm needlessly trying to reinvent the wheel? Am I even making a lick of sense?

Look, if you made it this far, I appreciate your time and patience. Thanks, and if you've got any constructive criticism, I'm all ears.

Have a great day.

Sincerely,
Redblade

Hey there,

So I know (or think I know) that I read some piece of game lore in a 2nd edition book about the orcs of Belkzen basically telling the Whispering Way that they could shove all the way off. But I'll be damned if I can find it now. I thought it was in one of the books I own (2e CRB, the APG, and the Ancestry Guide), but I can't find the passage now. Can anyone direct me toward the text in question? Or if I'm just hallucinating, let me know that? ;)

Thanks!

Hi there,

So I've always kind of known the Atom feed buttons in the right of most threads were there, does anyone know how to actually use them? Like, I'd want to use some manner of App to get that info and push notifications to my phone, keep me from just F5-every-ten-seconds-ing my way through the day.

Surely this is a thing, right?
And one of you know how to do it?
And would help a guy out? :)

Thanks and have a great day.

Hey,

Really quick. Do you think it'd be reasonable to allow Air or Water Elemental Sorcs to let their bloodline schticks do lightning or cold damage instead of bludgeoning like the rules say?

Just curious.

Hey,

So I'm not quite clear on the benefit of having one's armor made from adamantine. Shields, I get it, because their Hardness and HP get put to the test constantly. But I don't really see an upside to making your armor tougher like that (even though you might think there should be some benefit). Does 2e have sundering rules that slipped past my attention (not out of the question)?

So, this thing is basically a basket hilt with a blade on either end, if I've read it right. Where, and more to the point, how would one carry this in a non-combat situation? I'm having a tough time seeing a place/way to carry this where it won't cause serious problems as measured in "Ow I accidentally stabbed myself"-isms.

Hey,

So my character's backstory has always involved him being taken out of Belkzen as a child and becoming a slave/bodyguard in the Sarini family. For the bulk of that time, in his head, he kind of just went with it, and didn't think, didn't question anything. The spark that finally woke Dom up was hearing a performance by Shensen. This "opened my eyes" and made me question the life I was living.

If any of you have ever put any thought into the names of prior works/roles/songs Shensen has performed, do you think you could be persuaded to share your work with the class? Otherwise my next step is to try and file the serial numbers off some RL stuff. :D

Hey,

So quick question. If an attack does two damage types, and the target has resistance to both, are resistances applied separately?

So like, a dragon instinct barbarian who's raging with a sword does slashing and fire. He hits a skeleton, that resists both types of damage. The two damage types are resolved independent of each other, right?

Thanks,
Ghorrin Redblade

Hey there,

So I'm trying to decide if it's just "not ideal" or "terrible idea" to use an agile weapon that isn't finesse. It looks like Swashbucklers always keep Dex as their Key Ability score, so are you hamstringing yourself by using a weapon that isn't finesse? My dream of a half-orc swash carving guys up with knuckle daggers is riding on this. :)

Hey there,

Since everyone was such a big help in organizing my thoughts on my previous build idea (the necksplitter guy), I figured I'd ask about another idea that exists in my head in just ten words or less. In this case, it's "Monk with a temple sword."

So the first thing I know (or think I know, anyway) is that maneuvers are a little more viable than they were in 1e. So the sword's trip property might actually mean I want to, you know, use it to trip people. Apart from that, did anyone in the playtest (or over the past three weeks (wow, it's already been three weeks!)) do anything particularly cool with a temple sword-armed monk?

Thanks for indulging my curiosity.

Later on,
Ghorrin Redblade

Hey,

As may have been evident from the subject line, I've got the idea to make a half-orc character (assume fighter, I guess) that uses the necksplitter as his weapon of choice (this isn't for a specific game, I'm just noodling around with ideas in my head). Looking at the weapon, it's got the Forceful and Sweep traits. Anyone yet devoted any thought to how one might leverage that to best effect?

Hey,

So my kids got me this calendar last Christmas where each page is some cool/weird place or thing somewhere in the world. One of the entries last week was about an old signal tower for the Optical telegraph, which was designed by a French fellow named Chappe around the time of the Revolution.

My question is, do you see anyplace in Golarion having a use for something like that? Where/how?

Thanks for your time.

Hey there,

So I've been reading over the rules for the Unchained Action Economy, seeing as how it's clearly the basis for 2e (and I don't know, maybe Starfinder uses it too, but I haven't gotten SF yet).

Are you constrained by your BAB on how many attacks you can make? Like, in "normal" rules, a level 3 fighter gets one attack at +3 (plus everything-yadda-yadda). In the UAE, if I'm not using actions for other stuff, can I go +3/-2/-7? I mean, in most cases it seems like it'll be a waste of time, but one might get lucky, no?

Thanks for your time.

Hello,

Some friends have talked me into trying PFS play, and I've got it in my head to try a Kinetic Knight. The concept sounds good, but I don't know what to do with it. Any advice on how to build one? I'm thinking Fire for his primary, then branch into aether.

Thanks.

Hey,

Let's say your character had a strong interest in growing mint, and wanted to do it indoors to prevent prying eyes from seeing anything. Do you think a continual flame spell could work as a magical "grow lamp"?

Hi there,

I'm working up a character concept that could end up as either one of the two classes in my subject line. Right now I'm leaning toward the Cavalier. Here's the main points of difference I'm seeing.

Skills: DC gets more per level, and gets a few nice choices (I'm thinking Order of the Dragon, so Perception and Survival, the latter of which I like for concept reasons). VB loses spells, but keeps Spellcraft? Gee, thanks.

Saves: VB wins here handily. Gets good Will, and Divine Grace, it's not even close.

Class features: pretty even, I think. The one thing VB seems to have in its favor is getting the OP&R deed, which the DC doesn't.

Anyone else see anything that moves the needle one way or the other?

Thanks for your time.

Things I've Always Kind of Assumed But Now I'll Just Ask, Volume 8...

Warpriests can't take Domains, right? I've always assumed they have to take Blessings, but it can't hurt to confirm that.

Thanks!

Hi,

I've never played this AP, but I've got a character idea that lends itself very well to a fire kineticist. Without spoilers, can someone just tell me if that's a good/bad/really-neither-way choice for an element for this AP? Like, are all the robots fireproof or something? :)

Thanks,
Ghorrin Redblade

Hey,

I'm intrigued by these two additions to the elven arsenal. How would one make best use of those weapons on an elf with a focus on face-stabbing? Could one go fighter, focus hard on Dex/Int, and use the Elven Battle Style feats to good effect?

Thanks.

Ghorrin Redblade (Leafblade? Redleaf?)

Hey,

So I was trying to think, are there any archetypes available to PF Barbarians that would indicate someone whose class features are somehow a sort of divinely-inspired rage? The new Zealot Barabarian in 5th edition is kind of what got me thinking about this.

I can't think of any archetypes that explicitly entail something like this, but to be honest, I'm not sure it even needs to be done via archetype. Just fluff the source of one's rage as a sort of religius ecstasy, and a lot of the class features can just work as they do for a base barbarian. Maybe flavor him with Celestial Totem (or Blood); if there's anything else, I'll be darned if I can think of it.

Thanks for humoring my thinking-out-loud.

Ghorrin Redblade

Hey,

Just wondering, has anyone played a Kinetic Knight Kineticist using all cold/ice-themed abilities? This time of year always makes me think of an old character of miine from City of Heroes, who I think would be recreated rather well by that archetype.

Hi,

So I'm putting together a Bloodrager submission for this AP, and I'm torn between Aquatic or Naga bloodline. Is one particularly better or worse for this AP, or can I just flip a coin.

Thanks.

Hey,

So recently, I was very briefly in a Mummy's Mask game that ended up folding (GM's time commitments imploded; these things happen). Over the course of it, I was browsing some of the Osirian pantheon, and I came across Sekhmet. Naturally, a dramatic-looking deity like her caught my attention, and the seeds started getting planted in my head for a character who was devoted to her. I was trying to think of a few ways to build out the concept.

Mooncursed barbarian, Bloodrager (Shapechanger bloodline). Both of these seem very straightforward. Change into lion-like form, maul foes into bits. Mic drop. Done. (Strictly RAW, a Mooncursed has to pick a tiger instead of a lion, but I think functionally, it comes out the same.)
Non-Mooncursed barb, going natural attacks with Beast Totem + Animal Fury. Same idea, just implemented differently.
Warpriest or Inquisitor, battleaxe+shield. A little more weapon-oriented than the ideas mentioned above. If I went warpriest, I think the Destruction and Healing blessings would be an interesting combo.
Kinetic Knight: Sekhmet has that Fire domain, so maybe something like this could work out. I haven't tried building out a Kinetic Knight before, but that doesn't mean I couldn't.
Hunter: Maybe you could outsource the mauling to a lion animal companion. I don't know if I'd make the Hunter as melee or Archery, but either could probably work.

Anyone else got any bright ideas that flow along similar lines? I'd still have to figure out what a modern-day character was doing worshiping such an old-school god, but I'm sure I could come up with something. :)

Thanks for your time, have a great day!

Hi folks,

So I've got a Mutagenic Mauler that I'm playing in a RotRL campaign. The basic idea behind him is "Grapple when something calls for it (i.e. casters), Outslug Style when it doesn't". The feats I'm planning on are as follows:

1: Imp Grapple
2: Weapon Focus (Unarmed)
3: Outslug Style
5: (pick), Lunge
7: Greater Grapple
8: Outslug Weave
9: (pick)
11: Rapid Grappler, (pick)

The empty choices at 5, 9, and 11 are what I'm trying to figure out. The things I was considering for those slots are Outslug Sprint (finish the feat chain), Chokehold, Pinning KO, Throat Slicer (more grapple tricks). Anyone got ideas for stuff I might have missed?

Thanks!

Hi,

I've got a half-orc Mutagenic Mauler I'm playing in a RotRL game. He's built to mix punching guys using Outslug Style with some grappling. If I pick up the human FCB (+1 CMD to two maneuvers of my choice), I figure one of the two I pick should be grapple every time (turn oneself into a black hole for escape checks), but I'm undecided on the other. Are there any combat maneuvers used by foes in the AP that I'll really want to avoid?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Ghorrin Redblade

Hey,

So I've got a Steel Hound Investigator I just started in a MM game. The way I figure it, his first two Talent choices will be to pick up Rapid Reload as a bonus feat at 3, and 5 will be Quick Study. After that, I was thinking Alchemist's Infusion discovery at 7. At 9 I was thinking one of the Talents that add more free uses to Inspiration, be it Expanded Inspiration (hellooooooo, Perception!), Underworld Inspiration (DD, as I've heard this AP is traptastic), or Device Talent (UMD). Anyone got any advice on which of those puts more on the figurative table?

Thanks,
Ghorrin Redblade

Does it count as "Water" when you're aboard a ship?

Just checking. :)

Hi,

So if one uses Unhindering Shield with a two-handed weapon and a buckler, you get to fight two-handed and still get the buckler's defense, okay. Does the feat also take away the -1 to attack rolls for THF-ing with the buckler on your arm? If that's been answered, I missed it.

Thanks.

Ghorrin Redblade

Hey there,

Every time I look at the Bloodrager class, I feel like there are a few really cool bloodlines for sorcs that are just begging to become bloodrager bloodlines. I was really hoping for a few in either Arcane Anthology or MTT, but alas, nothing. You think we'll ever see any of these?

  • Aquatic
  • Boreal
  • Nanite
  • Oni
  • Serpentine
  • Starsoul

Just wishin' out loud. Have a good weekend!

Discipline Focus wrote:
You gain a +2 bonus to saving throw DCs when using maneuvers of the selected discipline. You also inflict an additional +2 points of damage when wielding associated weapons of the chosen discipline.

Let's say I take this feat for Solar Wind, then pick up the SW style feat chain. Strictly RAW, Discipline Focus won't help with the DC of Solar Wind Flash, will it? Assuming that answer is no, should it apply? No, it's not a Solar Wind maneuver, but it's definitely Solar, and Windy, y'know?

Just thinking out loud, thanks for your time.

Hi all,

So this profile is for a half-orc Vigilante (Avenger) I’ve got in a Hell’s Rebels game. To date I hadn’t done a ton of planning around this guy’s build, but I think I’d better get to it. One character creation item of note is that I’ve got “free” VMC (i.e. didn’t cost me feats), which I took in fighter.

My teammates are an investigator, a cleric, an aerokineticist, and a bard. I’ve found myself as the “eye of the storm” in melee, two-handing the falcata to pretty good effect. The idea in my head has been to make him sort of a “Stealth Fighter,” sneaking onto the scene and raising hell once it’s go time. (My wife and I are in the middle of watching Person of Interest, and it’s become damn near impossible to not think of Dom as “The Man In The Breastplate”.)

Some choices I’ve been eyeing up:

Social Talents: Renown, Many Guises
Vigilante Talents: Armor Skin, Rooftop Infiltrator, Signature Weapon (falcata)
Feats: (shrug) dunno. One thing I was planning on was using the Advanced Armor/Weapon Training options to give myself a boost to my skills. (Normally when I think AWT I immediately go to “Armed Bravery”, but as a Vigilante I already have a good Will save, so I think I’m covered there.)

Anyway, any feedback anyone wants to give would be awesome. Have a great one!

I've got a Slayer in a Hell's Rebels campaign (just hit level 2), and my GM has offered to let me rebuild as a Vigilante. I was figuring on an Avenger, being predominantly Str-based and two-handing a falcata as his weapon of choice. This can work, right? I haven't yet had a chance to dig into HeroLab and scope it out, but I don't see why it couldn't.

As an additional point, my character has "free" VMC that was a randomly rolled boon at character creation. In his Slayer incarnation, this was used for VMC magus. Think there's a better use for it? Make a pitch, I'm all ears!

Thanks.

Hi there,

So I’m putting together a character for a ROTRL game I was invited to. I decided it’s going to be a Warpriest of Desna, using the starknife as his weapon. We were invited to roll for stats, and the dice caught fire for me, to the tune of 18/17/15/15/11/10 (RNJesus was smiling on me that night).

I’m not quite sure how I want to go about building this guy. I was thinking I’d like him to focus on melee first, and maybe invest just enough feats into throwing that letting go of the starknife isn’t a terrible idea (so pick up the new Ricochet Toss feat, plus 1-2 more). Anyone made something like this work? I’d love any feedback people can give.

Hey,

Just wondering. Besides Irori, what other gods have notable monastic traditions that lend themselves to a LG character? Does a monk of Erastil make much sense?

Thanks.

Hello there,

On the Campaigns tab of my profile, one of the ones that pops up is an inactive campaign for which the DM just disappeared like Kaiser Soze. Is there anything I can do to hide that campaign?

Thanks.

Hello,

The link between this alias and the campaign in which he's playing seems to have been at least partially broken. The campaign shows him as a character, but not vice versa, i.e. the character doesn't show the campaign as one of his actives. Any way to fix that?

Thanks.

Hi there,

Shattered Defenses wrote:

Any shaken, frightened, or panicked opponent hit by you this round is flat-footed to your attacks until the end of your next turn. This includes any additional attacks you make this round.

So, let's say I've got three attacks a turn, and a way of getting a free-action Intimidate check (rake rogue, Cornugon Smash, etc.). Let's say Attack 1 inflicts shaken. Does SD kick in at that point, letting Attacks 2 & 3 be against the flat-footed target? Or does it have to be, Attack 1 causes shaken, Attack 2 Shatters Defenses, and Attack 3 will be vs. FF (as well as all of next turn)?

Thanks,
Ghorrin Redblade

Hey,

So a while back I got to thinking about a Sunder-focused guy as a sort of debuffer. Just start whacking away at opponent's armor to make it easier for allies to hit. The problem came from the fact that you had to be able to inflict broken on the guy's armor in one shot, or it does nothing and isn't worth the action cost.

Enter Smashing Dent...

(brief pause for obligatory hug of my copy of Weapon Master's Handbook...)

...and the ability to mess a dude's armor up on any successful sunder. Starting to think the idea has some legs after all. Anyone tried this yet?

Hey,

A quick question. Say I've got a magic crossbow with which I'm using Empty Quiver Style. Does its enhancement bonus aply to the melee attacks one makes using EQS?

Hey,

So I've got a character idea in my head, that I figure someone has probably worked with some. The basic idea is, in ten-words-or-less, "Apostate of Rull." A half-orc Eldritch Guardian, using Improved Familiar to have a lightning elemental familiar, and have him flit around the battle, sparking guys as opportunity permits.

Anyone worked on something similar? If so, I'd love to hear some feedback.

Hey, a quick, very general question:

For the various reach weapons, if one assumes all other factors are equal, which do you value more, brace or trip? This is for a warpriest I'm making. I know the utility of trip tails off later on, but brace requires a readied action to be of any use, and aren't my standard actions likely to end up used on spells more often than not?

TIA for your feedback.

Ghorrin Redblade

Hey,

So last week I saw something on cable about some terrifyingly large prehistoric snake (45-ish feet long). The next morning I started thinking about having a giant snake crush the bejeezus out of a fire giant, and that was good for a chuckle.

Has anyone given the ACG hunter class a whirl using a constrictor snake as their AC? Any special build considerations you had to make? If so, I'd love to hear how it worked.

Hey,

Does the half-orc favored class bonus for brawler improve the damage they do with Close Weapon Mastery as well, or just your actual unarmed-really-unarmed damage (my gut is saying the latter, but I'd be happy to be wrong on this :) )?

Thanks,
Ghorrin

Hi there,

So I've got a brand-new level 1 bloodrager I'm about to start playing, he still has the "new character smell" on him. :) I picked a green dragon bloodline for him, mainly just for kicks/flavor reasons. I'm trying to figure out what I actually want to *do* with him, and figured I'd solicit a little help.

I think my long-range plan is to make him a natural attacker, using either a 2 or 4-level run in Dragon Disciple to pick up a bite attack, then after I have the bite, use the Noxious Bite feat to mess dudes up. I figured a 2-handed weapon (reach or standard, undecided yet) would be a good supplement. Does this sound feasible? Anyone tried this during the playtest?

Also, anyone getting any good vibes from the new feats & spells from the ACG, or old feats that seem especially useful? I think at least one shot of Extra Rage seems just about mandatory, and Arcane Strike could be pretty useful.

Thanks for your time.

Ghorrin Redblade

Hi,

For whatever reason, the ifrits are the race rattling around my brain at the moment. Anyone ever played one that leverages their racial feats/abilities to good effect in melee? With the new slayer class, I've got an idea starting to form around a guy who drops smokesticks (or alternatively, sets the building on fire), and engages is target without problems thanks to Firesight.

Anyone ever made something like this work? I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks,
Ghorrin Redblade

Good afternoon,

I've got a character idea starting to coalesce in my mind, and I figured I'd see if anyone had ever done a similar one, the better to pick your brains for advice. :)

It's an archon-blooded aasimar monk, and I was thinking that Snake Style looked interesting (yes, I'm aware it only works on 1 attack/rd). I don't think I'm interested in a MOMS; just the Snake Style.

The only archetype that really caught my eye was Weapon Adept, and it brought this question to mind: do reasonable DMs allow Perfect Strike to be used with any weapon that has the monk quality, or are you really limited to all the goofy baseline weapons?

Unrelated thought: is it feasible to use a longspear to fish for AOOs, then use Five-Fisted Fingers of Kung Fu Death on any targets inside the spear's reach?

I'll put something together in HL tonight when I'm in front of my home PC, but for now I'm just trying to suss out the big-picture sense of things.

Thanks for your time.

Hey,

Indulge a little hypothetical speculation on my lunch break....

Say I'm on an infiltration mission. I've snuck away from the Ball, and en route to my objective, came across some palace guards that had to be "taken care of.". Hey,

So I've got a level 7 cleric I'm prepping for an adventure. I've earmarked about 2.5k gold to cover some scrolls of things that either aren't worth having around as prepped spells, or are worth having as many of as you can get a hold of. Anyone care to help me figure out some candidate spells?

Thanks,

Hey,

I got to wondering if there is a druid archetype that is less about plants & animals, and more about elementals. You know, maybe gets an elemental instead of an AC, can summon elementals better, wild shape works better for elementals than flora & fauna, that sort of thing. Is this a thing in Pathfinder? I couldn't find anything, but I don't trust my search-fu.
